Lured by online betting, BTech student stages his own abduction in Cuttack
CUTTACK: In a bid to extract money from his parents to invest in online betting, a 22-year-old BTech student allegedly faked his own abduction and tried to get Rs 50,000 from them. The youth, Shubham Samal, was caught hold by police after a two-day intensive search, on Monday.
Police said Samal, a resident of Gadasantri within Banarpal police limits in Angul, is pursuing BTech at Silicon Institute of Technology in Bhubaneswar.
The cops had began an investigation from Saturday after receiving a complaint from Shubham's elder sister Rupali.
As per Rupali, Shubham had come to her residence at OSAP 6th Battalion campus in OMP Square in Cuttack a few days back. She stated that Shubham had called their father up on June 20 alleging he had been kidnapped by three unknown persons from OMP Square and they were demanding Rs 50,000 for his release. Subsequently, his father had also sent the said amount to Shubham via UPI.
In the meantime, police had formed a special team and managed to trace Shubham after a two-day search from Madhupatana near Press Chhak area. During interrogation, Shubham confessed to have scripted his own kidnapping to get some money for investing in an online betting application.
'Shubham had left his sister's place on June 20 and went to Press Chhak from where he called his father up alleging he had been kidnapped. He was involved in online betting and wanted to invest more money in the app. Hence, he faked his own abduction,' said a senior police officer adding, Shubham was eventually handed over to his family after being issued a warning not to indulge in such acts in the future.

Odisha: Two Dalit men allegedly assaulted, tonsured after being accused of cow smuggling
Two Dalit men in Odisha's Ganjam district were allegedly assaulted and tonsured on Sunday by a group that accused them of cow smuggling, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. Six persons were detained in connection with the case on Monday, Ganjam Superintendent of Police Suvendu Kumar Patra told PTI. The men, Babula Nayak (54) and Bulu Nayak (42), were transporting two cows and a calf in an auto when they were accosted by a group of 'cow-protectors' in Kharigumma village, the news agency quoted an unidentified police official as saying. The group allegedly accused the men of smuggling cattle and demanded Rs 30,000 from them. When they refused, they were assaulted, forced to crawl, consume grass and drain water, the official added. The group also took the mobile phones of the two men and Rs 700 cash, The Indian Express reported. The police have filed a case based on a complaint by the men who were assaulted, Chandrika Swain, inspector at the Dharakote police station in Ganjam, told The Indian Express.

Online scam: Man loses Rs 24K after ordering Jeera, Pulses; FIR filed
Image credits: iStock UDUPI: A resident of Belapu village in Kaup taluk fell victim to an online scam while trying to purchase household ingredients through a contact found on IndiaMART. In a complaint, Narayana , 53, stated that he planned to buy jeera, Bengal gram, and urad dal for preparing home products. On June 11, his son, Shivadas Rao, searched on Google and found a contact number via the IndiaMART app. He called the number, and a man identifying himself as Shivam Sengar, claiming to be from Sojitra Enterprises, answered the call and convinced them of the legitimacy of the business. Believing him, the complainant placed an order worth Rs 24,000 for 120 kg of jeera, 30 kg of Bengal gram, and 30 kg of urad dal. On the same day, Narayana transferred an advance of Rs 11,000 through Google Pay. On June 12, the accused contacted the complainant's son again and asked for the remaining amount, sending an invoice via WhatsApp. Following this, two more payments of Rs 10,000 and Rs 3,000 were made. However, the accused allegedly failed to deliver the goods and has since switched off his phone. The complainant realised he was cheated. A case was registered at Shirva Police Station under Sections 316(2) and 318(2) of the BNS and Section 66(D) of the IT Act.

Chhattisgarh road accidents surge in 2024: Court flags black spots, coal traffic, and poor road safety
Representative Image RAIPUR: Road accidents in Chhattisgarh have seen a significant rise in 2024, with a 10.28% increase in incidents compared to the previous year. The number of fatalities rose by 9.50%, and injuries by 7.25%, according to data presented to the High Court by Court Commissioner Ravindra Sharma. In 2023, the state recorded 13,468 road accidents, which climbed to 14,853 in 2024. Fatalities increased from 6,166 in 2023 to 6,752 in 2024, and the number of injured persons rose from 11,723 to 12,573 during the same period. The Court Commissioner highlighted that "black spots" – accident-prone areas – identified in Raipur, Durg, Janjgir, Sakti, and Mungeli districts have not been rectified. He further noted a substantial increase in accidents in Korba and Surguja districts, by 25.44 per cent and 42.25 per cent respectively. Additional Advocate General Shashank Thakur, representing the State, attributed the increase in Korba and Surguja to the high volume of dumpers carrying coal in these coal-bearing areas. Sharma also drew the court's attention to the illegal practice of transporting passengers in goods vehicles, inadequate street lighting within municipal limits, and accidents caused by stray animals on roads. The NHAI has also secured approval to initiate the bidding process for five new foot overbridges (FoBs) on the Bilaspur-Pathrapali section, at an estimated cost of Rs 17.95 crore. These FoBs are planned for Turkadih, Sendri, Madanpur, Melnadih & Karra villages, and Beltara town, all identified as high pedestrian traffic and accident-prone areas. Dhiraj Kumar Wankhede, counsel for NHAI, pointed out that dust from coal and fly ash transportation by trucks, particularly on the Korba-Raipur and Surajpur-Ambikapur roads, also contributes to accidents. He suggested that fly ash should be transported in capsules instead of open containers. The court has directed the impleadment of NTPC, Seepat, and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Bilaspur, as party respondents. The competent authorities of both companies have been instructed to file affidavits explaining the lack of precautions in coal and fly ash transportation. The Secretary, Department of Road Transport, will also file an affidavit outlining measures taken to curb unsafe transportation practices by NTPC and SECL.
