Thousands pack Manchester city centre as St Patrick's day parade returns after four-year absence

Thousands of people lined the streets this afternoon to welcome the St Patrick's Day parade back into the city centre after a four year hiatus. The city was a sea of green, white and orange as members of the Irish community came out to commemorate the national holiday of Ireland's patron saint.
This year was the 35th anniversary of the parade in the city and featured over 30 floats made up of charities, sports groups, businesses, Irish pipe and drum bands and even farm animals like goats, horses and ponies walked along the procession.
The two mile long parade began at the Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill at midday, before making its way down Cheetham Hill Road where some members of the public had gathered to be among the first to witness the event.

After passing the AO Arena, the procession made it's way into town which was drastically busier with thousands waiting awaiting its arrival on a packed Deansgate.
A finishing podium was set up on the junction of King Street where speeches were heard from local councillors, dignitaries and Manchester United announcer Alan Keegan, who entertained the crowd as the floats completed the final stretch of the crawl.
Previously, the parade had only gone as far as the Irish World Heritage Centre to the end of Cheetham Hill Road but this year it made its way onto Deansgate where it was met by hordes of excited spectators.
This year, St Patrick's Day falls on Monday, March 17, with lots of events going on across Greater Manchester to celebrate the occasion. Last week, the 11-day Irish Festival kicked off proceedings over at St Ann's Square, and this weekend the parade will take over the city streets.
One of the organisers of the event was local councillor, Pat Karney, speaking after the celebrations, he told the M.E.N: "It was a brilliant day. After a gap of four years we were a bit nervous about coming back into the centre, but it was a spectacular return.
"We estimate that over 30,000 people have come out to watch the parade. A stunning success for its return and it will only get bigger and better over the future years.
"We hope to come into Albert Square next year as well, so it's gonna establish itself as one of Manchester's major events."

Manchester United unveil new home kit with Old Trafford inspiration

Fresh start: Manchester United will be hoping a new kit brings better results next season (Adidas / Manchester United) Manchester United have unveiled their new home kit for the 2025/26 season. The club will be keen to put a miserable campaign behind them, having finished 15th in the Premier League table and lost in the Europa League final to Tottenham. Advertisement It means there will be no European football for United next season, further adding to the difficulty of rebuilding Ruben Amorim's squad. United have, though, already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha and he will be seen in the new kit come pre-season. Adidas have opted for a 'classic design' but with an 'abstract sleeve graphic' inspired by the club's Old Trafford stadium. Different shades of red on the sleeve are said to showcase elements of the pitch, stands and tunnel. Advertisement Juergen Rank, Senior Design Director at Adidas said: 'The colour red is fundamental to the club's DNA. 'There have been many different expressions of it over the years and for this season we wanted to do something a little different, using the sleeves as a canvas. 'The abstract graphic stays true to the club's DNA while providing an innovative look at feel to an otherwise classy and classic jersey.' The fan replica of the kit is available to buy for £85, with the on-field version costing £120.

These are the most popular Irish baby names for boys and girls

Naming your baby is a big deal. Seriously. Once you've locked the title in, there's no going back. Unless you're Kylie Jenner, that is. Which means new parents or parents-to-be often spend ages going back and forth on potential ideas, trying to agree on the perfect name for the newest addition to their family. These days, picking a name isn't as simple as it was when your mum, gran, or great-gran were naming their kids, either. There's less pressure to pass down titles to keep them in the family, and more of a focus on creativity. From seasonal to traditional to vintage to geographical, it's also popular to give a nod to your heritage, too. With that being said, if you're looking for the perfect Irish baby name, we've got you. Whether popular in Ireland or traditionally Irish, we scoured the data provided by the Central Statistics Office to see which names, for both boys and girls, are big hitters right now. The list of most popular baby names in Ireland is currently a mix of names with English origins, Irish origins, and Latin origins, so we've also sought out some well-known and more unique Irish names for you to browse for inspiration too. Good luck! Some Irish names can be a challenge for people to pronounce if they're unfamiliar with Gaelic (and, as we all know, there's nothing worse than having somebody butcher your, or your child's, name). So, with that in mind, we asked our good pal Brooke Scullion, a bona fide Derry girl, to lend a hand with how to correctly say some traditional Irish names (which are also listed below). Sophie Williams is a Freelance Journalist and Copywriter, covering everything from Fashion to Entertainment to music, Lifestyle and Features. She has interviewed a range of musical artists and authors including Alyssa Edwards, Courtney Barnett, Confidence Man, The Vaccines, Loyle Carner, Gabrielle, and John Niven, and has written for publications like Metro, Reader's Digest, ITV's Woo! and Vice's NBGA. She is also working on a book for HarperCollins about Taylor Swift, due to be published in 2024.
