Police described the incident as 'under control' and said it does not 'pose a risk to people inside the sports venue'. Thursday's game was paused for over two minutes due to the situation.
Videos posted on social media appeared to show a vehicle driving into a crowd of supporters as tempers flared outside the stadium.
The game was briefly paused in the eighth minute following the incident. Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia spoke to referee Cesar Soto Grado, who then spoke to a number of players from both sides. Soto Grado then talked to the pitch side police officers and members of both teams' dugouts, before signalling that play would restart in the 10th minute.
A number of supporters behind the goal defended by Garcia evacuated the stadium, and more fans situated in Grada Canito — where Espanyol's ultras sit — left their seats as the first half progressed.
Garcia was asked on several occasions by supporters not to put the ball back into play while the public address system announced that there had been no serious injuries as a result of the incident.
The fixture represented Barcelona's first chance to secure the 2024-25 La Liga title, which would be confirmed with victory against their Catalan rivals Espanyol.

Sevilla to miss out on first-choice managerial target
La Liga outfit Sevilla look set to miss out on a deal for their priority managerial target. That's according to market insider Matteo Moretto, who has confirmed that Imanol will not be the man to take his place on the bench at The Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán next season. Advertisement The name of tactician Imanol had taken its place centre stage in the media headlines surrounding Sevilla over recent days. This came after widespread reports surfaced, assuring that the 53-year-old was close to agreeing on the terms of a contract with the Nervionenses. Imanol is currently available for work, after bringing a surprise close to his Real Sociedad stint upon the close of the 2024/25 campaign. Safe to say, then, that it will come as a blow for those of a Sevilla persuasion to learn that, in fact, the Spanish tactician looks set to take his talents elsewhere. As per a report from the aforementioned Matteo Moretto: Advertisement 'Imanol Alguacil will not be Sevilla's next coach.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Officers shoot chainsaw-wielding man in Twin Cities, police say
Police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, say officers shot a man wielding a chainsaw overnight Thursday amid a domestic disturbance call. It happened on the 3200 block of 63rd Avenue North, according to police, after officers were called to the scene on a report of someone inside a residence "armed with knives." Police say crisis negotiators were called in to assist before officers told the suspect he was going to be arrested. Police say the man then walked out of the home with a chainsaw. "While trying to arrest and control the male, officers used pepper balls, 40 mm less lethal, and ultimately Brooklyn Center Police Officers discharged their firearms striking the male," police said in a statement released early Thursday morning. Police say the man was taken to an area hospital and is in stable condition. The officers involved are now on critical incident leave as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates. Police also say "multiple area police agencies" assisted them at the scene. This story will be updated.

Barcelona defender set for surgery after injury on international duty
Barcelona have been relatively injury-free over the course of the season, but saw two of their players go down on international duty at the under-21 Euros on the opening day of competition. One of them is set for surgery. Spain were up against the hosts Slovakia on Wednesday, and after going 2-0 up in the opening 20 minutes, were forced to find a late winner through Cesar Tarrega after Slovakia had mounted a second-half comeback. La Rojita will face Italy and Romania in their remaining group games. Gerard Martin set for surgery Barcelona have two players with Spain at the tournament, with Gerard Martin and Pablo Torre both starting. Both were performing well, but would not make it to the end of the match due to injury, with Martin coming off at half-time, and Torre taken off 13 minutes into the second half. Image via Sport. Advertisement Martin had suffered a hand injury, and Jijantes report that he has suffered a break. The 23-year-old has flown back to Barcelona to undergo surgery – it is not yet clear how long he will be out for. The fact that he has left the Spain camp for surgery suggests his tournament with the under-21 side could be over though. Meanwhile Torre came off with muscle discomfort, and so far there has been no update on his injury either. Doubts about future Martin enjoyed a decent debut campaign for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, and was set to be Alejandro Balde's alternative next year too. Yet following interest from the Premier League, with three teams looking at him, it has emerged that the Blaugrana would be willing to cash in on Martin. The asking price is reportedly €12m. As a result, Barcelona are now on the lookout for potential left-back opportunities on the transfer market, should an offer for Martin arrive. Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo has voiced a desire to return to the Blaugrana.
