Dan Burn: 'Never mind next season's Champions League matches - bring on Sunderland..'

Yahoo26-05-2025
WHO are Newcastle United most looking forward to playing against next season? Barcelona? Bayern Munich? Borussia Dortmund? Maybe a revenge mission against Paris St Germain?
The list of potential Champions League opponents is tantalising. After last weekend, though, Dan Burn admits he is most excited by the prospect of something much closer to home. Born and bred on the black-and-white side of the North-East, the Magpies defender cannot wait for the return of the derby day against Sunderland.
'I want to play against the best teams, so I'd love to play against Madrid, Barcelona,' said Burn, after Newcastle's return to the Champions League was confirmed despite a final-day defeat to Everton. 'That's why you want to play Champions League football. It'll be exciting.
'But it'll be good to even see Sunderland getting back to the Premier League. It's such a weird thing because I'm really excited about it.
'I shouldn't be, but those were the games when I was a kid. The derby days were the first fixtures I'd look for when they came out. So, I wouldn't say that I'm happy for them coming up, but I am happy that we get the derbies back.'
While Sunderland will be looking to re-establish themselves in the Premier League next season, Newcastle's goal will be to improve on a campaign that is surely the best in living memory.
Not only did the Magpies end a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy, they also qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons. As an added bonus, there were also historic wins at the Emirates and Old Trafford along the way.
READ MORE:Taking another step forward next season will not be easy, but there is a strong determination to make significant transfer investments this summer and Newcastle's squad should be stronger next term than it was this year.
Lifting silverware back in March was a historic achievement. The challenge facing the Magpies now is to become serial winners.
'I don't think we're far away from challenging at the top,' said Burn. 'The gaffer has mentioned that we've not strengthened in the last few seasons, so it'll probably be a big summer to add players and sort of keep it fresh.
'It's probably just going to be that change of mentality where we really get that belief that we should be up there.
'It'd be great to have a good Champions League run and I'm sure that he would love to win another cup. I feel like now that we've won that first cup, it's sort of broken the seal a bit and now we feel like we can really do that again.'
This has not just been a breakthrough season domestically for Burn, it has also seen the Blyth-born defender make his mark at international level.
Having made his England debut under Thomas Tuchel in March's World Cup qualifying win over Albania, Burn finds himself back in the squad for next month's qualifying game with Andorra and home friendly against Senegal.
This time next year, the expectation is that England will be preparing for the World Cup finals in North America, and while Burn was not even part of the conversation ahead of last summer's Euros in Germany, there is every chance he will be contending for a spot on the plane to the US, Mexico and Canada.
For a player that started in non-league with Blyth Town and Blyth Spartans, while working part-time at Asda, and also spent time with Darlington prior to turning professional, that would be quite some career transition.
'I said to get that first England call was a sort of dream come true,' said Burn. 'Now, I just want to keep trying to tick these camps off, so I'm really happy that I made it again I just want to try and get some more caps, more minutes and sort of take it from there.'

Who will win the 2025-26 Premier League title?

Yahoo Sports contributors Christian Polanco and guest host Stefano Fusaro make picks for the top finishers in 2025-26 Premier League and consider if Liverpool is set up to repeat as champions. View more Video Transcript Top topic presented by Buchanan's Blended Scotch Whiskey and official FIFA World Cup 26 supporter Nosamos Almund with a Bucanita on hand. All right, so please give us your top four in the Premier League this season. No shock. I'm gonna go with Liverpool to win again. Look, I understand that going back to back is extremely difficult, but when they've brought in the type of players that they have, I think it's to go after multiple. Titles this season. There are some challenges. I still think they're the best side top to bottom in the Premier League, so I'm going for Liverpool to win. Even though they lost the Community Shield. I mean, that's, I mean, it's not great, let me ask you a question. It's a stupid trophy anyway, right? I mean, and now if they would have won, I would have been like, oh, it's a glorious trophy. It's a very important one, but they lost, so we can say it's a stupid trophy. That was almost. Wake-up call in my opinion. Uh, to go real quick through the other top four. So I'm going to Liverpool to win. Chelsea second, Man City third, Arsenal fourth. Those are my top four. Chelsea, I think, is going to have a fantastic season. I think they will, they will be fighting, um, for the Premier League. I think they will be fighting, uh, by the end of the season, even maybe in the Champions League as well. I, I think it's has a very deep side. That has so many options, and I feel like they're ready to make the next step. Man City, they're gonna come back and have a great season. I don't think it's gonna be as bad as they were last year. They will win something this year. Not sure what they'll win, but I do think that Pep's not gonna let this go down the drain, down the toilet again, and I think that they have had enough signings that have come in to kind of replace some of the players that have that have out that have left the club, like Jack Grealish and some others as well. Uh, and I think Arsenal. You know, I think a lot of people are picking Arsenal to win the Premier League, and I'm just asking, um, have they done enough? Is Victor D Joker is the guy who's going to finally score 25 goals in a season for Arsenal? You know, the last guy who scored 25 goals in a season for Arsenal? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. That's how long. That it's been without a 25-goalscorer in a season. I don't know if Victor Join is going to be that guy. If he is, then I may be wrong about my prediction. But as of now, I still don't think that they've done enough to push them forward and be a better team than Liverpool or even Chelsea with how deep they are now. Close

How to watch Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley live: Stream, TV channel, team news, prediction

The Thomas Frank era officially begins on Saturday (10 am ET), when Tottenham Hotspur host newly promoted Burnley to kick of the 2025-26 Premier League season. WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou as Spurs manager this summer — just weeks after the Aussie delivered the club its first trophy since 2008 — and Tottenham Hotspur legend Heung-min Son decided it was time for him to move on as well, so say it's been a summer of change and transition would be a massive understatement. Cristian Romero has replaced Son as captain and everyone else is back from last season's Europa League-winning team, with the noted addition of Mohammed Kudus ($74 million, from West Ham) in Son's place. James Maddison (torn ACL) and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) are both missing in central midfield, where Frank's options are limited to ball-winners and all-action types. Spurs will be a dangerous counter-attacking and set-piece side this year, if their goals against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup are any indication, and that raises the floor for last season's 17th-place finishers but lowers their ceiling at the same time. Burnley have been plenty busy themselves this summer, preparing for life in the top tier once again. A dozen players have already been signed with transfer fees attached, and it's a baker's dozen if you include Axel Tuanzebe, who signed as a free agent from recently relegated Ipswich Town. Scott Parker's Clarets were promoted back to the Premier League (again) after finishing 2nd last season, their first back in the Championship (again). It marked the 4th straight season that Burnley have either been promoted or relegated, as they yo-yo back and forth, clearly too good for the second tier but also miles off the pace the last time they were in the top flight (24 points from 38 games, relegated by 8 points). Spurs 1-0 Burnley.
