Son ‘pushed' to B'desh, Malda migrant's dad moves habeas corpus petition

Kolkata: Malda resident Sk Amir's father Jiyem Sheikh moved a habeas corpus petition in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. Amir, 22, was allegedly pushed into Bangladesh by Rajasthan police on the night of July 22 on suspicion he was an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant.
Sheikh told TOI earlier that his eldest son, Amir, had gone to Chittor in Rajasthan with a bunch of others from the neighbourhood to work as a labourer. He had said that while those accompanying his son had their EPICs, PANs and Aadhaars, his son only had his Aadhaar on him.
According to the father, Amir tried to convince police officials that he was from Malda in Bengal, but the cops branded him 'Bangladeshi'. Later, a video emerged that purportedly showed Amir crying.
His father then received a call from the person who had shot the video informing him that Amir was at Ghumra in Bangladesh.

Rajya Sabha member Samirul Islam said on his X handle that Amir's family was taking legal recourse over alleged 'unlawful detention'. "Amir Sk, a resident of Kaliachak in Malda and son of Jiyem Sheikh, was unlawfully detained by the Rajasthan police, governed by the BJP, and deported to Bangladesh.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Opposition and accused them of opposing the Special Intensive Review (SIR) exercise in Bihar to save infiltrators, who he alleged are their vote bank. Addressing a public rally in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, Shah strongly advocated for the removal of infiltrators' names from the voter list ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, asserting that the Constitution of India does not grant voting rights to individuals not born in the country. "Before the Bihar assembly elections, should the names of infiltrators be removed from the voter list or not? The Constitution of India does not give the right to vote to those who are not born in India. Rahul Gandhi is roaming around carrying the Constitution; he should also open it and read it... They are opposing SIR because infiltrators are their vote bank," Shah said. Home Minister Shah said, "The NDA government will be formed in Bihar with a majority." Shah also criticized RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav for allegedly protecting illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who, he claimed, are taking jobs from the people of Bihar. Shah said that Rahul Gandhi should stop this vote bank politics on SIR and added that the exercise is a routine process and not a new development. Citing historical precedent, Shah noted that it was introduced by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and carried out during previous governments as well. "Who does Lalu Prasad Yadav want to save? ... Do you want to save those Bangladeshis who come from outside and snatch jobs of the people of Bihar? ... Rahul Gandhi should stop this vote bank politics and SIR is not happening for the first time. It was started by Jawaharlal Nehru and it happened in 2003 as well. They are finding reasons as they are going to lose the Bihar elections," Shah said. Shah also targeted RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and his family, accusing them of failing to bring development to Mithilanchal despite being in power for several years. He alleged that their tenure was instead marked by lawlessness and criminal activity. "I want to ask Tejashwi Yadav, his father and mother were in power for a long time. Apart from hooliganism, running gangs, kidnapping, demanding ransom, what have you done for the development of Mithilanchal?" Shah said. Election Commission of India is yet to announce the official schedule for the Bihar Assembly election; the polls are expected to take place in October or November 2025.

The Income Tax Bill, 2025 introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 13 to replace the Income Tax Act, 1961 has been officially withdrawn. The government will present a revised version on Monday, incorporating most recommendations made by the Select Committee chaired by BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda. Officials say the decision to withdraw the earlier draft aims to avoid confusion from multiple versions and to present a single, updated Bill with all changes consolidated for Parliament's consideration. Why the bill is being replaced Baijayant Panda said the move was necessary to simplify India's decades-old tax law, which has been amended over 4,000 times and now spans over five lakh words. 'The new bill simplifies that by nearly 50 per cent, making it far easier for ordinary taxpayers to read and understand,' he told IANS. Wow. Gov withdraws the new income tax bill. Prashant Kishor targets Bihar Health Minister on corruption charges
Patna: Jan Suraaj chief, Prashant Kishor, on Friday slammed the Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey over corruption charges, asserting that the minister is involved in the medical college scam. 'Pandey accepted a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from BJP's Bihar state president Dilip Jaiswal in exchange for helping Kishanganj's MGM Medical College secure the status of a deemed university,' charged Kishor while addressing a press conference in Patna. He claimed the money was used to buy a flat worth Rs 86 lakh in Delhi's Dwarka in 2020, in the name of Pandey's wife, Urmila Pandey, at the height of the COVID crisis. According to Kishor, the Rs 25 lakh was first transferred to Pandey's father, Awadhesh Pandey, from Jaiswal's account on August 6, 2019, via RTGS. The funds were then used in six transactions to purchase the property, with Jaiswal acting as a witness in the deal. Kishor also accused Pandey of failing to mention this 'loan' in his 2020 election affidavit. Shortly after the property purchase, Kishor noted, MGM Medical College was granted deemed university status, after two decades of affiliation with BN Mandal University. Kishor further levelled serious allegations regarding ambulance procurement in Bihar. He claimed that in 2022, 466 Type C ambulances were bought from Force Motors at Rs 19.58 lakh each, while in 2025, 250 more were purchased at Rs 27 lakh each - despite similar models being sold to Odisha and Uttar Pradesh at lower prices. Tata Motors' cheaper bid was allegedly rejected because an AC in the driver's cabin was 'unnecessary,' paving the way for Force Motors' higher-priced order. The Jan Suraaj chief argued that if bulk buying was involved, prices should have been lower, not higher. He held Pratyay Amrit, then Principal Secretary of the Health Department and soon to be Chief Secretary, accountable for approving the inflated deals. Kishor also alleged irregularities in the Ayushman Bharat health card scheme at MGM College, Kishanganj, pointing out that the scheme's state head was formerly the personal secretary to Mangal Pandey. 'These officials must remember - signatures on files have consequences. Not only politicians like Lalu Prasad Yadav were punished in the fodder scam; officials were also caught,' Kishor warned. Prashant Kishor strongly countered the BJP's charges, asserting that he has been running the 'Baat Bihar Ki' Facebook page since 2018 and there is nothing illegal about it. 'When I left JD-U in 2018, they tried to pressure me by putting forward a dummy person claiming that the 'Baat Bihar Ki' page wasn't mine. My job is to create slogans – we do it for leaders across the country. Why would I steal my own slogan? The case went to court and was dismissed; now it's in the High Court with judgment reserved,' Kishor said. He added that the page has over 25 lakh followers and its photos and videos reach five crore viewers. 'If we've done anything wrong, the government is yours – file a case and arrest us,' he challenged. Kishor also attacked the BJP, saying, 'Lalu Prasad Yadav was punished for allegations against him, but BJP leaders are quietly enjoying the benefits under the blanket. These are thugs and miscreants.' He promised to release the 'next instalment' of his exposé soon. Responding to the charges, BJP's Bihar spokesperson Prabhakar Mishra dismissed them as baseless. 'Kishor and his party, Jan Suraaj, have lost ground in Bihar. They were defeated badly in the bypolls of Tarari, Ramgarh, Belaganj, and Imamganj, and they will lose again in the upcoming Assembly elections,' Mishra said. At the press meet, Jan Suraaj national president Uday Singh, former MP Sitaram Yadav, MLC Afaq Alam, HQ convenor NK Mandal, general secretary Sarwar Ali, ex-BJP leader Sudhir Sharma, and Vinita Vijay were present. The event was conducted by former MLA Kishore Kumar Munna, convenor of the election campaign committee.
