DeVonta Smith and former Alabama players introduce a new wrinkle to the Eagles' practice
It's hard to believe that DeVonta Smith enters year five as an Eagle. We've come a long way. His first reception doubled as his first TD vs. the Atlanta Falcons in the same Mercedes Benz Stadium in which he caught that pass from Tagovailoa years earlier. He set Philadelphia's franchise rookie record for receiving yards (916). He has won a Super Bowl, catching the aforementioned "Dagger" in his home state of Louisiana,
Fast forward to the present, and Smith, now one of the elder statesmen on offense, is adding a helping hand wherever he can. Recently, a conversation about contested catches with head coach Nick Sirianni led to the introduction of a new drill he once ran as a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide while terrorizing the college football landscape en route to his second CFP National Championship and the Heisman Trophy.
Coach Sirianni spoke about this before the Eagles took the field for their fourth training camp practice since returning to the NovaCare Complex.
The next time you see Smith 'Moss' somebody. Remember, he works hard to be as good as and as talented as he is. As of this story's release, he's recovering from some tightness in his back, so he sat out of the aforementioned fourth training camp workout. Fear not. His absence was precautionary. All signs point to him being on the field and present for the regular-season Week 1 opener vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

So, what does that mean for everyone in Round 5 and beyond? Truthfully, this isn't an exact science. Teams have found contributors on Day 3 of drafts, but there is also a greater risk. If an organization strikes gold, label it a bonus because few teams expect to find an All-Pro at the end of the draft. That's why Jordan Mailata, a seventh-rounder, is so special. He's an exception. So was Jason Kelce (Round 6). Mac McWilliams (Round 5) hopes to become a great Eagle in his own right. He's off to a good start. He has impressed at Eagles camp. Players met with those same media members once it wrapped. McWilliams was on deck. He didn't speak long, maybe five minutes at the most. He was, however, asked about one of his most impressive plays of camp, his breakup of an end zone toss while in coverage on second-year Bird, 2024 sixth-round draft choice Johnny Wilson. Keep in mind the fact that McWilliams stands at five feet ten and weighs 185 pounds. Wilson is a cool six feet six and tips the scales at 228. Talk about a size mismatch, one Wilson should have won. Philadelphia is hoping Wilson can use that size as a weapon and seize an opportunity at camp. So far, he hasn't. He had better turn the corner quickly because he isn't guaranteed a roster spot. McWilliams, on the other hand, has been impressive, not just in splash plays but on a day-in, day-out basis. Keep those eyes peeled. He has been seen in dime package sets as the fourth corner, and he is expected to assume the role of backup slot corner to Cooper DeJean. There is nothing significant to report yet, other than that, by the looks of things, he appears to be right on schedule.

Andy Staples names Notre Dame's Mike Denbrock as one of the nation's top OC's
We saw the impact that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock had in his first season with Notre Dame last fall, helping guide them all the way to the College Football Playoff championship game. Now that the majority of the returning players have a year of knowing the offense under their belts, there is plenty of potential that the Irish could have a sleeping giant on offense. On3's Andy Staples sees that it very well could be the case, and named Denbrock as his No. 2 offensive coordinator in the game behind only Oregon's Will Stein. Denbrock had the Notre Dame offense humming last fall, scoring 36.1 points-per-game, which was good for No. 8 nationally. The Irish averaged just short of 400 yards-per-game, with impeccable balance, as both the rushing and passing yards were right about at 200-per contest. This coming season will be a much different task, as Notre Dame is still deciding on which quarterback, CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey, will lead the offense this fall. Denbrock will have his work cut out for him, but if he can replicate the success that the Irish had on offense last year, he'll be worth every penny. Josh Heupel details Boo Carter's status with Tennessee football
Tennessee will kick off fall training camp Wednesday in preparation for its 2025 football season. Fifth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with media on Tuesday ahead of the Vols' first practice. He discussed sophomore defensive back Boo Carter and his status with Tennessee's football program. "Boo is a part of our team here," Heupel said. "There's some things that he's got to accomplish to get back on the field with us. Don't have a set timeline on that. Our leadership council has been part of those things, those discussions, with me and with Boo." The 5-foot-11, 220-pound defensive back appeared in al 13 games for the Vols as a freshman in 2024. He recorded 38 tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, one pass deflection and 12 punt return attempts for 198 yards. Carter earned 2024 SEC All-Freshman Team honors and was named to the 2024 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. Following the College Football Playoff, he announced a return to Tennessee as a sophomore in 2025. He went to the Vols from Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennessee.
