Joshi ends Nagpur's 68-year wait, becomes city's first basketball official to head MSBA
Joshi, who is the president of the Nagpur District Basketball Association (NDBA), was elected unopposed as the new MSBA president during the AGM and elections held at the Indian Gymkhana in Matunga, Mumbai, on Friday.
While Joshi became the new head of MSBA, NDBA secretary Bhavesh Kuchanwar was named vice president of the state association. Mumbai's Govind Krishnan Muthukumar has been elected secretary, and Ibrahim Lakdawla will serve as treasurer of MSBA.
After the MSBA officials came to know about the reinstatement of its affiliation with the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) — that was kept in abeyance since March 1, 2019 — the state basketball body officials started the election process. The NDBA actively participated in the election process.
On June 27, the BFI finally reinstated the affiliation of MSBA (a copy of the affiliation is with TOI), which was under dispute for the last six years.

A total of 31 district associations affiliated with MSBA attended the AGM, and a new body for the term 2025-2029 was elected.
In addition to Kuchanwar, the other three vice presidents of MSBA are Vikrant Patil, S Ramakrishnan, and M Venkatesh. Pune's Lalit Nahata and Amravati's Jayant Deshmukh have been elected as the two associate secretaries of MSBA. The new executive members of MSBA include Shrinivas Sape, Manoj Reddy, Sashikant Nandgaokar, and Ashwin Chandel.
The four district representatives of the committee are from Ratnagiri, Nanded, Jalgaon, and Beed.
The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and the Maharashtra Olympic Association (MOA) appointed observers for the election process. Shakti Sinh Gohil of Gujarat represented the BFI, and Pradeep Gandhe was the MOA observer. The returning officer for the elections was advocate Abhishek Salian.
In his post on X after becoming the head of MSBA, Joshi said, "I am committed to developing national-level players in Maharashtra, building modern infrastructure and finding solutions to players' problems. This position is a moment that proves the strength of Nagpur's sports world."

Boxing Federation of India braces for polls after months of turmoil
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Months of uncertainty due to governance issues, turf wars and internal power struggles are set to end when the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) holds its much-delayed elections on Thursday. The hope, finally, is that action inside the ring will reclaim the spotlight. Two-time president Ajay Singh is seeking a third consecutive term. The SpiceJet MD has remained the central figure in Indian boxing even after the tenure of the previous office-bearers expired on February 2. Until early this month, he also headed the World Boxing-appointed interim committee that was running BFI's daily affairs, an arrangement seen as a sign of his influence with the newly-formed world body. During this period, new coaches were appointed for the men's and women's teams, the constitution was amended, and the controversial selection assessment process was also tweaked. A revised system for national camp selections is also in place. Interestingly, the interim committee under Singh named Kerala state unit chief D. Chandralal, who was one of the candidates for the president's post during the March elections, as head coach of the women's team. Earlier this month, the interim committee also lifted the suspension of former secretary general Hemanta Kalita in the run-up to the polls. Both Chandralal and Kalita will vote in the elections. But the committee's very legitimacy has been under scrutiny. The Indian Olympic Association's fact-finding commission recommended its termination for violating the National Sports Code, 2011. Additionally, several state units have also taken legal action against the constitutional amendments introduced by the interim body. Although the Delhi High Court has allowed elections to go ahead, it has made the results subject to the final outcome of the ongoing case. The power struggle has already taken a toll on athletes. Factional fights delayed the women's Nationals. And in the new Olympic cycle, which began under a new global governing body, Indian boxers are still adjusting to revised weight categories. While male boxers have competed in two international events, their female counterparts have managed only one. With big-ticket events likes the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled for next year, the stakes are high. Singh's only challenger is 1984 Olympian and Sikkim state unit chief Jaslal Pradhan, who is expected to be backed by the rival bloc comprising the likes of Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi units. The faction has accused Singh of running the federation in an autocratic manner, pointing to decisions such as the appointment of foreign coaches without consultation with the BFI executive committee. If Pradhan wins, it remains uncertain whether the new EC will retain existing systems. Changes could potentially cause fresh disruptions in boxers' training and development. Elections were originally slated for March 28 but were stalled by a barrage of petitions, appeals and counter-appeals. Nearly six months later, the elections will finally take place. Indian boxers' build-up to World Championships hit by visa trouble
The Indian boxers' planned training trip to the UK ahead of the all-important World Championships has been hampered due to visa-related complications. The squad was scheduled to travel on Sunday to take part in a multinational training camp in Sheffield, a key build-up to the World Championships in Liverpool from September 4 to 14. However, only four women boxers and a few members of the coaching staff have managed to secure visas and reach the UK. The 10-member men's team and six women pugilists are still awaiting their clearances and remain at the national camp in NIS Patiala. At present, the male boxers have the services of only one coach as three others, including head coach Dharmendra Yadav, are already in Sheffield. "Yes, the three of us have reached here but all the (male) boxers are still waiting for their visas," Yadav told PTI. "We had to start sparring in the multinational camp from Wednesday but we cancelled it as we don't know when the visa will arrive and when the boxers will be able to reach here." The Interim Committee, which is managing the day-to-day affairs of the Boxing Federation of India, said it's in "constant touch" with Indian Embassy in the UK, Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India "to help expedite the visa process". "However, as the process is largely automated, interventions so far have not been able to resolve the delays," committee member Col Arun Malik said. "That said, we have received 3 more visas, and 12 members of our 31-member contingent, including 4 women boxers, have already reached England. "On our part, all logistical arrangements are ready, and the moment we have clarity, we will ensure that the remaining players travel to England without delay. We remain hopeful that the pending cases will be resolved soon, enabling the entire team to join the camp at the earliest," he added. Those who have reached Sheffield include two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Minakshi, Pooja Rani, and Nupur Sheoran. While the likes of Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, Commonwealth Games bronze-winner Jaismine Lamboria, Asain Games medallist Narender Berwal, among others, are still in Patiala. "Four (female) boxers have reached and 2 coaches are there in the UK. I have received my visa but I stayed back for the BFI elections," said women's head coach D Chandralal, who is a representative of the Kerala boxing state unit for the August 21 BFI elections. "But I have given the plan to the coaches there and they will conduct training according to that. They have some sparring sessions scheduled. In the meantime after the elections I'll stay with the rest of the boxers," he added. Sheffield, home to the Great Britain Boxing headquarters, is one of the sport's most prominent training hubs. The multinational camp, running from August 17 to September 1, features teams from Ireland, France, Germany, Uzbekistan, the USA, and Poland, among others. This edition of the World Championships will be the first to be held under the aegis of the new governing body -- World Boxing. It will feature competitions across 10 weight classes for both men and women and, for the first time, male and female boxers will compete in Olympic-style events at the same championship.
