S'gor MB: 212 witness statements recorded in gas pipeline probe

The Star03-07-2025
CYBERJAYA: Police recorded statements from 212 witnesses during the investigation into the gas explosion incident at Putra Heights before ruling out negligence or criminal elements, says Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Among the witnesses are Subang Jaya City Council officers, the developer of a project near the site, security guards, excavator operators and PETRONAS staff.
He said the report was compiled independently and without the involvement of the state.
Amirudin also dismissed claims by some quarters that the report had been manipulated.
'There is a party disputing the report and accusing it of spinning the story.
'Perceptions must be backed by accurate and scientific proof, which is what is being done,' he said, referring to the special committee that would be formed to review the findings and propose follow-up actions to the state.
Amirudin said this at a press conference during the launch of the Sepang Municipal Council, Selangor Local Draft Plan 2035 (Amendment) Publicity and Public Participation Programme at Semarak Hall in Cyberjaya today (July 3).
Although the police have classified the case as 'no further action', Amirudin said if any evidence emerges from the report, relevant parties could take action.
'The report will give an idea of what happened and who could be the responsible party.
'Anyone who wants to check the findings will be able to do so.
'I have no issue with the report being scrutinised,' he said.
On April 1, a gas pipeline fire caused widespread destruction, affecting 81 homes with more than 40% structural damage.
Another 81 houses were partially destroyed, while 57 were affected but not burned.

Cops bust illegal gambling hub for migrants

SERDANG: Authorities have uncovered an illegal online gambling hub catering primarily to undocumented migrants, operating out of three units in a four-storey apartment block in Pusat Bandar Putra Permai. The centre was busted during a joint raid by the Immigration Department, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the General Operations Force on Tuesday. Immigration deputy director-general (operations) Jafri Embok Taha said preliminary investigations revealed that the units were registered under the names of three local individuals. 'When officers arrived, the premises were already empty. It's believed the suspects had fled, leaving behind only a few tablets, monitors, chairs and tables. 'We've handed over the case to MBSJ for further investigation and action,' he said during a press conference after the raid. All three units were equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor external movement and catered primarily to undocumented migrants residing in the same apartment block. Jafri said 496 undocumented migrants were sent to the Semenyih Immigration Detention Centre after 741 foreigners were rounded up during the operation, which took place from 10pm to 1am. 'The suspected offences involve the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007,' he told Bernama. He said similar joint operations would continue and reminded the public not to employ, shelter or accommodate foreigners without valid travel documents.

Illegal online gambling den raided in Serdang, 496 undocumented migrants detained

SERDANG: A joint operation led by the Immigration Department, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), and the General Operations Force uncovered an illegal online gambling den operating from three units of a four-storey apartment in Pusat Bandar Putra Permai. The raid, conducted late last night, found the premises abandoned, with only equipment such as tablets, monitors, and furniture left behind. Immigration deputy director-general of operations Jafri Embok Taha confirmed that the units were registered under local individuals based on utility bills. 'The suspects had fled before the raid. The case has been handed over to MBSJ for further action,' he said. The setup included CCTV cameras to monitor movements, targeting undocumented migrants (PATI) as customers. During the operation, 741 foreigners were inspected, with 496 detained for various immigration offences. They were taken to the Semenyih Immigration Detention Centre. 'Violations include breaches of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1966, and Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act 2007,' Jafri added. He also highlighted the ongoing Migrant Repatriation Programme (PRM) 2.0, allowing undocumented migrants to return home by paying RM520 (RM500 compound + RM20 special pass fee). The programme runs until April 2026, with four PRM centres in Selangor. - Bernama
