Joel Klatt Reveals Program Most Likely to Make First College Football Playoff Appearance
Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt believes 2025 could be the year the Illinois Fighting Illini break through college football's glass ceiling — and he's not hedging.

In a recent episode of "The Joel Klatt Show," Klatt singled out Illinois as the team most likely to make its first College Football Playoff appearance this season, citing their continuity, physical identity and veteran leadership on both sides of the ball.
"Bret Bielema has built this team into what he wants. Physical, tough. They win against South Carolina in the bowl game. They show the level that they can get to, and that team that won that day is essentially all back," Klatt said. "Sixteen starters are back, nine on offense, seven on defense. Luke Altmyer is back for his third season. … I think they've hit the lottery in the Big Ten."
Bielema, now entering his fifth season in Champaign, has quietly turned Illinois into a Big Ten dark horse. After going 5-7 in his debut season in 2021, he has gone 8-5, 7-6 and 10-3 in the years since, culminating in a 21-17 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Citrus Bowl to close out the 2024 season.

A big reason for Illinois' optimism is quarterback Luke Altmyer. The Ole Miss Rebels transfer had a breakout campaign last fall, throwing for 2,717 yards and 22 touchdowns. His familiarity with Bielema's system, combined with a fully intact offensive line, has Klatt bullish.
"We've seen what returning production, returning experience does, in particular at the quarterback position," Klatt noted. "The entire offensive line is back. The question is at wide receiver. [Illinois] has to replace their top two receivers from last year: Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin."
To help with that, Illinois added West Virginia Mountaineers transfer wide receiver Hudson Clement, along with his brother, running back Murphy Clement, through the portal.
On defense, the Illini return key playmakers like linebacker Kenenna Odeluga and safety Matthew Bailey, part of a unit that finished in the top 35 nationally in scoring defense last year. Illinois also added several transfer players to its defensive line, including James Thompson Jr. (Wisconsin), Curt Neal (Wisconsin), Tomiwa Durojaiye (Florida State) and Carter Hewitt (Northern Iowa).

The expanded 12-team playoff format gives programs like Illinois a real shot, and Klatt sees a perfect storm brewing in Champaign.
If Bielema can keep the momentum rolling and Altmyer takes another leap, the Illini might not just contend in the Big Ten. They might crash the playoff party for the first time in school history.

How many teams ranked in the US LBM Coaches Poll does Texas A&M play this season?
Texas A&M's 2025 college football schedule is deemed one of the toughest in the country, mainly due to the five road games that will define the Aggies' season, starting with facing Notre Dame on the road in Week 3. Last season, coach Mike Elko entered his inaugural campaign with high hopes before several key injuries hindered the program's performance late in the year. However, losing to Notre Dame in Kyle Field to open the season put the Aggies behind the sticks most of the year, despite starting 7-1 before ending 1-4 after star running back Le'Veon Moss was lost for the season. Losing Moss was preceded by a former five-star running back, Rueben Owens, going down early during the 2024 preseason, placing A&M in an immediate hole in the backfield from a depth perspective. I'm not saying Texas A&M was lucky to finish 8-5 last season, because a nine- or ten-win season was in reach if Moss hadn't been injured, but that's just how the game goes, and no one, especially Mike Elko, is making excuses. Less than a month into the offseason, Elko and his staff retained 72% of the 2024 roster and added 14 players from the transfer portal. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed entered the offseason as the full-time starter, focused on improving as a passer. Under Elko's defensive play-calling, the defense should be better, especially in coverage. At the same time, OC Collin Klein now has the loaded roster he needs, especially in the trenches, to produce a balanced attack, especially with more speed at wide receiver, knowing transfers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver have dominated in camp so far. On Monday, the first US LBM Top 25 Coaches Poll was released, with Texas A&M ranked 21st, which isn't surprising given the usual lack of roster examination from a bulk of the head coaches who vote. Still, it's always a good thing to enter every season underrated, but per the rankings, the Aggies will face five ranked opponents, including four in the SEC. USA TODAY recently ranked Texas A&M's 2025 schedule the 7th toughest nationally, and the path to the College Football Playoff has not changed. The Aggies will likely need to defeat either Notre Dame, LSU, or Texas while taking care of business against Arkansas and Missouri on the road. Losing to either Florida or South Carolina at home might not matter, but finishing undefeated in Kyle Field will only increase the program's chances of earning a playoff berth. 'It put a chip on my shoulder': Texas A&M LB reflects on Texas recruiting snub
On Tuesday, Netflix released its much-anticipated college football series, "SEC Football: Any Given Saturday," which featured several SEC teams' journey during the 2024 college football season, including Texas A&M. While LSU, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina were heavily features, the revival of the Lone Star Showdown after the Texas Longhorns entered the SEC last summer was the primary focus during the second to final episode. However, Aggie fans have correctly pointed out that, outside of LSU's 38-23 loss in Kyle Field, every game Texas A&M was featured in was one of the team's five losses, including South Carolina and Auburn, two games that essentially ended A&M's College Football Playoff hopes. Still, the player interviews alone are worth the watch, starting and ending with Texas A&M junior linebacker Taurean York, who has been the team's starting middle linebacker since his 2023 freshman season. York finished the 2024 season with a team-high 82 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and his first career interception, and is considered one of the top defensive prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft. As an underrated prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, the Temple, Texas native, grew up a little less than an hour away from Austin, Texas, but did not receive any attention or an offer from the Longhorns, which was further revealed during his Thanksgiving trip back home before facing Texas that Saturday night. "(The game against Texas) for me, is extremely personal. I grew up 50 minutes away from the university of Texas. I was a top-1000 player. They never really called me, they never really showed me any attention. I had a high school teammate who was recruited by Texas and they flew a helicopter all the way down in Temple. My coach called me in there and sat in that meeting with them, those guys wouldn't give me the time of day. It put a chip on my shoulder for sure, but Texas A&M loved me through and through. They loved me for who I was as a player, as a person. That's when I closed the book on Texas." That's recruiting in a nutshell, and even Mike Elko, who was entering his second season as Duke's head coach at the time, tried everything in his power to lure York to North Carolina, not knowing he would inherit the elite defender just a year later. Texas A&M will travel to Austin this season to face a Longhorns team ranked No. 1 in the first US LBM Coaches Poll, this time on Black Friday. Former Nebraska lineman Ty Robinson records first sack with the Philadelphia Eagles
A former Nebraska defensive tackle recorded his first professional sack on Wednesday night. Philadelphia Eagles rookie Ty Robinson sacked Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning in the second quarter of his first preseason game. Eagles drafted Ty Robinson with the ninth pick in the fourth round. The defensive tackle had an impressive 2024 for the Cornhuskers. In 13 games, he recorded 37 tackles, 13.0 for loss, and 7.0 sacks. His performance was good enough to earn Third-Team All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and media. He has tallied 130 tackles and 11 sacks in five seasons with the Huskers.
