Coopers Rock stargazing cabins win architecture award ahead of opening
BRUCETON MILLS, W.Va. (WBOY) — The stargazing cabins at Coopers Rock State Forest are already award-winning, and they aren't even open yet.
The A-frame cabins are the first designated stargazing cabins in West Virginia and are located between the famous Coopers Rock Overlook and Ravens Rock. The cabin design by ZMM Architects and Engineers was given with 2025 AIA Honor Awards from the West Virginia Chapter for Excellence in Architecture and Excellence in Craftsmanship.
Each cabin has floor-to-ceiling windows, retractable skylights and high-powered telescopes for immersive stargazing. The cabins are also placed in a strategic location to minimize light pollution.

Although the cabins were originally scheduled to open in 2024, according to the West Virginia State Parks website, the opening date was pushed back due to construction delays. ZMM has the completion date listed as 2025.
'Thank you for your continued patience and support, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Coopers Rock cabins as soon as possible,' the West Virginia State Parks website says.
You can see more photos of the cabins on ZMM's website. For the latest updates on the stargazing cabins opening and booking options, check back on the WV Parks website and follow the West Virginia Department of Tourism on social media.

East Coast's longest sled run in West Virginia opens Christmas week
DAVIS, (WBOY) — The longest sled run on the East Coast is scheduled to open for the year just in time for Christmas. The sled run off Canaan Loop Road Tucker County's Blackwater Falls State Park is a quarter-mile long—one of the longest in the country, but the big draw is that a 'wonder carpet' or small conveyer takes sledders to the top of the hill so they don't have to walk up it. The run is well maintained, and tickets can be purchased for a two-hour time slot. The first day the sled run will operate this season is on Saturday, Dec. 21. By that time, multiple ski slopes in the Davis area will also be open, giving adventure seeking options for winter recreation activities in Tucker County. Land between Canaan Valley and Dolly Sods turned into new preserve A two-hour session on the run costs $28-33, depending on the day you go, and the run is open Thursday-Saturday, with additional operating dates around Christmas and New Year's. The sled run will be open, weather permitting, through the first weekend in March. Kids under five are free with a paying adult. More information and ticket sale information is available on the West Virginia State Parks website. If you're looking for other sledding experiences in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry's Tubing Hill at River Riders, which is the longest designated tubing slope in the East Coast, is already open for the season, and the tubing hill at Chestnut Ridge Park in Monongalia County is expected to open later this month.
