MUNICH : Bayer Leverkusen have signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Premier League side Brentford, the Bundesliga club announced today.
German media reported Leverkusen paid €10 million to secure the 31-year-old's services.
Flekken, who signed a deal running to 2028, will likely take over from current Leverkusen goalie Lukas Hradecky, who captained the side to their historic unbeaten league and cup double in 2023-24.
In a statement, Flekken said he was taking 'another special step in my career', adding that Leverkusen are 'a top German club with high national and European goals'.
Leverkusen are expected to undergo a rebuild this off-season, with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag having already replaced the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso as coach.
Centreback Jonathan Tah signed on a free transfer with German champions Bayern Munich, while midfielder Florian Wirtz is in talks to join wingback Jeremie Frimpong in moving to Premier League winners Liverpool.
The Dutch keeper has Bundesliga experience, having spent five years at Freiburg before making the switch to Brentford in 2023.

Mercedes sees itself as ‘sounding board' in tariff talks, says CEO
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kaellenius said negotiations take place at the EU level because trade policy falls within the EU's remit. (EPA Images pic) BERLIN : Mercedes-Benz views itself as a 'sounding board' that contributes ideas in tariff negotiations between the EU and the US, CEO Ola Kaellenius told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper today. 'As a company, we hold talks with political decision-makers – in the EU as well as in China and the US,' said Kaellenius. 'However, negotiations take place at EU level because trade policy falls within the EU's remit. 'We are available as a sounding board, contributing ideas and presenting scenarios showing how certain decisions would affect us,' he added. Mercedes-Benz, as well as BMW and Volkswagen, are in talks with Washington over a possible import tariff deal, sources told Reuters late last month. 'Under one proposal on the table, German carmakers would get credits for cars they export from the US, which could then be deducted from tariffs,' one of the sources said. Kaellenius' interview was published hours before Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, will hold his first face-to-face talks with US President Donald Trump as Europe seeks to stave off looming US tariffs.

Italians Errani and Vavassori cruise to French Open mixed doubles title
Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori of Italy also won the US Open last year. (AFP pic) PARIS : Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori of Italy swept to a 6-4 6-2 victory over Americans Taylor Townsend and Evan King on Court Philippe Chatrier to claim the French Open mixed doubles crown on Thursday. Errani and Vavassori claimed their second mixed doubles Grand Slam crown, with the first coming at the US Open last year where they also defeated Townsend and her longtime former partner Donald Young. The Italian duo were tested early in the first set but saved two breakpoints to secure a tight hold at 1-1, before grabbing the decisive break and taking a 4-3 lead when Townsend sent a forehand wide. Errani and Vavassori dialled up the intensity to overwhelm their opponents, twice breaking serve in the second set before Townsend netted a volley to give the third seeds a dominant win. The American pairing looked disjointed throughout the match and racked up 25 unforced errors, almost three times as many as Errani and Vavassori's nine.

Kean has had the best season of his career, scoring 19 Serie A goals for Fiorentina having failed to find the net once at Juventus in the previous campaign. The 25-year-old started both legs of Italy's Nations League quarter-final against Germany in March and scored twice. Mateo Retegui, last season's top scorer in Serie A, is expected to replace him in the team. Italy, who have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, begin their Group I qualifying campaign away to Norway on Friday, before hosting Moldova on Monday. Spalletti has also lost midfielder Manuel Locatelli and defender Matteo Gabbia to injury, and Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi withdrew from the squad on Sunday.
