Missing WWDITS? Watch These Similar Shows

Buzz Feed2 days ago
For the first time since 2018, there will be no new season of What We Do in the Shadows. The FX comedy-horror series saw its series finale on Dec 16. The mockumentary following a house of vampires living in Staten Island...in "New York Citayyyyyy" was truly one of a kind, and gave us big laughs. Don't be sad because it's over, be happy because it happened!
That leaves an open slot for a lot of TV watchers, so if you loved WWDITS, you should check out these other hilarious shows:
Wellington Paranormal (2018–2022)
If this mockumentary comedy-horror seems very similar to WWDITS, well, that's because it's a spinoff of the What We Do in the Shadows film. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are also the brains behind the operation.Officers Minogue and O'Leary (from the original WWDITS movie) lead investigations of supernatural activity in New Zealand. Watch it on Hulu.
Reservation Dogs (2021–2023)
It's another FX series like WWDITS, co-created by, you guessed it, Taika Waititi. Reservation Dogs is the first American series directed and written entirely by Indigenous people. The humor is very dry, and the punchlines are delivered similarly to WWDITS.Follow the misadventures and struggles of Indigenous teens living in rural Oklahoma.Watch it on Hulu.
People of Earth (2016–2017)
This leans more sci-fi than supernatural, but People of Earth checks all the boxes for ridiculous comedy. Wyatt Cenac, Brian Huskey, and Ana Gasteyer are just a few of the great actors in this hilarious show. A journalist investigates a support group in New York for people who believe aliens abducted them.Watch it on Prime Video.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005—present)
A little raunchier than WWDITS, but if "meme-ability" is your metric of choice, this series is filthy with content. As a sidenote, Danny DeVito would have made an excellent vampire in WWDITS.Misadventures of a group of friends, called "The Gang," stoop to the lowest of lows inside Paddy's Pub and beyond.Watch it on Hulu.
Merlin (2008–2012)
I think "cheeky" is an appropriate word for Merlin. Although not as direct in the comedy genre as other shows on this list, the spirit of WWDITS is present.A young sorcerer befriends a prince, and the two set off on adventures that mold them into two legendary figures.Watch it on Tubi.
Reginald the Vampire (2022–2024)
Maybe it's too on the nose because it's a vampiric comedy, but this should definitely be on the radar of any WWDITS fans. Starring Jacob Batalon, the show feels, at the very least, inspired by WWDITS.Reginald seeks to be a hero and navigate a world of vampires where his image doesn't quite fit the norm.Watch it on Hulu.
Trailer Park Boys (2001–2007 and 2014–2018)
Another mockumentary with a lot of raunch and a lot of beer. It's not a one-size-fits-all shoe, but if you like it, you'll love it. It was so loved that Netflix revived the series.Three felons document their trailer park lives.Watch it on Netflix.
Extraordinary (2023–2024)
Vampires technically have powers, so a comedy series like Hulu's Extraordinary might be right up your alley. An ordinary woman lives in a world where everyone else has a superpower.Watch it on Hulu.
Brassic (2019–2024)
A buddy comedy that has that WWDITS feel to it. Which is to say: that wit and grit.Inseparable, lifelong friends face a wedge between them in the form of one of their girlfriends, who is moving in.Watch it on Hulu.
Workaholics (2011–2017)
The stoner comedy to end all stoner comedies. It was Adam Devine's big introduction to the world, but Blake Anderson and Anders Holm elevate this trio to legendary status.Friends work together and live together, never getting a break from each other or their stoner habits and shenanigans.Watch it on Hulu.
Our Flag Means Death (2022–2023)
Another Taika Waititi work that is as awkward as it is funny. A lot of heart in this one. If you can go into it blind, I highly suggest it.Based on the true stories of the "Gentleman Pirate," Stede Bonnet confronts both his mid-life crisis and terrifying pirate waters ruled by the legendary Blackbeard.Watch it on HBO Max.
The Righteous Gemstones (2019–2025)
Danny McBride is an acquired taste, but there is no arguing he has earned the right to say he is one of the funniest creators in TV comedy. This dark comedy has a surprising amount of drama.Follow a televangelist and his entire family's greed and sins.Watch it on HBO Max.
Mid Morning Matters with Alan Partridge (2010–2016)
If you've never watched anything by Steve Coogan, he's a genius at dry and witty comedy. His recurring character Alan Partridge will keep you on your feet and give you plenty of belly laughs. The always awkward Alan Partridge hosts a local radio mid-morning show at North Norfolk Digital, where he fights to deliver relevant and topical news.Watch it on Prime Video. (This show is not available in the US for streaming.)
Abbott Elementary (2021–present)
Okay, so this sitcom doesn't exactly scream WWDITS. That said, it's probably the greatest sitcom of the 2020s, so it's worth mentioning if you're looking to watch a comedy.A group of passionate teachers collaborates at a Philadelphia school to help their students and each other overcome the odds stacked against them.Watch it on Hulu.

Robert De Niro in a Feel-Good Movie? Yup, and It's Trending in Netflix's Top 10

Every week, Netflix unveils its Top 10 lists for the week before, ranking TV shows and movies by viewership. While Netflix regularly churns out new ripped-from-the-headlines documentaries and original action films that tend to dominate audience views every week (Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is No. 1 -- how could it not be with a title like that), one of the biggest films in the Netflix Top 10 for the week of June 23 is a charming, understated comedy from 2015. The Intern, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, was written and directed by coastal-grandma auteur Nancy Meyers, but unlike so many of her most popular films, The Intern is not a rom-com. Instead, it's a tender story of friendship between a widowed retiree named Ben (De Niro) and fashion entrepreneur Jules (Hathaway), whose company hires him as an intern. While Jules, a successful woman who runs an e-commerce fashion website, initially brushes off Ben's gentlemanly charm and advice as old-fashioned, they soon develop a mentor-mentee relationship where, in a surprising twist, Ben is the mentor. Jules is dealing with a cheating husband, a busy home life and the threat of being ousted by her own board members. She's stressed, and Ben is the last person she needs to babysit. Maybe in less capable hands, Ben would come off as more paternal or instructive, but De Niro's portrayal is so gentle and full of respect and reverence for Jules' success that he's a comfort to watch. (The movie was originally cast with Tina Fey and Michael Caine as the leads, which would have made for a much different film.) Warner Bros. De Niro typically toggles between tough guy roles and roles that parody being a tough guy, and here he's allowed to be something completely different. As a widower searching for both connection and purpose, Ben's desire to help Jules is genuine, and once she gets past her own preconceived notions about him, their mutual empathy for one another becomes the foundation for a deeper friendship. The film contains all the hallmarks of a Nancy Meyers movie: New romance, gorgeous kitchens -- the woman knows what the people want. Jules has a fabulously glossy Brooklyn home, and while Ben develops a romance with a massage therapist (played by Renee Russo), but this movie is distinctly a workplace comedy, not a rom-com. However, The Intern even more than that, it's a true feel-good movie, an antidote to a bad mood. The polar opposite of Poop Cruise. (Listen, I'm not knocking it, I totally watched Poop Cruise. With that title, how could you not?) Since The Intern, De Niro has worked relentlessly, mostly playing criminals again in films like Killers of the Flower Moon, The Irishman and The Alto Knights. Maybe The Intern's popularity on Netflix will make him realize we're thirsty to see more of that big softie we know is buried beneath that tough exterior.
