Ado, ATARASHII GAKKO! & YOASOBI Showcase Best of Today's J-Pop at matsuri '25 Event in L.A.

Yahoo26-03-2025

Ado, ATARASHII GAKKO! and YOASOBI graced the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for matsuri '25: Japanese Music Experience LOS ANGELES on Sunday, March 16, the music event by Japan's Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association (CEIPA).
YOASOBI opened the show, and when the duo's name on a banner flashed on the screen behind the stage, the 7,000 fans in the audience cheered loudly. As the banner was torn down by the hand of a monster, low-pitched sounds and mysterious music played over the speakers. ikura and Ayase appeared on stage to the announcement, 'Welcome to the world of Surrealism,' and the crowd shouted and waved their glow sticks to express their excitement. The intro to 'Seventeen' began to play after a brief silence, and ikura said in English, 'Welcome to matsuri '25. We are YOASOBI from Japan. Get ready to have a blast tonight. L.A., are you guys ready?' Fans responded with shouts of 'Oi! Oi!' and the band kicked off the event with a bang.

ikura took a moment to explain the purpose of the event, saying, 'Three acts from Japan — Ado, ATARASHII GAKKO!, and YOASOBI — have come this time, hoping to enjoy great music, J-pop music, with everyone here.' She then asked the audience to light up their phones and sway to create a sense of unity, and the duo performed the poignant mid-tempo ballad 'Tabun.'
Following 'The Brave,' the band performed 'Monster,' a fast-paced track with thumping low beats that satisfy performed live. 'As a J-Pop artist, we've been trying to spread our music from Japan to the world,' said ikura in English. 'We are so so so happy to be able to share with all of you. Thank you very much. I love you guys. We dive into the second half. Let me see your passion, OK? You ready to go loud? Can you give us some more? Ok, let's sing together.' The pair then went on to perform some of its biggest hits back-to-back, with the exhilaration of 'Into the Night,' the unity of the chorus in 'Blue,' and the energy and enthusiasm of the audience in 'Idol' filling the venue. The overwhelming delivery of the last three songs proved that YOASOBI has indeed become one of Japan's top acts whose concerts sell out instantly whenever they perform overseas today.
Following a 15-minute changeover, the four members of ATARASHII GAKKO! appeared from the audience aisle to the sound of ringing school bells, holding big white flags over their heads. When the members — SUZUKA, RIN, MIZYU, and KANON — gathered on stage, SUZUKA greeted the crowd with the sound of a trumpet in the background: 'Hello everyone. We are ATARASHII GAKKO! Everybody, are you ready?' The words 'Seishun Nihon Daihyo' (Youth Team Japan) appeared on the screen and the women began their set with 'Change,' the members swinging their arms around and performing immaculate choreography off the bat. During 'Fly High,' RIN called out, 'L.A., are you ready? Jump!' and fans were more than happy to comply. For 'Arigato,' each member sang while holding a broomstick like a microphone stand, or fake-played it like a guitar, playfully reminding us of our school days. The audience reacted enthusiastically to the intro of the group's breakout hit 'Otona Blue,' and the members captivated the crowd with their signature head-shaking dance and distinctive choreography.
Following a group chant with SUZUKA, who hyped up the audience calling out, 'Everybody, ganbatte (hang in there)! Woo!' the women performed 'Toryanse.' Fans waved their glow sticks towards the stage during the intro and danced to the lively rhythm accompanied by electronic sounds of Japanese instruments. Each of the four members called out, 'Everybody jump!' 'Say yeah!' and 'Say change!' in time with the lyrics during the set, confidently charging the crowd with their energy.
An image of the Tokyo metropolis appeared on the screen and ATARASHII GAKKO! launched into 'Tokyo Calling.' SUZUKA came down from the stage and sang enthusiastically while making her way through the crowd, regally marching back to the lyrics of 'We are marching.' The women closed their set with 'One Heart,' the word 'SAIKO' ('the best') appearing behind them on the screen, and the audience joined in and sang along. The lyrics 'AG want to take you higher' is like the Japanese modern version of Ike & Tina Turner's 'I Want To Take You Higher,' and the song uplifts and inspires like the best kind of music.
Watching ATARASHII GAKKO!'s performance, this writer couldn't help but agree with what Creativeman Productions' Rob Kelso said during the press conference before the event: 'The best way to integrate these [artists] is to realize we lost the last excuse. Their last excuse was it must be in English…anything in the U.S. must be in English. And that doesn't exist anymore. Now it is ok not to be in English…let's take advantage of that. Doors are opening again to other languages.' The members of ATARASHII GAKKO! know how to entertain the crowds at their shows overseas, encouraging call-and-response with fans using short Japanese words like 'ganbatte' and 'saiko,' and getting them excited in English, saying, 'Everybody jump!' and 'Say yeah!' Plus, the group's shows never look cheap or over-the-top, thanks to the four members' well-coordinated dance moves, SUZUKA's vocal prowess, and the individuality of each member. Whether you're Japanese or American, anyone who sees ATARASHII GAKKO! will be able to enjoy its performances to the fullest, and the group's set at matsuri '25 was a testimony to that.
Then the 'Ado Box' was set up in the center of the stage for the event's final artist, the enigmatic singer Ado, who never shows her face. The 22-year-old songstress immediately launched into her hit banger 'Show,' then performed 'New Genesis,' 'Usseewa' (which sounded faster and more powerful than when this writer saw her on her North American tour a year ago), and 'Lucky Bruto' in succession. The stage production was designed to be visually enjoyable as well, with Ado performing 'RuLe' by dancing and singing while seated on a chair in her box.
After calls of 'Let's go, Ado' from the audience, the singer addressed the crowd for the first time, talking about how living in Los Angeles for a month last year was one of the best experiences of her life. She shared some episodes that showed her personality, like how she enjoyed In-N-Out burgers and going to Macy's. 'I'm proud to be able to share the stage with ATARASHII GAKKO! and YOASOBI,' she said, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to perform at the event. 'I'm so happy that you've come to experience Japanese music and culture today. It will really make me happy if you'll continue to love Japanese music and culture. This has been a really great evening. Thank you.' She then invited the audience to sing and dance with her before performing the last song of her set, 'Odo.'
It was unthinkable in the past that an artist who maintains her anonymity by never revealing her face would perform on stage in a box. But it's true that many people listen to Ado's music and when she announces shows outside of her home country, many fans rush to buy tickets. This is in line with what Goldenvoice vice president Ellen Lu said at the conference that 'festivals are booking with a global sense now. Because that is what people are listening to, so if we are to stay in touch with what people are wanting to see that is not just exclusive to the U.S. or Europe which historically has been the case. It just puts these [international] artists in front of audiences that want to see them or have never had a chance to see them.' This is why Ado was able to successfully tour the world last year, and is set to embark on her second global trek this summer at even bigger venues including arenas.
The three acts that performed at the matsuri '25 event all had previous experience performing live in North America, and it was a luxurious and precious experience to be able to see them at once. It was an evening that surely made fans want to support other Japanese artists that will follow these groups and go on to perform on the world stage.

Who Is Glen Powell's Ex-Girlfriend Gigi Paris? All About the Model — Including What She's Said About Sydney Sweeney

Glen Powell and Gigi Paris dated for nearly four years before their split in 2023 Their breakup came amid speculation that Powell had become romantically involved with his Anyone But You costar Sydney Sweeney, which both Powell and Sweeney have denied Paris addressed their breakup for the first time on the Too Much podcast in June 2025For the first time, Glen Powell's ex-girlfriend Jehane-Marie "Gigi" Paris is telling her side of the split — including what she thinks about those romance rumors with Sydney Sweeney. Paris and her boyfriend of nearly four years broke up in early 2023 amid fan speculation that Powell and Sweeney, who costarred in Anyone But You, had become romantically involved while filming the rom-com. But Powell told The New York Times in April 2024 that he and Sweeney just used the romance rumors to their advantage while promoting the film. 'The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry," he said. "Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That's people wanting what's on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully." In June 2025, Paris appeared on the Too Much podcast to address her breakup from Powell, sharing that she felt the actor was more concerned with selling a movie than protecting their relationship. "I just wanted respect," she said. "Like, don't make an ass out of me. And at the end of the day, it was like, well, work comes first. And if that's the case, power to you, that's your priority. I gotta walk away. What sucked was how it was handled. I felt like I was just fed to the dogs." So who is Glen Powell's ex-girlfriend? Here's everything to know about Gigi Paris. Paris was born in Coconut Grove, a neighborhood in Miami. She spent her younger years in the city but eventually moved to Los Angeles, where she lives "right beneath the infamous Hollywood sign," she explained in an interview with In the Face of Others. Paris has worked as a model since she was discovered when she was just 14 years old. One of the first jobs she booked was with Seventeen magazine, which she says was a huge moment for her as a young model. "I was 14 when I first started and I had never thought about modeling … like, it never occurred to me. When I first started, I booked Seventeen magazine, which was like 'Whoa!' For a little 14-year-old girl, I was so excited," Paris explained in a 2012 interview. Since then, she's booked campaigns with brands like Revolve and Nordstrom, and even walked the runway during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in 2015. While it's not known exactly when Paris and Powell began dating, they were first spotted together while vacationing in Punta Mita, Mexico, in January 2020, in photos obtained by the Daily Mail. At the time, the couple hadn't confirmed their relationship but were seen cozying up in the water and sharing a kiss on the beach. Then, a month later, Paris was by Powell's side while he attended WCRF's "An Unforgettable Evening" event — although they didn't walk the carpet together. Paris and Powell had been a rumored couple for over a year by the time they made things Instagram official in 2021. On Valentine's Day, they each shared photos from their adventures together along with sweet captions dedicated to one another. "Here's to you 💖," Paris captioned her photo, while Powell wrote, "My Ride or Die. Happy Valentines Day, y'all!" In November 2021, Powell and Paris stepped out on the red carpet together for the first time at the annual Guggenheim International Gala. Just a few days later, the couple followed up with another red carpet event when they attended the New York Moves 2021 Power Women Gala. Although Paris was born in the United States, both of her parents immigrated to the country when they were young. Her mother originally hails from France, while her father was born in Venezuela. The couple eventually met when they both attended the University of Miami. Paris says her diverse cultural background has shaped who she is as a person. "I identify with many different cultures, so I don't really identify with anything in particular. I call myself a little 'mut' of sorts. I like to think, we as people, are all one," she told In the Face of Others. Paris made her music video debut when she starred in Keith Urban's video for "Somewhere In My Car" in 2014. In the video, the model shares some steamy scenes with her male costar as they make out inside of a car in the middle of a rainstorm. In 2019, Paris traveled to Bali to train to become a yoga instructor. She spent 300 hours learning about the craft, and by the end of her stay, had earned her certification. The model now occasionally teaches yoga classes, both online and in person. Paris later wrote about the trip on Instagram, saying, "This trip is hard to put into words, but to say the least, I went in without any idea of how much it would change my life." She continued, "But I'm most thankful for the gift I came home with: the capability of teaching something that can benefit others. This practice has not only strengthened my body & mind but opened my heart to the unlimited. I strongly suggest to follow your dreams, no matter what they may be & know that the universe will always have your back!" Paris owns her own clothing brand, Jijou Paris, which she launched in 2021. The company sells hand-dyed silk garments inspired by "natural raw beauty," per Instagram, including dresses, shirts and loungewear. Powell even once served as a model for the brand. "Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible. I can't even begin to describe how rewarding it is to see this come to life," Paris wrote following the brand's launch. Paris has accompanied her movie star ex-boyfriend on many red carpets. In January 2023, Paris and Powell attended the Golden Globes together. She stunned in a sheer gold gown, while her beau looked handsome in a black tuxedo. After nearly four years together, Paris and Powell went their separate ways in early 2023. The model sparked breakup rumors in April 2023 when she unfollowed Powell on Instagram and shared a cryptic post. "Know your worth & onto the next," Paris captioned a video of herself walking down the streets of New York City and smiling. PEOPLE confirmed the rumors later that month, with a source exclusively sharing that they had broken up "several times" over the years. "They had been on the rocks since Top Gun came out. Gigi was never happy with the long-distance filming," the source said. "When she came to Australia [where Powell was filming Anyone But You], they both decided to break up for good." Fans speculated that a romantic relationship between Powell and Sweeney was to blame for the split, which Sweeney denied in August 2023 during an interview with Variety. "It's a rom-com. That's what people want!" she said. "Glen and I don't really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he's such a hard worker, and I'm a hard worker." The Euphoria star added: "They want it. It's fun to give it to 'em.' Roughly seven months after calling it quits with Paris, Powell told Business Insider that it was challenging to promote a rom-com while going through a breakup. "I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff," he shared. "It was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she's in a very committed and wonderful relationship, and she's very happy. So it was a little harder for me." Paris broke her silence about her breakup from Powell on the Too Much podcast in June 2025. The model expressed that, at the time, she felt she had two options: go along with Powell and Sweeney's alleged "PR scheme" to promote Anyone But You, or stand up for herself. "I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder, like, 'Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she okay with this? What the f---?' Or stand up for myself and say, 'No, I'm actually not okay with this, and I'm walking away.' So that's what I decided to do ... I was shattered," she explained. Paris went on to suggest that if Powell had publicly shut down the romance rumors between him and Sweeney, they might still be together. " 'I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn't do that.' That's all that needed to be said. And that wasn't said ... never once," she continued. "And I honestly hoped that they'd end up together, because I was like, at least it would make it worth it for me, you know? I hope they are in love or whatnot." Representatives for Powell and Sweeney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Read the original article on People

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Cast Premieres the First 10 Minutes of the Game's Documentary at IGN Live 2025

The cast of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stopped by IGN Live to not only discuss the beloved new game from Sandfall Interactive, but also to exclusively premiere an over 10-minute look at the game's making-of documentary. The exclusive clip, which you can see below, begins by putting the focus on the developers of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on the day before launch. It then takes viewers behind the scenes of motion capture performances, including how that emotional opening scene between Gustave and Sophie came to life and another fun moment between Monoco and Verso. While the documentary is still a work in progress and the full video may change, we were able to chat with Jennifer English (Maelle), Ben Starr (Verso), Shala Nyx (Sciel), Kirsty Rider (Lune), Rich Keeble (Monoco), and Maxence Cazorla (Esquie) about their work on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. "We were all really excited," English said of the time before the game launched. "We weren't as stressed as the developers were, but I was dead nervous about it because we put all our love and heart into it and hope it pays off - and thankfully it did." "You can do whatever you do in the studio, but then it stops being yours," Starr added. "You don't know what it's going to become. There are so many circumstances that go into the release of a game, and I felt, personally, there was a huge amount of pressure. It's a game I wanted to be good for the team because they had put so much work into it, and because we didn't just come into it, we were an additional part of it." English then went on to discuss what it was like recording for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and video games in general, and it was a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain. "I get so lonely in the booth," English joked. "You have to pretend. It's very rare in video games that you get a playmate. I think it's happened once or twice that I've had another actor in the room, so it's a real honor when people think you were together recording. Video game acting is the Olympics of acting. If you can do good acting in video games - there is some bad acting, but not in this game – you can do anything." Nyx then shared how many people have reached out to her about how her character, Sciel, has helped them with struggles in their own lives. "It's so cinematic," Nyx said. "It's just so wonderful to be the voice and body of a character that is so rich and has so much emotional depth. I've had so many people reach out to me about how my character has helped them with their depression and helped them with their mental health. It's so ephemeral and every moment is so rich and that's a testament to the writing." Lastly, Starr spoke on the emotional impact of the game and why we care so much about these pixels that became characters that mean a lot to us. The reason you cry is because there is so much joy to be lost," Starr said. "You can't have something that's just morose all the time. If these people who are so vibrantly brought to life by these actors, if we lose them, then you lose everything." For more, check out our Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 review and how the game sold 3.3 million copies in just 33 days. Adam Bankhurst is a writer for IGN. Japan Cuts to Open With Yasuhiro Aoki's ‘ChaO,' Festival's 2025 Lineup Unveiled

The upcoming 18th edition of Japan Cuts, North America's largest festival of contemporary Japanese cinema, will kick off with a special screening of ChaO, the hotly anticipated animated feature debut from director Yasuhiro Aoki. Produced by Studio 4°C, the avant-garde animation house behind Mind Game and Tekkonkinkreet, ChaO reimagines a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale through a cyberpunk lens, transporting audiences to a near-future Shanghai where humans and mermen coexist. The story follows an ordinary salaryman who is unexpectedly thrust into a diplomatic marriage with a mermaid princess, triggering a whirlwind of political absurdity and emotional discovery. With over 100,000 hand-drawn frames created over the course of seven years, Aoki's film is described as a visually extravagant and emotionally idiosyncratic passion project. Japan Cuts is hosting its U.S. premiere ahead of its theatrical release in Japan in August. Gkids has acquired the domestic rights to the film. More from The Hollywood Reporter Canadian Industry Rebuffs Trump's DEI Rollback Sony Music Publishing Acquires Hipgnosis Songs Group Trump's Trade War Will Loom Large Over the Banff World Media Fest Running July 10–20 at the Japan Society's headquarters in New York City, Japan Cuts is co-organized by Japan Society's Peter Tatara and Alexander Fee, and this year features three world premieres, nine North American premieres, and a host of special guests, receptions and live Q&As. 'We're deeply proud to celebrate Japanese film in the heart of New York City,' said Tatara. 'Each year, Japan Cuts presents a look into the contemporary Japanese cinema scene, spotlighting both major award-winners as well as rising stars, and we hope this festival helps build bridges between film lovers in New York and filmmakers in Japan — and more broadly between our two countries — with film a tremendous snapshot into modern Japan's culture, values and soul.' Among this year's marquee guests is prolific director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who will receive the 2025 Cut Above Award for outstanding achievement in film. Kurosawa will attend the New York premiere of his latest thriller Cloud as well as a screening of Serpent's Path, his 2024 French-language remake of his own 1998 V-Cinema title. Both films will be presented alongside Q&As with Kurosawa. Japan Cuts will also screen 4K restorations of the original Serpent's Path and his rarely seen 1998 feature License to Live on 35mm film. Award-winning actress Yuumi Kawai, this year's best actress honoree at the Japan Academy Film Prize, will also make an appearance. Kawai will present the North American premiere of Yu Irie's A Girl Named Ann, in which she stars as a young woman navigating life on the margins of Japanese society, as well as the U.S. premiere of She Taught Me Serendipity, directed by Akiko Ohku. Kawai also delivers a standout performance in Teki Cometh, Daihachi Yoshida's genre-bending black-and-white thriller that swept the Tokyo International Film Festival and will get its New York premiere at the festival. Further highlights include The Real You, Yuya Ishii's dark techno-mystery adapted from a novel by Keiichiro Hirano, with a live introduction and book signing from the author; A Samurai in Time, a breakout indie hit about a time-traveling Edo-era warrior; and Kowloon Generic Romance, a dreamy manga adaptation set in a romanticized version of the Kowloon Walled City. Shunji Iwai's beloved 1995 classic Love Letter will also return to the big screen in a newly restored 4K version, marking the film's 30th anniversary. The Next Generation section, the festival's sole juried category, will present a curated selection of indie features from emerging directors, with one film receiving the Obayashi Prize, named in honor of the late cult filmmaker Nobuhiko Obayashi. Japan Cuts will close on July 20 with the world premiere of The Spirit of Japan, a documentary by Joseph Overbey about a Japanese family's centuries-old shochu distillery in Kagoshima. The screening will be followed by a reception featuring shochu from the Yamatozakura Distillery and a Q&A with Overbey. The full 2025 Japan Cuts selection is below. Feature Slate Blazing Fists – Dir.
