Former Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson comments on his 2017 AFC Wild Card sack of Marcus Mariota

USA Today3 days ago
This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Kansas City Chiefs legend and franchise leader in tackles, Derrick Johnson, about his new children's book, 'Super DJ Saves Field Day,' Defend The Dream Foundation, and his memorable sack of Marcus Mariota in the 2017 AFC Wild Card playoffs.
"Right now, the littles (Derrick's children) love it because their names are in the book. But at the beginning of the book, it says, hey, you know, this is Derrick Johnson and Brittni Johnson, and this is their family, and they have six kids. They're like, Oh, snap, that's us right there. So that's kind of cool." said Johnson, "So that made them be like, alright, that I got the upper hand for them to really dive into the book, and they enjoy it because now they know it's about Dad and it's, it has them at the beginning of the book and the end of the book. So it's kind of cool. Cool seeing their reaction. I'm talking about the littles, the big boys. They're like, Oh, that's cool. They read it, but it's mainly for little kids."
Johnson had eight tackles in the 2017 AFC Wild Card Game and sacked quarterback Marcus Mariota in an electrifying manner that could have resulted in a turnover. The Chiefs' 22–21 loss to the Tennessee Titans also served as Johnson's last with the team after 13 seasons.
"When you're at home and in the playoffs, up 21-3, you book it. I don't care if it's the end of the second or third quarter. I don't care what it is. You figured out how to win the game; unfortunately, we didn't. Some things happened in that game, where, if they go our way, we probably win," said Johnson, "I'm always reminded by Chiefs fans when I see them play. 'Man, that Mariota hit.' That Titans game in 2017 was tough. It was obviously a bad call. They look at it now and, like, there's no way you call that. I think they called it forward progress. I mean, it was a hit-and-out. I had a really good game, my last game as a Chief, and, man, I got some really good championship moments. Never won the big one at the Chiefs, but was there for 13 years. So I learned a lot and was blessed a lot."
Super DJ Saves Field Day, an inspiring story about a dad-turned-superhero who flies in and helps kids overcome challenges and find their own super powers, will be released under Black Rose Writing.

Kansas City Chiefs stars are predicted to have their jersey numbers retired down the road

The Kansas City Chiefs have enjoyed significant success with two iconic offensive players on their roster. The legendary careers of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have already had writers and critics looking ahead to their eventual jersey retirements. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin recently published an article predicting that NFL jersey numbers are on track to be retired, with Kelce and Mahomes at the forefront. "Mahomes is entering his eighth season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback in 2025, but he's accomplished more in seven years than most signal-callers dream of achieving." wrote Benjamin, "A three-time Super Bowl champion and the face of an ongoing dynasty, his only issue is that the Chiefs have already retired 10 numbers, prompting owner Clark Hunt to forecast an even stricter policy for the practice." Mahomes and Kelce have three Super Bowl titles and are often tied together in terms of legacy. The article reinforces that notion, with Kelce's No. 87 destined to join No. 15 for retirement. "If the Chiefs honor the man who threw the passes for their dynasty, they'll almost surely do the same for the man who caught so many of them," wrote Benjamin, "Like Mahomes, Kelce is one of, if not the, best of his time." As the two stars enter another training camp ahead of the new season, they will focus on expanding their impressive career resumes.

Will the Chiefs actually regress in 2025?

Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and senior NFL writer Frank Schwab discuss how the defending AFC champions could take a step back this season. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Give me a Super Bowl caliber team that you're boom or bust on. Oh, I'm gonna do this again. I, and I, it's so dumb when I do it, and I do it all the time, but, uh, I'm not a very smart man. I don't learn from my mistakes. The Kansas City Chiefs are gonna regress, right? Like, let's think about last year. We all remember they were winning every close game. They caught every break any team could possibly catch. They set an NFL record with consecutive wins in one score games. Uh, I don't think they, I don't want to sit here and say they were exposed in the Super Bowl. They played a really good team and just had a bad day, and I, I don't think that that was indicative of who the Chiefs are. But all of a sudden now, Rashee Rice, his suspension might be back on the table, and Travis Kelce is getting older. Chris Jones is getting older, as great as he's been. Throughout this Chiefs' run, uh, I think 9 straight division titles, how often has there been a good second team in the AFC West? And the answer is pretty rarely. I think there's two now. We can debate whether you like the Broncos or Chargers more to compete with the Chiefs in this division. Maybe the answer is both. I like the Chargers. Others prefer the Broncos, but I think you're going to get, again, these two teams did make the playoffs last year. I think you're gonna get both of those teams kind of nipping at the Chiefs' heels this year. I think we're gonna look up in December and say, wow, the Chiefs could be a wild card team this year because the Broncos and Chargers are right there with them. I, I feel like the Chargers are a 10-win team and the Broncos are a 10-win team, and the Chiefs are a 13-win team. I can get the Chiefs down to like 12 and 5, and maybe that will feel like tremendous regression, but I don't know, man. Like I just, I have a hard time betting against them. I, I just think that, again, the bust for the Chiefs is you, you, you are a wild card team and maybe, you know, you go on the road, Buffalo week one or Ravens week wild card weekend, and you lose. That's a bust for them. Uh, I think if some of these breaks don't go their way, all of a sudden we're looking and saying, oh wow, they they have to go on the road week one. This is the first time ever for the Chiefs as a wildcard in the playoffs here. I think that's on the table. Close
