Artist covers sculpture in plastics as sign for delegates at pollution summit

Delegates to the treaty talks pass by the sculpture daily in a reminder of their responsibility to solve the plastic pollution crisis. The talks are scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
Benjamin Von Wong, a Canadian artist and activist, designed the nearly six-metre tall sculpture called the Thinker's Burden and built it with a team.
It is his take on the famous sculpture by Auguste Rodin, The Thinker in Paris. There is a male figure in deep thought, like Rodin depicted.

But instead of sitting atop a rock, Mr Von Wong's figure sits atop Mother Earth while cradling a baby and clutching plastic bottles. A strand of DNA intertwines them to highlight the health impacts of plastic pollution.
With the help of volunteers, Von Wong is adding plastic waste to the installation over the course of the negotiations to reflect the growing cost of inaction.
He climbed a ladder on Monday to reach the top of the sculpture and weave plastic bottles through the DNA. He put a plastic toy car in front.
'By the end of this week, we should have a sculpture almost completely drowned in plastics, however, the hope is, a strong and ambitious plastics treaty means that we can solve this problem once and for all,' he said.
About 3,700 people are taking part in the talks, representing 184 countries and more than 600 organisations. They are aiming to craft the first global, legally binding treaty on plastics pollution.

But a few days earlier, the pair shared a video on their YouTube channel that would serve as their haunting swansong. Titled "VANCOUVER ISLAND | The Off-Road Version", the hour-long video shows them putting Toyota trucks through an "ultimate test" in the rough terrain. The video shows them camping out in the stunning Canadian scenery while testing their trucks on the rocky trail. Heartbroken fans in the comments section have paid tribute to the influencer couple. One user said: "I'm in absolute shock hearing that these two beautiful souls are no longer with us. "My condolences to not only their family and friends, but also viewers that appreciated them, their projects, and their adventures." Another commented: "We wished this episode would have lasted forever, as it meant we'd never have to truly say goodbye. "We didn't get the chance to meet you, but you gave more inspiration than you knew. "Hope you're on an amazing trail leading to an even better campsite. Rest easy to the coolest people we never met." Popular influencer couple killed in horror off-road crash in 'the beautiful mountains they loved so much' in Canada News of the couple's passing was shared on social media by friends and family - and was also confirmed by Kaslo Search and Rescue. Kaslo SAR manager Mark Jennings-Bates said rescuers were called to an off-road motor vehicle incident around 7:30pm local time on August 7. He said: "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long ways north in the valley up towards [...] the village of Trout Lake. "Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. "It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. "And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them." He added that one occupant of the vehicle was dead when they arrived at the scene, while the other later passed away in hospital. The precise cause of the crash remains unknown, but the working theory is that the vehicle lost control on rough terrain. Tourout's mother Colleen paid tribute in a heartwrenching Facebook post. She wrote: "With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both tragically succumbing to injuries in an offroad accident on Aug 7, 2025 in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much. "Please keep us and them in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating end to an amazing Love Story. "They are together forever as we knew they would always be." 7 Tourout's mother Colleen paid tribute in a heartwrenching Facebook post 7 The precise cause of the crash remains unknown Credit: YouTube

Rap icon cancels gig one hour before performance after 'unforeseen illness'

A fan favourite rapper was supposed to tear up the Budweiser Stage in Toronto on August 11. Instead, fans were left staring at a screen announcing the show was postponed due to an 'unforeseen illness.' Lil Wayne was scheduled to perform for his Canadian fans as part of his Tha Carter VI Tour, which kicked off in June and is set to run until October. No one saw it coming – the venue had already filled up, and the announcement dropped at 8 pm, a whole hour after the show was meant to start. The screen lit up with a message saying Weezy was too sick to perform, but he 'loves putting on nothing short of the best performances.' It promised that all tickets would still be valid for the rescheduled date, but as of now, that date is a mystery. There's been no official follow-up or apology from the 42-year-old's team, but fans online were clearly disappointed. One fan, @fridayrickdred, took to X to say: 'Lil Wayne cancels Toronto concert last min! We gotta talk about Wayne possibly destroying his legacy. He might be inching towards COOKED status! Or is he already there?' 'You still the best rapper ever though but you broke my heart tn,' @lefthooklili added. Tha Carter VI Tour is set to cover over 30 cities across North America. That includes stops in New York, Detroit, Vegas, and more – and yes, Toronto was one of the more hyped ones as it was his first show back in Canada since 2023. Wayne is touring off the back of his new album, Tha Carter VI, which dropped on June 6 and features an insane mix of guests – Bono, Andrea Bocelli, Big Sean, Jelly Roll, and even his own sons. The album marks his 14th studio release, and for a rapper with over two decades in the game, he's still pushing his sound. The song Island Holiday even samples Weezer's Island in the Sun, bringing in a whole different vibe. Another standout is Bells, a track that flips LL Cool J's Rock the Bells – and yes, LL joined Wayne on stage at the Madison Square Garden tour opener to perform it live. The performance was a big deal for the rapper, as it was Wayne's first time headlining the iconic venue. The next scheduled show is in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on August 16 – and as of now, it's still on. More Trending Meanwhile, Wayne's got more going on than just the tour. He's headlining the 2025 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Vegas this September alongside Maroon 5, LL Cool J, and Bryan Adams – a pretty wild lineup. He's also popping up on other people's tracks – like Chance the Rapper's new single Tree, which dropped last week and features a solid Wayne verse. Wayne may be nearly 20 years removed from Tha Carter II, but he's proving he's still a major player in 2025.. Got a story? Experts issue warning to Brit parents over the Labubu toys & the simple trick to check you haven't bought a ‘dodgy doll'

But now Brit parents have been issued an urgent warning over the viral Labubu toys. With their devilish toothy grins and wide eyes, Labubus have captured the heart of the internet and have sparked a frenzy, with mile-long queues lining up to get their hands on the toys. A single doll can set you back anywhere from £13.50 to £211 depending on the rarity of the design. But dodgy dealers looking to make a quick buck are using underhand tactics to profit off shoppers - and experts have warned the dodgy dolls pose a serious risk. The ''dangerous counterfeits'' could pose a choking hazard for children, Hull City Council's Trading Standards team told Mail Online. Rogue traders are cashing in on their popularity by selling poor-quality versions with small parts that can easily detach. Hundred have been seized, but it is feared there could be many more still on sale across the nation. However, there are also easy ways to check if you have purchased a fake Labubu. The dodgy dolls tend to have matt packaging rather than glossy and more or less than the nine gnashers the original Labubus have. A different shape or size of the mouth can also be an indicator you've bought a dangerous counterfeit. Dramatic moment crowds join massive queue to grab viral Labubu dolls as latest doll craze sweeps across the world The quality of a fake Labubu will also be of poorer standard, like wobbly limbs and odd colours. To really know if you've got the real deal, buyers of newer editions will find a UV-detectable seal on the right foot. Under UV light, shoppers should see a silhouette of the specific Labubu model. It's understood more than 100,000 counterfeit dolls have already been seized by UK Border Force, arriving in the country in fast parcels or via air cargo. What are Labubu and why are they so popular? LABUBU is a brand of plushies designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung and loved by celebrities like Olivia Attwood, Dua Lipa and Rihanna. The brand made its debut in 2015, but skyrocketed in global popularity after hitting Pop Mart shelves in 2019. Pop Mart is a Chinese toy retailer, known for its collectible designer models that are often sold in a blind box format, meaning you don't know what you've got until you've opened it. After mammoth success overseas, the Labubu craze has now made its way to the UK. The first three months of 2025 were wildly successful for the brand, with Brits searching high and low to nab one of the quirky figurines. Since opening stores in London and Manchester over the last 12 months, Labubu dolls have become cult collectibles among grown British women. Labubus come in an array of vibrant colours, unique shapes and various sizes, spanning from plush toys to striking vinyl figures. They come as little toys you can hook on your handbag, as well as mega-sized figures and quirky home decorations. The "monster elves" are sold in blind boxes, meaning consumers can't see their new doll until it is unwrapped. This clever marketing tactic designed to build suspense has been deliberately exploited by counterfeiters who are packing the boxes with cheap dupes. The fake dolls are known as Lafufus and they are flooding the global market - selling for as little as £2.99. Councils have warned that children in Scotland and Wales have fallen ill following exposure to the dolls. Helen Barnham, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the Intellectual Property Office, told The Sun: "We're seeing criminals increasingly exploit viral toy trends, with counterfeit versions of popular products appearing within days of them going viral. "These counterfeit toys are unlikely to have undergone the rigorous safety testing required for genuine products and can pose serious safety risks. "Children's safety must always come first, and we encourage parents to always research products thoroughly and only purchase from trusted sources."
