PM Sharif hopes Tehran punishes culprits who killed 8 Pakistanis in Iran

Arab News15-04-2025

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday condemned the recent killing of eight Pakistani nationals in Iran, hoping Tehran would arrest the culprits and hand them stern punishments.
The Pakistani nationals were killed in the Mehrestan County of Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province, which borders Pakistan, on Saturday. The attack was claimed by the Balochistan National Army (BNA), one of several separatist outfits operating in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province.
Militant groups operate in the area that includes Pakistan's Balochistan and Iran's southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province. Both countries trade blame for militancy in the regions that are restive, mineral-rich and largely underdeveloped.
'The foreign minister [of Pakistan] has spoken to the foreign minister of Iran and I have also issued a statement,' Sharif told members of his cabinet during a meeting.
'We should hope that the Irani government will immediately arrest and hand stern punishments to the killers,' he added.
The Pakistani prime minister condemned the attack in strong words.
As per media reports, the Pakistani nationals who were killed in the attack were auto mechanics. Thousands of Pakistanis, mostly from underprivileged backgrounds, regularly cross into Iran for informal work in industries such as auto repair, agriculture and construction.
Balochistan has witnessed a low-level insurgency for nearly two decades. Baloch militant groups such as the BNA accuse the central government of exploiting local resources while neglecting the population.
Islamabad denies the allegations and says it is committed to regional development.

Pakistan Supports Iran, Urges Muslim World to Unite, Defy Israel

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said that his country stood resolutely in solidarity with Iran against Israel's unjustified aggression, according to Pakistani media. — PTV News (@PTVNewsOfficial) June 14, 2025 Shehbaz strongly condemned Israeli strikes on Tehran that targeted nuclear facilities and killed top commanders and nuclear scientists and experts on Friday. During a phone call with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, Shehbaz stated that Israel's attacks violated Tehran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Therefore, Iran has the right of self-defense, as provided under Article 51 of the UN Charter. A Call for Unity Meanwhile, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has also denounced the Israeli aggression against Iran, urging the Islamic world to unite against the Israeli occupation state. 'We stand by Iran in every way. We will protect Iranian interests. Iranians are our brothers, and their grief and pain are shared,' Asif said on Saturday addressing the National Assembly following the Israeli strikes on Iran. Asif added that Israel is targeting not just Iran, but also Yemen and Palestine. Consequently, unity has become crucial in the Muslim world. 'If we remain silent and disunited today, then everyone will be targeted eventually,' Asif said. In the light of this, he stressed that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should hold a meeting to agree on a unified strategy to defy Israel's aggression. Israeli Strikes on Iran On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. Pakistan confirms OIC participation as PM Sharif, Türkiye's Erdogan discuss Iran crisis

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday assured Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of his country's participation in the upcoming Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting in Istanbul, as both leaders expressed deep concern over Israel's recent attack on Iran and pledged to coordinate peace efforts. The telephone call came as the OIC's Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) prepares to convene in Türkiye on June 21–22 at a volatile moment for the bloc, with two of its member states — Pakistan and Iran — having faced military standoffs with their regional rivals. While Pakistan's border exchange with India lasted four days before a US-brokered ceasefire was reached last month, Iran remains in a state of heightened uncertainty following Israel's strike on its military and nuclear facilities on Friday, as the war shows no signs of easing. 'Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye, this evening,' Sharif's office said in a statement after the call. 'During their most warm and cordial conversation, both leaders discussed the deeply worrying situation in the region in the wake of Israel's unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Iran.' 'The Prime Minister said that Pakistan would continue to play a constructive role for peace, both as member of the UN Security Council, as well as in other forums such as the OIC,' the statement added. 'In this regard, the Prime Minister said that Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar would represent Pakistan at the upcoming OIC CFM meeting in Istanbul.' Both leaders condemned Israel's strikes, saying they violated Iran's sovereignty and defied international law. They also voiced solidarity with Palestine amid what they described as Israel's 'brazen military aggression,' which they said had continued 'with complete impunity.' The two leaders emphasized the international community and the United Nations must act collectively and urge Israel to immediately end its 'aggressive posturing and illegal actions' against Iran, Palestine and other countries in the region.
