Yahoo3 days ago
The Carolina Panthers started up their 2025 preseason by hosting the Cleveland Browns on Friday night. But unfortunately, the opener resulted in a 30-10 loss for the home squad.
Here are the top highlights from the defeat from this summer's first exhibition outing . . .
Ryan Fitzgerald breaks the Cleveland run - Browns 30, Panthers 10
Rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald booted through his first field goal try of the preseason, a 32-yarder late in the fourth. The Browns lead by 20 points with 1:57 left.
Browns score their 30th unanswered point - Browns 30, Panthers 7
With just over six minutes left, Browns quarterback Tyler Huntley hit receiver Cade McDonald for a 6-yard touchdown pass.
Short FG adds to deficit - Browns 24, Panthers 7
Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins capped off a nine-play drive with a 23-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Cleveland takes a 17-point lead with 13:01 remaining in the game.
Andy Dalton INT leads to third Browns TD - Browns 21, Panthers 7
Veteran Andy Dalton was picked off by Browns cornerback Nik Needham at the 7:44 mark of the third quarter. Cleveland turned the takeaway into a touchdown, as wideout Gage Larvadain scored on a 4-yard run.
Demani Richardson notches a sack
Second-year safety Demani Richardson put an end to Cleveland's first drive of the second half, sacking Sanders for a loss of five yards on a third-and-7. The Panthers, still down 14-7, got the ball back with just under 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Shedeur Sanders hits the end zone again - Browns 14, Panthers 7
Sanders led the Browns to another score just before the half. He found wideout Kaden Davis in the end zone for a second time, on a 12-yard strike at the 1:04 mark of the second quarter.
Browns take advantage of rookie mistake - Panthers 7, Browns 7
Panthers rookie running back Trevor Etienne muffed his first punt return of the preseason. Cleveland recovered at Carolina's 10-yard line and proceeded to tie the game up six seconds into the second quarter after a 7-yard touchdown pass from Sanders to wide receiver Kaden Davis.
Bryce Young finds Jalen Coker for a TD - Panthers 7, Browns 0
A nine-play, 73-yard drive by the Panthers ends on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Young to second-year wide receiver Jalen Coker. Carolina leads 7-0 at the 3:36 mark of the first quarter.
Tetairoa McMillan makes his first catch
McMillan, the eighth overall pick of the 2025 draft, is on the board. Young connected with the rookie wide receiver for a beautiful 29-yard gain to start Carolina's second drive.
Bryce Young, Panthers also go three-and-out
Young and the Carolina offense had a rough first possession as well. The third-year quarterback threw an incompletion behind running back Chuba Hubbard on second-and-5 and was then sacked by defensive ends Alex Wright and Sam Kamara for a loss of two yards on third down.
Panthers defense forces three-and-out on Shedeur Sanders, Browns
The first drive of Sanders' highly-anticipated NFL debut did not last long, as the bulk of Carolina's first-team defense forced a three-and-out. Sanders completed one of his two passes for four yards.

Evoaldi's impressive streak for Rangers ends by giving up 3 homers and 5 runs

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi's impressive streak for the Texas Rangers ended with a dud. After going 6-0 with a 0.47 ERA in six starts since the start of July, Eovaldi was tagged for three home runs while allowing season highs of five runs and eight hits in five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The 35-year-old right-hander struck out three and walked one before exiting with Texas down 5-1. Eovaldi had given up only six runs total over his previous seven starts, and half of those runs came in the same game. There had only been two long balls against him his past 14 games. When he pitched one-hit ball over eight innings in a 2-0 win over the New York Yankees last Tuesday, it was the 13th time in a 14-game span allowing one or zero runs. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson is the only pitcher since 1900 to record that kind of streak, according to STATS, and he did it in 1968, the season he won both the NL Cy Young and MVP awards. Even though Evoladi's overall ERA rose from 1.38 to 1.71, that is still better than the 1.94 of qualified MLB leader Paul Skenes. The AL leader is reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal at 2.35. Eovaldi, who missed most of June with elbow inflammation, has thrown 116 innings in the Rangers' 120 games. Pitchers need one inning per team game to qualify as a league leader. Arizona's first five batters were retired before rookie first baseman Tyler Locklear homered on a 402-foot shot to left field in the second inning. Jake McCarthy opened the third with a double and Corbin Carrol followed with his 26th homer, a shot that ricocheted off the right-field pole. Ketel Marte was then hit by a pitch on his left elbow before Geraldo Perdomomo's 12th homer made it 5-0. Eovaldi benefitted from double plays in both the fourth and fifth to avoid giving up any more runs after Arizona also had hits in both those innings. The Diamondbacks were coming off a 17-hit game in their 13-6 win at home over Colorado on Sunday, when they set a franchise record with nine consecutive hits in the fifth inning — all with two outs. Only four MLB pitchers since 1920 had a lower ERA than the 1.38 for Eovaldi in the first 19 starts of a season, with Gibson's 1.06 for St. Louis in 1968 the lowest. This is Eovaldi's third season with the Rangers, who gave him the $100,000 All-Star bonus that is in his contract even though he was left off the American League All-Star team last month. ___ AP MLB:

Schwarber hits his 42nd homer as Phillies rally past Reds

CINCINNATI — Kyle Schwarber hit his 42nd homer of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning, as the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games. Schwarber's 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle's Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season. Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally. Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Against the Phillies, he retired the first 12 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto doubled leading off the fifth. The Reds went ahead 1-0 when TJ Friedl doubled and scored on Gavin Lux's single in the first. It was the only run allowed by Phillies starter Taijuan Walker in his six innings. Orion Kerkering retired the Reds in order in the ninth for his third save in seven chances. Jordan Romano (2-4) earned the victory for Philadelphia, which moved six games ahead of the idle New York Mets in the division. Key moment With one out in the seventh, Reds right fielder Noelvi Marte prevented the tying run from scoring when he threw out Bryce Harper attempting to score from third on Nick Castellano's fly ball. Key stat Schwarber, who was born in nearby Middletown, Ohio, has 13 career home runs at Great American Ball Park, the most of any road ballpark. Up next Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (8-5, 2.94 ERA) will face Reds RHP Brady Singer (9-9, 5.43 ERA) on Tuesday.

Star Pitt running back giving back to kids in need through books

Once a week you can find Pitt star running back Desmond Reid sitting in the circle time center at the Children's Home of Pittsburgh, turning the page of a children's book, showing off the pictures, surrounded by smiles. It all started back in April on the team's day of service. The Panthers' running backs room visited Child's Way, a part of the Children's Home that provides daycare for medically fragile children. 'Des really took the time to connect one-on-one with the kids,' said Children's Home Events Manager Kelsey Myers. 'I just saw the smiles on their faces, how happy they were when they saw us,' Reid said. 'You know, that really, that's what really that's what really made me want to come back.' Reid was so moved by the interactions he had that day, he knew he wanted to make a greater impact. Days later, Reid Aloud was born. 'They're going through problems, going through hard times, and I'm trying to be the one that helps them put smiles on their face,' Reid said. 'I want to make sure they think that everything is gonna be okay.' 'They get so excited,' Myers said. 'It's like a brand new friend for them.' Along with story time and, of course, playtime during his weekly visits, Reid started an Amazon Wishlist with the hope of filling up the bookcases and book carts all across the Children's Home. 'Having an athlete like that who's excelling in their career at such a young age take the time out of their busy life to come and spend time with the kids in Child's Way, and really give that one-on-one attention and play with the kids, it means so much,' Myers said. While he has his sights set on an ACC Championship and record-breaking season, the running back tells me his biggest goal is simply to be a role model. 'You're not gonna be playing football your whole life,' Reid said. 'So, you know after football, or, however long that goes, you know, I want to give back to those kids.'
