The week in charts: GDP projections, Centre's financial discrepancy
Growth downgrade
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released its latest estimates for India's GDP projection, lowering the growth forecast for 2025-26 to 6.5% from its earlier estimate of 6.7% given in April. The downward revision reflects the negative impact of US tariff policies and a weakened demand and investment climate. India Ratings and Research has lowered its projections even lower to 6.3%, cutting 30 basis points from an earlier estimate. With this, GDP growth is estimated to be 6.2-6.5% in 2025-26 by all major agencies.
Export dependency
India exported electronic goods worth $40.9 billion in 2024-25, but imported $102.6 billion, making it a net importer by a huge margin. AMintanalysis of trade data shows that electronics exports are highly concentrated, with the US accounting for 37.3% of total exports, dramatically up from about 14% in 2010-11. Other top destinations include the UAE, Netherlands, UK, and Italy, but their shares remain modest at 4.8-9% in 2024-25, showing little growth over the past 15 years despite India's export push.
Fiscal conundrum
₹21.3 trillion: That is the unrealized tax revenue for 2022-23, marking an increase of ₹5.47 trillion from the previous year,Mintreported, quoting the latest CAG report presented in Parliament. The audit report highlights gaps in transparency and data consistency regarding compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act. The report noted that there was a discrepancy of ₹18,000 crore in the fiscal deficit figure between Union government finance accounts (UGFA) for 2022-23 and the budget at a glance (BAG) for 2024-25.
Sudden resignation
In the midst of the ongoing monsoon session, vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation to the President, citing health reasons, cutting short his term scheduled to end in August 2027. He was the 14th sitting vice president of India and also served as the chairman of the upper house of Parliament. With the sudden resignation, Dhankhar has become one of three vice presidents to quit mid-term. With a tenure of two years and 344 days, his presidency is also the third shortest in the history of independent India.
Investor sell-off
After three months of fund inflow, foreign investors turned net sellers for most of July due to US-India trade tensions and mixed corporate financial results, PTI reported. According to the latest NSDL data, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled out ₹4,508 crore from equities this month (until 24 July). This follows net inflow of ₹14,590 crore in June, ₹19,860 crore in May, and ₹4,223 crore in April. Earlier, FPIs withdrew ₹3,973 crore in March, ₹34,574 crore in February, and ₹78,027 crore in January.
Domestic driven
₹60,681 crore: That is the forex savings from nearly 8% year-on-year decline in coal imports during 2024-25, the coal ministry said this week. India imported 243.62 million tonnes of coal in 2024-25, down from 264.53 million tonnes in 2023-24, which resulted in a reduction in forex savings, coal and mines minister G. Kishan Reddy said. This decline in imports comes amid rising domestic coal production, which increased 5% to 1.05 billion tonnes in 2024-25.
Cost advantage
Indian companies overcame persistent weakness in demand as profits surged at the fastest pace in at least five quarters during the June quarter, driven by falling raw material costs, showed a Mint analysis. Among 182 companies that declared their first quarter results of 2025-26, aggregate revenue rose 5.4% year-on-year, but net profits jumped 23% as raw material costs declined 14% over the year—the steepest drop in eight quarters. Excluding BFSI companies, net profits soared nearly 40% from the previous year.
Chart of the week: Digital revolution
Mobile phones have emerged as the growing investment tool for retail investors, accounting for over a quarter of all monthly transactions since April 2024, according to BSE data. This represents a dramatic surge from just 5% in June 2019 and 10% in June 2020, with mobile trading peaking at nearly 29% in May 2025.

Maldivian President Muizzu affirms enduring strength of India-Maldives ties at state banquet
Male/New Delhi, July 25 (UNI) Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu today affirmed the enduring strength of Maldives-India relations, stating that the historic bond between both nations cannot be weakened. He made the remakes at a state banquet hosted by himself and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed in honour of Indian Prime Minister Modi, who is on a two-day state visit to the Maldives at the President's invitation. In his speech, the President said that while this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of official diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India, the relationship dates back centuries. While history bears witness to this, he noted that both countries have deep-rooted ties through trade and other cultural activities since long before official diplomatic relations were established. The President emphasised that India has always been an important partner in the Maldives' development journey, and noted that the relationship is strengthening, particularly in the fields of security, health, trade and education. He expressed confidence that India can play an important role in building a sustainable, inclusive and youth-driven economy in the Maldives. In his speech, the President also acknowledged Prime Minister Modi as the second longest-serving Prime Minister in India's history, describing it as a reflection of his dedication to national service. The banquet was attended by members of the visiting Indian delegation and senior officials of the Government of the Maldives. Earlier, during the joint press statement following their delegation level talks, President Muizzu underscored India's central role in the Maldives' development. Eight memoranda of understanding were signed during the official meetings, reflecting mutual commitment to broad collaboration across key sectors, including infrastructure, defence, education, health care, and economic development. Among the agreements, a USD 565 million line of credit was announced, an initiative President Muizzu described as essential for advancing critical national priorities. Targeted areas include sports, public housing, health services, education, and military infrastructure. India also offered a currency swap facility intended to help the Maldives navigate prevailing economic challenges. Discussions also reflected the durability of bilateral relations, as President Muizzu commended India's longstanding assistance, including its timely response during disasters and emergencies, which reinforced the partnership's humanitarian and strategic significance. Developmental projects featured prominently in the discussions, with President Muizzu highlighting the India-assisted Malé-Thilafushi bridge as a cornerstone of cooperative infrastructure and a forthcoming symbol of shared progress. Other initiatives noted included the construction of 3,300 housing units, extensive roadworks in Addu City, and the provision of 72 heavy vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). Prime Minister Modi's state visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. UNI RN

State revenue dept tells Pune district administration to upload land allotment data
1 2 Pune: The state revenue department has directed the district administration to upload comprehensive records of govt land allotted to educational institutions and private entities as part of a transparency drive. In a letter dated July 21, the department instructed both Pune and Solapur districts to upload the data on their respective websites by July 23. The matter is slated for review at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing on July 29. While Solapur met the deadline, Pune sought additional time and is expected to upload the data in the coming days, a senior state revenue official told TOI. "Both districts were directed to ensure full disclosure on their websites. We have received Solapur's report, and Pune's is awaited," the official said. "The data will be uploaded shortly as per the requirement," she said. The data of the land bank that has been allotted will soon be up on the department's website, she said. The department's directive follows repeated concerns over land allotted for public purposes being left idle or diverted for other use. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A 2018–19 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report asked the state to make such data publicly accessible for audit and citizen scrutiny. The transparency drive is grounded in a govt resolution (GR) issued on Nov 26, 2012, which directed all district collectors to upload land allotment orders, circulars, and agreements by March 2013. However, compliance across districts has remained patchy, the CAG report stated. As per revenue department records, Mumbai city and Nagpur have uploaded data up to 2018–19, Pune has only done so till 2015, and Nashik, Thane, and Mumbai suburban are yet to upload any information, the letter stated. PAC has consistently emphasised that making land allotment records public is key to ensuring that govt land is used as originally intended. Officials acknowledged multiple instances where land granted for education or social welfare was either left unused or repurposed in violation of allotment terms. Activists have also highlighted the need for regular monitoring and public disclosure. "There have been violations recently, and the district administration has issued notices in several cases, however, no action was taken," said activist S Joshi. In 2023, the district administration identified 102 institutions — educational, charitable, and otherwise —for alleged breaches of lease or occupancy terms tied to govt land. Of these, action was taken against 16 and the remaining was to be carried out. However, due to the elections last year, the administration did not carry out any action. Over the past three decades, Pune district has allotted around 1,000 hectares of govt land on lease or occupancy terms to 1,480 institutions, making oversight and compliance monitoring a key concern.

$565m credit line for Maldives, talks on free trade pact
PM Modi and President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu (Pic credit: AP) The turnaround in India-Maldives ties in the past 10 months - following the acrimonious removal of Indian military personnel from the strategically located country - seemed complete as India announced a fresh $565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Indian Ocean neighbour and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. As President Mohamed Muizzu hosted PM Modi for the latter's first visit to the country under his presidency, receiving Modi at the airport, both sides affirmed their commitment to a bilateral investment pact and a free trade agreement, for which the terms of reference were finalised. Seven MoUs and agreements were signed. Muizzu had invited Modi as the guest of honour for the Maldivian independence day celebrations. India had extended an $800 million LoC in 2019 under the previous pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party govt but on this occasion the LoC is in Indian currency (Rs 4,850 crore). PM: India & Maldives will soon finalise an investment treaty The president said after his meeting with Narendra Modi it will be used for priority projects in defence, healthcare, education and housing. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said Muizzu reiterated the Maldives's condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Muizzu has been seen as a pro-China leader in the past because of his association with the India Out campaign while in the opposition, and his insistence on driving out Indian military from the archipelago after taking over as president in Nov 2023. Muizzu travelled to India in Oct last year for an official visit, during which he said Maldives would do nothing to hurt India's security interests and would prioritise the relationship. The leaders then launched a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership to resuscitate the relationship. Modi said India is proud of the fact that it's Maldives's most reliable partner and that for India, it's always friendship first. "To give a new impetus to our development partnership, we have decided to provide a line of credit of $565 million, or approximately Rs 5,000 crore, to Maldives. It will be used for projects related to infrastructure development in line with the priorities of the people of Maldives," said Modi, calling the relationship older than history and as deep as oceans. One of the agreements signed is expected to bring down Male's annual LoC debt repayment from $51 million to $29 million. Modi said that both countries will soon finalise a bilateral investment treaty and their target now is "from paperwork to prosperity", adding a local currency settlement system under discussion will facilitate trade. There was focus on defence and security cooperation as the new defence ministry building built with Indian assistance was inaugurated. Asked whether there was any discussion about China, Misri said in a press briefing that India continued to work very closely with the Maldives on any issue that might "impinge on not just our security but our common security in this region that we share". Modi will participate in the independence day celebrations on Saturday and meet political functionaries. The visit saw the leaders virtually inaugurating a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six high impact community development projects in other cities.
