Women helping women dress for success
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO)— While Mother's Day was Sunday, a local business is making a large donation of clothing that will help mothers today and in the future.
A truck, filled with clothing, could be found outside of Embe today. The truck was filled with boxes and boxes worth of donated clothing from the Movers for Moms event held by Two Men and a Truck.

'We had people showing up at our office all weekend long and showing up to help sort and bringing more items, so we have even more to deliver after today,' Two Men and a Truck Sioux Falls owner, Angela Drake, said.
The business clothing that was donated will go to Embe's Dress for Success program.
'If they're going for an interview, we'll bring them in. They work one-on-one with a styling coach. They get one interview outfit, a pair of pants, dress shoes, jewelry, maybe a top or two. And then once they secure employment, they can come back and they get up to a week's worth of clothes,' Embe Women's Program Manager, Melissa Webb, said.
The donated clothing is going to benefit more than just Embe.
'Because of this overwhelming response, we did receive some items that won't quite fit for Embe's Dress for Success. So we dug into our pockets and reached out to other nonprofits that we know could benefit from this, like Call to Freedom and Saint Francis House,' Drake said.
Women have been donating clothing for the past few weeks to benefit other women in the years to come.
'There's nothing brighter than women helping other women. We're not only giving them a hand up, but we're also giving them these wonderful items to really steady themselves, entering that new career,' Drake said.
'When we come together as a community, we thrive more, we feel more positive, we're confident, and we can just go out and, you know, do so much more when we're stronger together,' Webb said.
Last year, the Movers for Mom's drive collected 174,000 articles of clothing. This year, they exceeded that number, reaching nearly 200,000 donations.

New report finds Disneyland, Disney World contribute $67B to US economy
New report finds Disneyland, Disney World contribute $67B to US economy Show Caption Hide Caption Disneyland celebrates 70th anniversary with deals, new attractions Customers can access discounted ticket prices and see new shows over the summer at Disneyland. Scripps News Disneyland and Walt Disney World generate nearly $67 billion in annual economic impact and support more than 403,000 U.S. jobs, according to new report commissioned by Disneyland. Disney's domestic parks contribute almost as much to the U.S. economy as consumers spend on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Halloween combined. You don't need to be an economist to know that Disneyland and Walt Disney World bring in a lot of money, but for the first time, Disney is sharing just how much its domestic theme park resorts contribute to the overall U.S. economy. A new report commissioned by Disneyland and prepared by economists at Tourism Economics found that California and Florida resorts generated nearly $67 billion in annual economic impact and supported more than 403,000 direct and indirect jobs across the U.S. Prior to this report, Disney hadn't measured its impacts beyond the parks' local economies. 'To add some color to this number, consider that the two resorts' total combined impact of nearly $67 billion was nearly as much as U.S. consumers spent on Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Halloween combined in 2024,' said Michael Marianna, head economist for Tourism Economics, which is a subsidiary of Oxford Economics, the largest group of private economists worldwide. Disney again? Why fans keep going back to Disney parks The report attributes one in eight Central Florida jobs to Disney and nearly one in 20 jobs in Orange County, California, where Disneyland is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Disney notes it also fuels thousands of small businesses, which provide everything 'from the paint used on Sleeping Beauty Castle to specialty popcorn served in the theme parks.' 'Our destinations create economies far beyond the gates of our parks, and when we invest in the groundbreaking experiences that only Disney can deliver, growth follows,' Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D'Amaro said in a press release. In 2023, Disney pledged to invest $60 billion over the next decade to 'turbocharge' growth across its Experiences segment, which includes domestic and international parks as well as Disney Cruise Line. Half of that money is earmarked for U.S. parks, including Magic Kingdom's largest expansion to date, doubling the size of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, and building new lands and attractions like Disney's first Monster's Inc. land at Disney's Hollywood Studios and new 'Coco' and 'Avatar'-inspired attractions at Disneyland Resort.

City leaders ‘would like to have a prison in Mitchell'
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Project Prison Reset's task force is recommending existing Department of Corrections facilities or the Worthing or Mitchell areas for new men's prison construction. Mitchell city leaders want the group to consider Davison County. City leaders from Mitchell said they've already gathered support when it comes to listing Davison County as a possible location. DOC: Contraband attempt stopped at State Penitentiary 'The chamber and development corporations both passed resolutions separately to bring a prison to Mitchell. The county commission has supported a prison in Mitchell,' Mitchell Chamber and Development CEO Mike Lauritsen said. The Mitchell City Council approved a resolution on Monday that expresses interest in having the facilities built in Davison County, citing the need to meet criminal justice system demands. Lauritsen hopes the city's efforts to inform the public about possible economic opportunities will set them apart from other potential sites. 'This would be huge for our community. That's why we've done all of this work. We want it to go to Mitchell,' Lauritsen said. 'I know there's been struggles in other communities, and I think that's the reason we've made these steps.' The proposed site is a couple miles south of town. Mitchell leaders said the location would have minimal impact on the community but would be close enough to offer rehabilitation resources to inmates. 'If you want to do rehab programs, we've got some of the best programs in the state right there,' Mitchell Area Housing President Terry Sabers told the task force Tuesday. 'Dakota Wesleyan University is there. If you want more advanced programs, they are another three miles away.' They also asked the task force to consider Mitchell's secondary water system. 'Having that secured, our vision plan ten years ago was to have enough water for 130 years plus growth. So, we are really well situated there,' Davison County Commissioner John Claggett said. There were no final decisions made at yesterday's task force meeting, but it did serve as another opportunity for input and consideration. 'We'd like to have a prison in Mitchell,' Lauritsen said. At Mitchell's city council meeting Monday night, some residents expressed concerns about community safety and increased crime if prison facilities are built there. On Wednesday afternoon, the Mitchell Development Corporation announced it will hold three community forums to discuss the proposed site. The organization said in a news release a Mitchell Prison Task Force, made up of city and county officials, community leaders and representatives from the Governor's office will hold the following forums: Tuesday, June 17th, 2025: In-person forum at Mitchell Technical College Auditorium, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18th, 2025: Virtual forum at 7:00 p.m. (Access links will be available on the City and Development Corporation websites) Tuesday, June 24, 2025: Community Debate at Dakota Wesleyan University, 5:30 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Vision Fund Citizen Committee has nominated 14 future projects
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — 14 out of 29 projects have been nominated by Rapid City's Vision Fund Citizen Committee. They have a budget of $12 million and will now await the City Council's decision. 45 citations issued for long vehicles parked downtown The Civic Center, now named The Monument, the BMX Park upgrades, and the South and West Community Gym Centers are just a few of the over 100 projects that have been funded through the Vision Fund. The current Citizens Committee was tasked with allocating just over $12 million, with the 29 applicants requesting more than $74 Million in Vision Fund allocations. 'All of these projects, and I can't stress this enough, all of these projects are sensational. They all would have a significant impact on our community and I wish we could fund them all. I wish the mayor would give me $74 million. We did the absolute best I think we could do,' Citizens Committee Chairman John Kaiser said. This committee was formed around mid-spring and were able to tour and discuss these projects thoroughly. 'Great Vision Fund Committee as well as city staff that provided support and really all of the city staff support altogether. You see a lot of parks projects, a lot of sports projects meeting a lot of needs throughout the city. I think it hits the heart and attention of what we wanted for this and so I'm very pleased,' Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun said. Sports projects were highly requested with over 30% being in that category. 'I think that when you look at sports as a whole, whether it's like the skateboarding, which is something completely unique, or baseball or soccer or whatever, it was just for us as a committee, those were the ones we felt were also in the scope of what citizens should recommend,' Kaiser said. One project request that was not recommended was a new indoor sports complex. That project requested $10 million, as new facilities for athletes are needed in town. This nomination list will now rest in the hands of the Rapid City Council after the Vision Fund Citizens Committee's presentation on Monday night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
