Gio van Bronckhorst to land Liverpool job under Arne Slot as Premier League champions go double dutch
The former Rangers manager is set to replace Johnny Heitinga on the Anfield coaching staff after his departure to Ajax Giovanni van Bronckhorst is set to join Arne Slot's coaching staff at Liverpool. The former Rangers boss is poised to return to the dugout for the first time since leaving Besiktas last year, with the English Premier League champions to add him to Slot's staff as an assistant to his compatriot and fellow Feyenoord coaching alumni. The Reds started the search after Johnny Heitinga left this summer to take the manager's job and former club Ajax. And Slot is set to go Dutch again by bringing van Bronckhorst into the fold. Former Everton man Heitinga proved a popular figure in the Anfield dressing room, working under slot for just over a year. But the chance to take over at his hometown team in Amsterdam was too big to turn down and he was appointed after previous boss Francesco Farioli stepped down following a final day collapse that saw Ajax miss out on the Eredivise title by a point to PSV. Now van Bronckhorst, who was in the Ibrox hotseat for a year before being sacked in November 2022 for slipping too far behind Celtic, is set for a return to football with the Merseyside club. The Dutchman was replaced at Rangers by Steven Gerrard's former assistant and ex-Liverpool academy coach Michael Beale, with many feeling in hindsight that van Bronckhorst was harshly treated by the Gers hierarchy. Van Bronckhorst began his career at Feyenoord before joining the Light Blues in 1998. After three years in Govan, he joined Arsenal before making the move to Barcelona, the finishing his playing career back at Feyenoord. He became the boss at De Kuip in 2015 and led the Rotterdam club to their first Eredivise title for 18 years in 2016. Ex-Rangers boss 'close' to surprise new job with EPL giants
The Dutchman spent just under a year in charge at Ibrox, leading the club he turned out for as a player to the 2022 Europa League final. He will replace his fellow countryman John Heitinga, who recently left Anfield to take on the role of head coach at Eredivisie outfit Ajax. Van Bronckhorst spent a brief spell in charge of Besiktas after leaving Rangers before taking up a role on UEFA's Executive Committee. He now appears set to move to Liverpool as the club looks to build on a title-winning campaign. Speaking in April of this year, Van Bronckhorst was asked whether he'd like to become the permanent manager of Rangers once again: "No," he said live on TNT Sports. "For me, that book is closed. "Maybe as a fan, but no." Rangers recently appointed Russell Martin as the club's new head coach following a change of ownership this summer. He officially got down to business earlier this week ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst set to join Liverpool's backroom staff
Liverpool are close to appointing the former Netherlands international Giovanni van Bronckhorst to their backroom staff. Van Bronckhorst will replace John Heitinga, who left the Premier League champions to become head coach at Ajax, and take his place in Arne Slot's new-look think tank. The 50-year-old has had recent spells as a manager at Rangers, guiding them to the Europa League final in 2022 where they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt, and then Besiktas before his dismissal in November. Van Bronckhorst began his managerial career at Feyenoord, Slot's former club, and won the Eredivisie title in 2017. That was a success Slot emulated in 2023. He will form part of the backroom team alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Aaron Briggs as Liverpool look to defend their title success next season. Liverpool's triumph owed much to the detailed level of coaching that Slot and his staff oversaw, eliciting improvement from established stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk as well as players such as Ryan Gravenberch. Heitinga acted as a 'coaching mentor' to Gravenberch, with the player crediting him with helping him take a step forward in his career. The way Slot works means that Van Bronckhorst will also take on similar responsibilities. As well as a coaching background, Van Bronckhorst brings with him a wealth of experience from a storied playing career which began at Feyenoord before spells at Barcelona and Arsenal among other clubs. Meanwhile, Liverpool are continuing talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Florian Wirtz and also Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez. Heitinga wants to take goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who made his Liverpool debut against Crystal Palace in a league game last season, to Ajax on loan.
