Perak govt proposes tahfiz centres be reclassified under lower water tariff code
State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the power to amend or set water service tariffs lies with the relevant minister, based on recommendations made by SPAN.
'According to the implementation of the water supply rate adjustment under the Water Services Industry (Rates for Water Supply Services) (State of Perak) (Amendment) Regulations 2024, Second Schedule (Regulation 3), regarding Usage Type, tahfiz centres are now uniformly categorised across Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan under the 'School' category with Non-Domestic Usage Type, subject to tariff code 21.
'The state government takes note of the proposal to reclassify water tariff for tahfiz centres and is ready to forward it to SPAN for consideration,' he said during the winding up session on the Royal Address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
On April 18, Selama assemblyman Mohd Akmal Kamarudin urged the state government to hold engagement sessions with tahfiz school administrators statewide following the water tariff code revision by the Perak Water Board which has affected these institutions.
He said the change from tariff code 41, which covered houses of worship and charitable institutions, to code 21, a non-domestic category, has placed a financial burden on tahfiz management.
The change in tariff code has allegedly resulted in a monthly water bill increase of between RM500 and RM1,000.

The five-day event gathered Asean members, observers, IAEA representatives, and dialogue partners. Fadillah also said Malaysia was committed to the Southeast Asia nuclear weapon-free zone treaty and urged nuclear-armed states to sign and ratify the protocol without delay. Separately, Fadillah launched the Gamma Spectrum Water Monitoring Station. The station will be installed in the country's waters for proactive radiation detection and rapid response to potential radiological threats, safeguarding communities and future generations.

Penang aims for RM156 bln GDP by 2030 with digital economy plan
GEORGE TOWN: Penang aims to boost its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from RM116 billion in 2023 to RM156 billion by 2030 under the newly launched Digital Economy Master Plan (DEMP) 2025-2030. State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the plan targets raising the digital economy's contribution to 35 per cent of Penang's GDP by 2030. The state also aims to attract RM20 billion in digital investments, including in integrated circuit design, and RM130 billion in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Zairil added that the plan includes socio-economic goals such as increasing median household income by 17 per cent to RM7,700 by 2030. It also seeks to create 50,000 new digital jobs and upskill 30 per cent of the workforce. 'The Penang DEMP 2025-2030 is not just a document, it is a blueprint for action, a call to build a connected, competitive and inclusive digital Penang,' he said. The plan aims to transform civil service delivery, increase digital-ready businesses, and position Penang as a hub for emerging technologies. Other targets include reducing energy intensity by 25 per cent and increasing renewable energy usage to 10 per cent by 2030. Zairil noted that the DEMP is structured around four strategic pillars: Digital Government, Digital Economy, Digital Society, and Digital Foundation. These pillars are supported by 16 initiatives to ensure Penang achieves its vision and strategic goals. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the DEMP serves as a long-term roadmap to position Penang as a digital-first economy.
