Penang aims for RM156 bln GDP by 2030 with digital economy plan

The Sun12 hours ago
GEORGE TOWN: Penang aims to boost its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from RM116 billion in 2023 to RM156 billion by 2030 under the newly launched Digital Economy Master Plan (DEMP) 2025-2030.
State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the plan targets raising the digital economy's contribution to 35 per cent of Penang's GDP by 2030.
The state also aims to attract RM20 billion in digital investments, including in integrated circuit design, and RM130 billion in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
Zairil added that the plan includes socio-economic goals such as increasing median household income by 17 per cent to RM7,700 by 2030.
It also seeks to create 50,000 new digital jobs and upskill 30 per cent of the workforce.
'The Penang DEMP 2025-2030 is not just a document, it is a blueprint for action, a call to build a connected, competitive and inclusive digital Penang,' he said.
The plan aims to transform civil service delivery, increase digital-ready businesses, and position Penang as a hub for emerging technologies.
Other targets include reducing energy intensity by 25 per cent and increasing renewable energy usage to 10 per cent by 2030.
Zairil noted that the DEMP is structured around four strategic pillars: Digital Government, Digital Economy, Digital Society, and Digital Foundation.
These pillars are supported by 16 initiatives to ensure Penang achieves its vision and strategic goals.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the DEMP serves as a long-term roadmap to position Penang as a digital-first economy.
He emphasised the plan's focus on innovation, infrastructure, talent development, and inclusive digital access.
'The digital economy plays a vital role in our economic resilience, contributing significantly to our services sector, which adds up to 50 per cent of the state's GDP annually,' Chow said.
He added that the plan includes strategies to empower mature workers and senior citizens through accessible digital tools and skilling programmes.
Chow also highlighted the success of the previous Digital Transformation Master Plan (DTMP) 1.0, with over 60 per cent of initiatives completed or ongoing.
The DEMP 2025-2030 represents a commitment to advancing Penang's digital ecosystem through collaboration between state and federal governments, industry players, and technology leaders. - Bernama

Ahmad Zahid: Singapore leaders commend Malaysia's leadership in addressing Thailand-Cambodia crisis

SINGAPURA, Saturday (Aug 9): Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi pays a courtesy call on Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong upon his arrival in Singapore for a two-day working visit and to represent the Malaysian government at Singapore's 2025 National Day Parade. - Photo: Bernama SINGAPORE (Bernama): Singapore's leaders have expressed their appreciation for Malaysia's leadership in efforts to contain the crisis along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said this was conveyed by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong during separate meetings with both leaders on Saturday. "This highlights Malaysia's active role in ensuring regional peace and stability,' he said in a statement on Saturday. Ahmad Zahid is in Singapore for a two-day working visit beginning Saturday and is scheduled to attend the Singapore National Day Parade this evening at the invitation of the Singapore Government. In the separate meetings, he conveyed his warmest congratulations to the Government and people of Singapore on the occasion of their 60th National Day celebrations. Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said his meeting with Wong, who is also Finance Minister, focused on strengthening long-standing bilateral relations, including strategic projects that have the potential to boost foreign direct investment (FDI) and create more job opportunities in Malaysia. "We also discussed new areas of cooperation in tourism, TVET, and strengthening people-to-people ties as the foundation for long-term understanding,' he said. Both leaders also examined ways to share best practices in enhancing laws related to the gig economy, which has become one of the key sectors in both countries. Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia and Singapore are studying the matter from legal and policy perspectives to ensure industry players, especially gig workers, receive appropriate protection and have their welfare safeguarded. "In this context, I also shared Malaysia's initiatives in supporting gig workers through social protection and progressive policies, as part of efforts to build a competitive digital economy,' he said. Ahmad Zahid said that in his discussion with Gan, they agreed on the importance of fully harnessing ASEAN's large market potential to boost bilateral trade. "I also emphasised Malaysia's role as the region's leading halal hub, supported by halal industrial park infrastructure, world-class certification, and close regional trade cooperation,' he said. Gan, who is also Minister for Trade and Industry, informed that Singapore had sent TVET trainers to Malaysia, in line with the shared commitment to strengthen quality and empower the TVET ecosystem. Ahmad Zahid said Saturday's discussions were highly beneficial, full of new ideas and opportunities that could potentially enhance bilateral relations. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the meetings would open a new chapter of closer strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, for the continuity and shared prosperity of the two neighbouring nations. "Hopefully, everything discussed today will be translated into actions that will bring great benefits to the people of both countries in the future,' he said. Ahmad Zahid concluded his engagements with Singapore's top leadership with a luncheon with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. - Bernama

Zara Qairina case: No one to be protected

"Our instructions are clear - no compromise, regardless of whose child it is, whether the child of a minister or anyone else, I don't care." 09 Aug 2025 09:20pm Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah will be investigated transparently without protecting anyone. Photo by Bernama KOTA BHARU - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah will be investigated transparently without protecting anyone. He said the case should not be taken lightly, especially as various allegations have emerged, including that the victim had fallen, been pushed, or bullied. "Our child in Sabah has died; some say she fell, some say she was pushed, some say it was due to bullying. We do not take this lightly, and we do not want it to be turned into political fodder. "Our instructions are clear - no compromise, regardless of whose child it is, whether the child of a minister or anyone else, I don't care,' he said at the Rancakkan Madani Kelantan Programme at USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, here today. The Prime Minister said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the investigation is carried out fairly. "I asked whether there were any mistakes in the investigation into Zara Qairina's case. If there were, take action. This is a death. Regardless of whether it is the child of the poor or the rich, in the mountains, on land or at sea, we will pay attention because the investigation must be conducted transparently. I am saddened because she could have been my child or grandchild. "Due to suspicions, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has ordered the exhumation of the body for a second post-mortem," he said. He said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar has also been instructed to go to Sabah to monitor the investigation to prevent any perception that certain parties are being protected. "This is the Madani government; we will not protect murderers," he added. The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has shocked the nation amid growing outrage over suspected bullying at her school in Papar, Sabah. Today, Zara Qairina's body was exhumed to complete the investigation into the student's death following the AGC's directive yesterday. Yesterday, the AGC, in a statement, said Zara Qairina's remains needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem to be carried out on the student's body. The AGC is of the view that further investigation is necessary for the police to ensure all aspects of the case can be examined thoroughly. Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the hostel of a religious school in Papar at 4am on July 16. - BERNAMA More Like This
