Umpiring standards in IPL under fire
Meanwhile, the umpiring in IPL 2025 hasn't been at its best. The issue of bad umpiring came into the spotlight recently during a strange incident involving Ishan Kishan in the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
SRH batter Kishan tried to glance a ball from pacer Deepak Chahar that was drifting down the leg side. The ball was safely caught by MI wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, but neither Rickelton nor Chahar made any serious appeal for a catch.
On-field umpire Vinod Seshan looked ready to signal it as a wide. But surprisingly, Kishan started walking off, thinking he had edged the ball. Seeing Kishan walk, Seshan also raised his finger and gave him out. He looked absolutely clueless while making the decision.

Ponting Tells Preity Zinta Why He's Not A 'Calm' Coach: 'You Need To Sit Next To Me'
Last Updated: PBKS coach Ricky Ponting tells Preity Zinta why he's not a calm coach, inviting her to sit with him in the dug-out. Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting has denied the misconception that he's calm and composed as a coach in the dugout, saying that he's an aggressive person and can't help it, especially during 'cricket time'. Ponting was answering a question from the franchise's co-owner, actress and entrepreneur Preity Zinta, in a recent podcast. The team shared a clip of it on social media, with the caption, 'Ponting mentality – Train with passion, roar with aggression 💪🔥'. In it, Zinta can be seen asking him: 'How does somebody be so aggressive on the ground and as a person, but be so calm and chilled out?" Ponting offered a hilarious reply, asking Zinta to try and observe him closely in the dugout to understand the reality of how his nature seems from afar. 'You need to come and sit next to me in the dugout sometimes because you will see that it's not always calm. Look, I'm an aggressive-natured person, especially when it's cricket time. I'll have a laugh and a joke and a coffee and a sit down with anyone and talk about anything outside of cricket time. But when it's cricket time, it's my job to bring high performance to this team. And so I'm not gonna waste a minute, I'm not gonna waste a day, I'm not gonna waste a training session where I'm not trying to be the best coach that I can be and make every single player that's playing with me the best player that they can be," Ponting said. This aggression from Ponting matched Shreyas Iyer's at PBKS, with the duo taking the franchise to just its second IPL final in the recent season. They lost convincingly to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, but not before a spirited effort in the group stages, which helped them finish top of the points table, despite having one of the youngest squads. Apart from being credited for being an excellent man-manager throughout, Ponting was also praised for leading PBKS' brilliant auction strategy. Being a team that has otherwise frequently changed captains and coaches, PBKS would want to stick with the duo and aim to go all the way with a bit more experience next year. Madhya Pradesh League a platform where young players get the opportunity to prove themselves, says Rewa Jaguars owner
Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) [India], June 8 (ANI): Rewa Jaguars owner Alok Birla believes the Madhya Pradesh League (MPL) is a powerful platform for aspiring cricketers to showcase their talent at the big stage. The Madhya Pradesh League will begin on June 12 at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Shankarpur, Gwalior. With a vision that extends beyond just participation, Rewa Jaguars owners are focused on creating a franchise that nurtures players both on and off the field. "I want to create a franchise where players are getting benefited both in terms of their livelihood and in terms of their opportunities, because my vision is not only to participate in MPL but at the same time give them personalised coaching and make them mentally and physically fit. So, my thought was always that if players stay with the franchise, then they can grow even more," said Alok Birla, owner of Rewa Jaguars, as quoted by the MPL press release. "In life everybody wants to have an opportunity where they want to showcase their talent or showcase their calibre or showcase their skills. This happens everywhere in life. So, Madhya Pradesh League is something where it's a platform, it's an opportunity, it's a tournament where you can get yourself exposed for the next levels," he added. The owner of Rewa Jaguars cited the example of Shivam Shukla, who hogged the limelight during the last season of the Madhya Pradesh League, and was eventually brought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a replacement for Rovman Powell in IPL 2025 last month. "Like Shivam Shukla is the right answer to this question. Last year, he played in the Madhya Pradesh League, and now he is playing for KKR. So, that's how everybody looks for playing the Madhya Pradesh League," said Alok Birla. "It's a platform given by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association where things are going to be very good for all those young talents who are born and brought up in Madhya Pradesh towards cricket," he added. Even Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had described the Madhya Pradesh League as a launchpad for young players in recent address in Gwalior during the inauguration of the second season of the Madhya Pradesh League. This time there will be a women's league as well for the second season of Madhya Pradesh League. Chambal Ghariyals, Bhopal Wolves and Bundelkhand Bulls are the teams that will compete in the women's league. Speaking about his vision of investing in the women's cricket, Mr Alok Birla said, "As of now I don't have any, you know, thought process of buying any or owning any women's team. But yes, I am very much dedicated to work for girls, which I am doing by promoting two girls in Indore, who are playing in Dev Academy." Organised by Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) under the aegis of MP Cricket Association, the MPL will get underway from June 12.
