PPM's Rolex 24 triumph is internationally monumental

Yahoo26-01-2025

Porsche Penske Motorsport's victory in the 2025 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona Sunday afternoon was lauded as 'something none of us could have dreamed of' by the team's managing director, Jonathan Diuguid.
One of the most dramatic Rolex 24s in years, drama coursed up and down the order in the closing stages affecting the lead battles in every class. The battle for the overall victory was a big part of that and certainly did not disappoint in generating headlines.
The Porsche Penske vs. BMW RLL duel nearing race's end didn't quite go the distance, as the No. 24 M Hybrid V8 bowed out after contact caused the bodywork on the front-left corner of the car to rub with the tire, forcing Dries Vanthoor down after the final restart.
It didn't ease the tension on the Penske pit wall, though, as the pair of factory 963s diced for the lead before Acura MSR's Tom Blomqvist in the No. 60 powered by Matt Campbell for second.
Behind the wheel in the winning Porsche, the final hour was beyond tense for Felipe Nasr, but a lot of respect was shown between the two sides of the garage as he and Matt Campbell battled with 20 minutes remaining.
'From the driver's seat, it's different emotions to everyone else,' Nasr said. 'All I was thinking of was that I wanted to win this race for the team. I was third at the restart, and it's hard to know how it'll end up, but I knew the car was capable and I knew the team behind this is great.
'There was always going to be drama with one trophy and two cars. I felt like I had the pace to go forward, though, and that's what I did. We all get the same opportunity; I didn't want to create any trouble so I tried a clean pass and I knew I had to move forward because the Acura was close. I had to go for it.'
The Brazillian's performance on new tires to fight past the sister car at the end was masterful. Not only did it help capture back-to-back wins for himself, Porsche and Penske, but it also completed a remarkable 'Grand Slam' of endurance wins for Nick Tandy, who has now won the Le Mans 24 Hours, Nurburgring 24 Hours, Spa 24 Hours and the Daytona 24 Hours overall — all with Porsche.
Reshuffling the driver lineups over the winter paid off for the 40-year-old Briton, who was on the outside looking in last year as part of the No. 6 crew.

'To be the first person ever to do something is quite unbelievable,' Tandy said. 'You have to be proud you are put in a position to be able to compete in these races. It's something I've wanted to check off the list. Winning Daytona is massive by itself and to win just one of these would be something special for any career, but this is different.'
For Laurens Vanthoor, it was a particularly memorable one too — his first overall win at Daytona.
'It's always difficult to describe your feelings a couple of moments after it happened,' he said. 'I've been wanting this badly for a long time and if I went back 10 years ago I couldn't have dreamed of it. I couldn't be more grateful to sit here.'
When asked by RACER to comment on BMW's performance throughout the race and specifically his brother Dries — who dropped out of the top three in the final hour in the No. 24 — he gave an emotional response.
'It's special from a personal point of view, to see how many laps a Vanthoor led,' he said. 'He's my younger brother and to see him up there doing a tremendous job… At the end, I was like, 'Dries, p*** off!' But then you feel kind of sad when it doesn't work out.
'BMW were strong all race; they were really quick and I always saw them as a main contender. Dries is doing a very good job and I am sure his day will come.'
As for the Porsche and Penske tie-up, this is another momentous occasion. It may not have been the dream 1-2 finish in the end, but the team led 517 laps and kept the train rolling after the GTP side of the operation captured the Rolex 24 and a sweep of titles last year.
'Today was a team effort,' Diuguid concluded. 'I saw the stats; we made sure we used our two-car approach so that a PPM car was out front, controlling the race whenever we could. Every car had a chance to win today and we were the ones that came out on top because we covered all these bases to cover attacks from the Acuras, BMWs and Cadillacs.'
What else lies in store for the team in 2025? The WEC campaign kicks off soon and Sebring isn't that far away. Once again, PPM has the chance to win the Rolex 24 and Le Mans 24 in the same year. Will it find a way to make the most of this rare opportunity?

Denny Hamlin pulls out third win of year at Michigan

Denny Hamlin is still on baby watch, but he had one more workday to take care of Sunday. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made his way past William Byron with four laps to go and had enough gas to hang on and win the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. Racing a snappy purple No. 11 Toyota, Hamlin passed Byron's No. 24 Chevrolet with four circuits left on the two-mile track, and Byron ran out of gas coming to the white flag. The Hendrick Motorsports driver landed in 28th place. In delivering Toyota its second straight MIS win, Hamlin beat Ford's Chris Buescher by 1.09 seconds for his third Cup Series win this season and third at the Michigan track. His last victory there came in June 2011. 'I wanted to get the lead, (Byron) was doing a great job defending,' Hamlin said before taunting the crowd's mixture of cheers and boos. 'Daddy, I'm sorry, but I beat your favorite driver, folks.' When asked who that driver was, Hamlin, who led just five laps, said, 'All of them.' Hamlin and fiancee Jordan Fish are expecting their third child. Hamlin said he was prepared to leave the race if she went into labor during the first 50 laps. Hamlin won for the 57th time in his 701st career race, becoming just the 10th driver to win after making 700 starts. 'We've been so fast the entire year but haven't been finishing for one reason or another,' said Hamlin, 44. 'It feels good to come here to Michigan, where we've been so close over the years, and get a victory ... Such a gratifying day to restart 11th, 12th, something like that, and then drive to the front.' Ty Gibbs and Bubba Wallace were third and fourth, respectively. Gibbs is Hamlin's JGR teammate and Wallace drives for 23XI Racing, which Hamlin co-owns. Kyle Larson finished fifth. Byron grabbed the lead away from polesitter Chase Briscoe on Lap 12 of Stage 1, but Buescher passed Byron on Lap 36 of the 45-lap segment and earned his first stage win of 2025. Byron finished second while Hamlin, Briscoe and Josh Berry completed the top five in the incident-free stage. The first caution for cause waved on Lap 60 when Noah Gragson and John Hunter Nemechek, running just inside the top 20, spun on the backstretch to bunch up the field again, but seven laps later a hard wreck occurred in Turn 2. Riding in the bottom lane, last week's winner Ryan Blaney tapped Cole Custer's No. 41, triggering a mess that ended up with Alex Bowman's No. 48 Chevrolet crashing violently nose-first into the wall and Briscoe spinning after being clipped by Custer's Ford. That prompted a red-flag condition for cleanup. 'Yeah, that hurt a lot,' Bowman said. 'It was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and, unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits.' As Stage 2 neared its end, Blaney slapped the wall on his own in the No. 12 Ford and spun down the speedway, an unfortunate fifth caution for Christopher Bell, who pitted shortly before Blaney's mishap. The closing laps of the stage featured a spirited battle between Byron, Tyler Reddick, Austin Cindric and Carson Hocevar. Byron made the winning pass on the final lap for the stage win while Cindric was able to hold off Michigan native Hocevar for second. Hocevar took the point on Lap 152, but the Spire Motorsports driver suffered a flat left rear tire with 19 circuits left, turning over the lead to Byron. Hocevar finished 29th. McLaren Unveils 750S Le Mans Edition to Celebrate Iconic 1995 Victory

Read the full story on Modern Car Collector McLaren is channeling its motorsport legacy into a rare road-going tribute with the release of the 750S Le Mans, a limited-run supercar celebrating the marque's historic victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. Just 50 examples will be built, marking three decades since McLaren's race debut and unprecedented win with the now-legendary No. 59 McLaren F1 GTR. In its first-ever entry into the endurance race, McLaren clinched first place and filled four of the top five spots—a feat still regarded as one of the most iconic moments in Le Mans history. The special edition 750S draws inspiration directly from the victorious No. 59, notably offered in Le Mans Grey, the same livery worn by the winning car. Exclusive design cues on the 750S Le Mans include a functional roof scoop, the HDK (High Downforce Kit) with carbon fiber aerodynamic enhancements, and bespoke five-spoke LM wheels, nodding to the F1 GTR's original design. Gold brake calipers, titanium exhaust tips, and Le Mans badging further distinguish the edition, along with optional plaques celebrating McLaren's rare achievement of motorsport's Triple Crown—wins at Le Mans, the Indy 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix. While aesthetically steeped in nostalgia, performance is cutting-edge. The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 740 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, rocketing the car from 0 to 62 mph in under 2.8 seconds and up to a top speed of 206 mph. Power is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, while carbon-ceramic brakes provide stopping power equal to its straight-line force. In addition to honoring its 1995 triumph, McLaren says the 750S Le Mans also nods to its present-day GT3 EVO efforts and upcoming return to the top-tier Le Mans Hypercar class in 2027. With demand expected to be as intense as the race it celebrates, the 750S Le Mans is a collector-grade tribute to McLaren's legacy—past, present, and future. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Porsche Unveil Road Legal Version Of Their Le Mans Hypercar

Porsche Unveil Road Legal Version Of Their Le Mans Hypercar. Porsche have unveiled a one-off road legal version of their Le Mans hypercar, the 963 RSP. Revealed on the streets surrounding Le Mans, the car pays homage to the iconic 917 'Kurzheck' road car driven through France 50 years ago. The initials RSP nod to legendary motorsport figure Roger S. Penske, whose involvement was key to the project's realisation. In April 1975, Count Gregorio Rossi drove his privately owned Porsche 917 (chassis 030) from the company's Zuffenhausen base to Paris. Porsche marked the 50th anniversary of that unconventional adventure by recreating the moment with the all-new 963 RSP driving alongside the original 917. Despite being based on an uncompromising racing car, the 963 RSP has been adapted for limited road use. Ride height was raised, dampers softened, and the control unit modified to operate road-legal lighting and indicators. The hybrid powertrain – a 4.6-litre twin-turbocharged V8 paired with an electric motor – remains unchanged from the race version, though tuning adjustments were made to enable the car to run on conventional fuel and deliver smoother power for road use. The 963 RSP will be on display during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, before heading to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.
