This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke to Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen about his participation in this year's American Century Championship, which will take place July 9-13 at Edgewood Tahoe, and last year pushed both the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs to the limit.
"I think it's cool because there are probably 15-20 people you know who can win that event (American Century Championship). So it's like looking for similar guys, a similar level of golfer as you. You compete internally," said Thielen about celebrity competition in the tournament. "I think they have the same motivation, like, 'Alright, I know these guys are good, these girls are good, and I want to beat them." So it's not necessarily one person. It's really like a kind of group of people, as you know, are around the same skill level, and you're like, all right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna work a little bit harder this summer, to grind and figure out my game so I can compete against those people."
Thielen's Panthers pushed the Chiefs to the limit in Week 12 last season, losing 30-27 on a game-winning field goal from Spencer Shrader. Thielen believes the close losses to Kansas City and Philadelphia, both Super Bowl LIX teams, are moments to build on heading into 2025.
"Yeah, I think it gives us confidence going into this year that, hey, you know, we didn't win those games, and at the end of the day, there's no, a loss is a loss, like you're not getting anything out of a loss. But I think it gives you confidence going into this year to say, hey, we were right there." said Thielen, "The pieces that we've added, the leadership roles that have been replaced, and people just strong leaders have been brought into the facility, and then paired with just the players that we've added and free agency, the players that we've added and in the draft, I feel like. There was a really precise and thought-out plan this year, and so that, I think, gives us confidence that we were right there. We added pieces. We brought in great leadership. Let's see what happens."
The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, nearly $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in the golf world.

NFL to continue social justice messaging stencils in end zones for 2025 season

The NFL's social justice messaging is here to stay. For the sixth straight season, all 32 teams will display one of four social justice messages in the end zone at each home game. Teams can pick from "End Racism," "Stop Hate," "Choose Love" or "Inspire Change," which is a new addition that replaces the "Vote" stencil from 2024. Those messages will appear at one end zone, while "It Takes All of Us" continues to be stenciled at the other. "We're working hand-in-hand with players, and alongside our clubs, to amplify player voices and underscore what is most important to them," Anna Isaacson, the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, told The Associated Press. "For decades, the NFL and its players have been a unifying force in American culture and society that brings people of all cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport. "This is an honor and responsibility that the league takes seriously, which is why we actively invest in off-field programs and on-field initiatives that promote unity." All international games will feature "End Racism" and "It Takes All of Us" in the end zones. The Philadelphia Eagles have selected "Choose Love" as their season-opener message on Sept. 4 against the Dallas Cowboys and will rotate all four messages throughout the season. Once again, players can choose to feature one of the five messages on their helmets. According to the AP, the NFL has provided more than $460 million to dozens of grant partners and hundreds of grassroots organizations through its Inspire Change initiative, benefiting communities in need since 2017. The Inspire Change initiative has supported over 650 nonprofits and 2,100 players and alums, providing matching grants focused on mentorship, workforce development and addressing food insecurity.

NFL Players Go Viral For Chugging Miller Lites At Practice Thursday

NFL Players Go Viral For Chugging Miller Lites At Practice Thursday originally appeared on The Spun. This may be the most serious time of the year for NFL players other than the regular season itself, but that doesn't mean there can't be time for some fun. The Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles have been having joint practice this week ahead of their preseason game this weekend. At one point during practice, some of the players on the sidelines taking a break got together and decided to enjoy some Miller Lite beers together. "Best pic of the summer: big men on both teams cracking open Miller Lites on the field after practice like they did in the 70s," NFL analyst Warren Sharp noted on X. According to Philadelphia sports reporter Ashlyn Sullivan, it was Eagles offensive lineman Landon Dickerson who brought the brews. Following a successful surgery this week he decided to mark the occasion by bringing in a whole cooler of beer to share with his teammates and the Browns. "Landon Dickerson one day post surgery just brought out a cooler of Miller Lites to share with the #Browns OL… now that's a guys guy," Sullivan wrote. Fans loved it NFL fans found it very fun to see the players all getting together and having fun with some beers: "Ripping beers at work that's what I'm talking about!" one user declared. "All the boys say Hell Yeah," wrote another. "The best teams all have a good attitude to booze," a third wrote. "Offensive linemen are the best football players." "This is exactly what you want to see from your O-linemen." A few people complained that it was inappropriate, but many of those replies were written off as being a stick in the mud. But they did still make the point that the league will probably winding up fining Dickerson for that. But even if he does wind up a little lighter in the wallet, the players will probably say it was worth it. They might even reimburse him just for the fun memory. Eagles great Lane Johnson continues to cement his Hall of Fame credentials

As a prep star, longtime Philadelphia Eagles star Lane Johnson torched the competition as one of the better quarterbacks in the great state of Texas. That led to a season at Kilgore College, where he played tight end and QB. He threw for 510 passing yards and three touchdowns. After his freshman year, he transferred to join the Oklahoma Sooners. That's where many of us got to know him. Philadelphia made him the fourth overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft, during the Chip Kelly era. Thank Heaven he was a Howie Roseman selection. Lane Johnson further solidifies his Hall of Fame resume This isn't meant disrespectfully. This is more of a statement of how much he has grown and what he has overcome, but you can't tell the Lane Johnson story without detailing a pair of extensions and how he has turned his life around. Johnson was recently a guest on The Pivot Podcast. He detailed stories of navigating challenges with mental health and nagging injuries. That led to the questions about how long his career might continue. Had he left the game early, we may not be talking about the Pro Football Hall of Fame-worthy icon that he grew to become. Some of the best news we all heard last season was that Johnson would return to the Eagles in 2025. He said he'd do so regardless of the outcome of Super Bowl LIX. The other members of the Eagles 'core four have retired. With that decision made, Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham hand the O.G. title to the man Nick Sirianni calls 'the NFL's best offensive tackle'. Johnson has aged like a fine wine. He has gone from an excellent and dominant young tackle to an immovable NFL icon. He has redefined what success looks like at the offensive tackle position. He learned from Jason Peters and Jason Kelce. He's now a mentor to Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, and Tyler Steen. The resume speaks for itself. Lane Johnson is a six-time Pro Bowler (2017–2019, 2022–2024). Twice, he has been named a First-Team All-Pro (2017, 2022). Three times, he has been named a Second-team All-Pro (2021, 2023, 2024). Say what you will about Penei Sewell. He's fantastic, but he owes Johnson that First-Team All-Pro nod from 2024. Most importantly, Johnson is a two-time Super Bowl champion, and that is how history will remember him (unless he wins another one). He has long proven he is worthy of Pro Football Hall of Fame induction. Everything he does now adds to the icing on the cake. Watching him has been a privilege, one that will continue during the coming Eagles season.
