"Earlier, we also trained policemen from Manipur here. Although Goa is located far away from Assam, I hope that this event today has reduced the physical distance between the two states. Lots of people from Assam also work and live in Goa and I only hope that the Goa government will extend their cooperation whenever they are in distress," the Assam chief minister said.
Sawant said, "700
Goa Police recruits
will step into service as constables, shaped by training at Assam's Lachit Borphukan Police Academy. This is a proud outcome of Goa-Assam collaboration for law enforcement and national security." Sawant urged the new recruits to be sensitive to the people of Assam while performing their duties in Goa.

'Five-star treatment? Face the music': Kannada filmstar Darshan, Pavithra back in jail; 'he abused the liberty of bail', says Supreme court
NEW DELHI/BENGALURU: In a big setback to Kannada filmstar Darshan in the Renukaswamy murder case, Supreme Court Thursday cancelled the actor's bail, ordered his re-arrest and speedy trial in the case, while warning the state govt against allowing any five-star treatment to the accused in jail. About five hours after the verdict came in, the actor was taken into custody along with his girlfriend Pavithra Gowda and five other accused, whose bail was similarly revoked by the top court. With two of the accused in transit from Chitradurga, Darshan, Pavithra and three others were remanded in judicial custody and sent to Bengaluru Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara Thursday night. Observing that persons regardless of popularity are equal before the law, a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan set aside the Karnataka HC order of Dec 13, 2024, saying it suffers from "various infirmities". Moreover, the high court undertook examination at the pre-trial stage," the bench said. Justice Pardiwala said the bail-cancellation judgement conveys a message that however big the accused may be, he or she is not above the law. Five-star treatment? Face the music, SC tells govt The top court cautioned the state govt against providing special treatment to the accused in jail. 'The day we come to know the accused persons are being provided five-star treatment, the first step would be to place the superintendent into suspension along with all other officials,' the court said, adding the HC committed a 'manifest perversity' in the exercise of its discretion, warranting cancellation of bail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Filipinos don't know about this! Read More Undo The top court said popularity cannot be a shield for impunity, nor influence, resources and social status be the basis for grant of bail, adding evidence in the case indicates a premeditated and orchestrated crime, where the accused allegedly took the law into his own handsand engaged in systematic destruction of evidence. 'The bail order was granted primarily on the basis of the alleged urgent medical condition of the actor. However, a bare perusal reveals the plea was misleading, vague and grossly exaggerated. This establishes he abused the liberty of bail,' Justice Mahadevan, who penned the judgment for the bench, said. All seven arrested — including Nagaraju R, Lakshman M, Jagadeesh alias Jagga, Pradosh S Rao, and Anu Kumar — were taken to Annapoorneshwarinagar police station in west Bengaluru late Thursday. They were produced before the magistrate at his official residence in Koramangala and remanded in judicial custody. S Vishwajith Shetty of the high court granted the bail in Dec, citing delays in recording the statements of the witness and not furnishing the details of their arrest. After he came out of jail on regular bail, Darshan started participating in film-related events and acted in his next movie, which was shot in Dubai and Thailand. Arrested within hours of verdict Sources said Bengaluru city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh formed multiple teams, fanned them out across the city to arrest the accused within hours of the SC verdict. While Pavithra was arrested from Rajarajeshwarinagar, Darshan was picked up from an apartment in Hosakerehalli, Banashankari III Stage, around 4.15pm. Former CPWD DG loses Rs 1.4 lakh to online booking scam
Gurgaon: Former director general Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Puneet Kumar Vats, who is currently an empanelled DRB member in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), lost Rs 1.37 lakh while booking a suite in Hyderabad online. The website through which he booked his hotel turned out to be fake. Vats, 65, was allegedly doing travel arrangements for an official visit to a project site in Warangal, when he came across the website . He tried to reserve a suite for Aug 3 and Aug 5 through the website and initially contacted the number +91 9798168780 listed on the website. The respondent, identifying himself as Ajit, requested booking details via WhatsApp, which Vats provided. Since the QR code had a Rs 2,000 limit, Ajit sent a GPay link instead, through which Vats paid Rs 15,299 and shared the screenshot. Later, Ajit insisted the fees be paid separately, promising a refund of the initial Rs 15,299. Trusting him, Vats made two fresh payments—Rs 15,200 and Rs 99—and sent screenshots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Filipino credit card users should know about this! To "verify" the refund process, Ajit sent a QR code for a "reverse payment" of Rs 10, assuring Rs 20 would be returned. Vats received Rs 20, boosting his trust. Then, Ajit sent another QR code for Rs 15,289 as a "reverse payment," but Vats accidentally paid Rs 15,279. Ajit exploited this mistake, claiming the system was stuck and the "excess" amount was now Rs 30,578. He sent another QR code, instructing Vats to pay this sum for a full refund. Vats complied but received nothing back, as Ajit blamed another "payment fault." By then, Vats had lost significant money in the scam. On Vats's insistence, Ajit involved another person claiming to be his manager, Mahesh Kumar, who promised a quick refund. Kumar then told Vats that another payment of Rs 61,156 was needed to "confirm the booking and release refunds." After Vats paid Rs 61,156, hoping to secure the booking and recover the excess, his son informed him that the site was fraudulent. In total, Vats was defrauded of Rs 1.37 lakh. The cons made another attempt to contact him on Aug 1, but he did not respond. An FIR has been registered under Section 318(4) (cheating) of BNS at the cyber crime police station, Manesar. Police are yet to arrest the accused. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). The dividing bridge at the centre of Salt Lake violence
1 2 Kolkata: Salt Lake residents turned jittery after houses and gardens were vandalised on Wednesday, when a group of slum dwellers from the Kestopur Canal Road area hurled stones at police and targeted homes across the canal. The violence started moments after a 20-year-old app-based bike rider was killed when a private car rammed into his two-wheeler near the bridge connecting Salt Lake's AK Block with Kestopur Canal Road. While biker Soumen Mondal died, the pillion rider escaped with minor injuries. The new bridge seems to be the bone of contention. Vehicles speeding down the bridge and chaotic traffic management, long-standing socio-economic tensions and visible social divide—bungalow-style houses in Salt Lake on one side of the canal and rows of shanties on the other side in Kestopur—are being seen as possible triggers for the clash. People living on both sides of the canal seemed united in their anger at police and the social divide, albeit each group had their own point of view. Earlier we could sit by the roadside. Now we can't even sleep peacefully at homes," said Sandhya Maji, who lives at Ghoshpara in Kestopur. Akash Mondal, who lives at Siddharthanagar in Kestopur, is apparently upset over being forced to come under police glare. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Before the bridge was built, the strip of road in Kestopur did not have a direct link to main roads and consequently, remained away from cop monitoring. "Earlier, people riding their bikes in the locality did not have to bother about rules. Now, police fine us for almost every other reason—be it riding without helmets or skipping a signal," he said. The bridge, opened in Oct 2022, has become a key link for vehicles to and from Salt Lake and Kestopur and Baguiati. Pratik Banerjee, a resident of Sarat Abasan in Salt Lake, said, "What happened on Wednesday was scary. We shut our doors and windows, fearing attack on our house." Banerjee, a retired govt official, claimed the bridge had opened the door to more criminal activity, with a majority of perpetrators entering Salt Lake from the Kestopur side. "Petty theft has gone up. Criminals now have an easy exit from the township. Even disputes among slum dwellers sometimes spill over into Salt Lake. Police should intensify patrolling to prevent vandalism," he said. Motorists claimed traffic management lapses at that spot could have contributed to Wednesday's accident. At the crossroad, there was no 'stop' line or zebra crossing. A traffic sergeant and two civic volunteers were usually deployed there and they struggled to regulate the rush of vehicles from the four sides. The CCTV footage released by police showed biker Mondal stopping just before the signal, when the private vehicle hit him. The vehicle dragged Mondal to the roadside railing before both the vehicles burst into flames, leading to Mondal's death. "Had there been a 'stop' line and the bike had halted behind it, the biker could be saved," said Babla Sarkar, a motorist who drove past the bridge on Thursday. Lokenath Debnath, a delivery executive, said faulty signals gave bikers entering Salt Lake the impression of a free left turn, bringing them onto the path of oncoming traffic.
