
Mumbai Metro Line 4: MMRDA installs 48 m steel span above Ghodbunder Road
The steel structure comprises four huge steel girders that are 14 metres high and weigh 325 tonnes. With this installation, all the special steel spans from Majiwada to Kasarvadavli have been completed.
The new span is at the elevated portion of the corridor and was intended to span a complicated junction bordered by existing flyovers.
In order to have minimal interference, the contractors deployed heavy machinery in the form of 700-tonne and 550-tonne cranes with backup cranes, trailers and a safety team of over 100 engineers and labourers. Backing them up were more than 50 trained traffic wardens, standby ambulances and equipment such as manlifters and trucks.
Metro Line 4, extending more than 32.32 kilometres and having 32 stations, is intended to improve east-west connectivity in Mumbai. It will connect Wadala in the southern-central area of the city with Kasarvadavli in Thane, passing through important points like Chembur, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Thane.
Upon completion, the Metro Line 4 corridor would be able to bring down travel time between the eastern suburbs and Thane tremendously.
The milestone right now maintains the timeline for commissioning of the corridor under Phase 1.
The officials attributed the smooth completion of the high precision job to the coordination among different government agencies. 'We thank all the government authorities and agencies involved for their invaluable guidance and support, which played a crucial role in the successful and safe completion of the challenging work,' an MMRDA official said.

Citizens form human chain against Dongri Metro car shed
Mira Bhayander: Around 6,000 citizens of Mira Bhayander took to the streets on a Sunday morning and formed a human chain, silently protesting against tree felling at Dongri for the Metro Line 9 and Metro 7A, reports Vishal Rajemahadik. Mira-Bhayandar's major natural oxygen source, biodiversity, and local agriculture is in grave danger with car shed plans at Dongri, alleged the protestors. Villagers have warned that the agitation would be intensified if the tree felling continues. Last week, there was a huge uproar as activists and locals alleged the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) axed down trees without proper permissions and alleged they had understated the age of trees in its official report to reduce compensatory planting requirements and evade higher penalties. As per environmental activists and locals, satellite imagery from 2013 clearly shows the presence of mature trees in the area, some over 15 years old. However, MMRDA's contractor-reported data claims these trees were only four to six years old. CMRS completes inspection of Phase-1 of Mumbai Metro Lines 2B, 9. Commercial operations expected by the end of this year
Mumbai, July 3: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) completed the safety inspection of Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 2B and Metro Line 9 on Friday. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is the implementing agency for both metro lines, said the safety inspection was an important milestone before commencing passenger services on the two sections. 'After the inspection, the CMRS will report a checklist of compliance based on observations. A final inspection will be organised after making the necessary corrections before opening for the public, likely by the end of this year. Approval for opening can only be given after this last inspection to commence commercial operations on these lines,' a source told The Indian Express. On Friday, senior railway officials inspected overhead electric gear, signalling and communication systems, track geometry, and station facilities. The review also encompassed civil engineering features such as platform structures, emergency response systems, and passenger safety provisions. These inspections ensure that safety standards are met before new metro lines start commercial services. Once all the requirements are fulfilled and the safety certificate is issued by CMRS, the lines will be cleared for opening. Metro Line 2B Phase 1 covers a stretch of 5.39 kilometres and includes five stations between Mandale and Diamond Garden. This line is part of a larger corridor connecting DN Nagar to Mandale in the eastern suburbs. On the other hand, Phase 1 of Metro Line 9 is 4.4 kilometres long with four stations starting from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon. The line is being constructed as an extension of Metro Line 7 from Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar and is likely to enhance connectivity in the western suburbs.
