Median monthly wage for formal sector rises to RM3,000 in Q1 2025: DOSM

PUTRAJAYA: The median monthly wage for Malaysia's formal sector rose 5.5 per cent to RM3,000 in March 2025, up from RM2,844 a year earlier, according to the Employee Wages Statistics (Formal Sector) Report for the First Quarter of 2025, released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) today. In a statement today, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase reflects the country's continued economic growth and the impact of the revised minimum wage policy, which has positively influenced the labour market. As of March, he said the formal sector workforce stood at 6.8 million, comprising 55.1 per cent men and 44.9 per cent women. The median wage for male employees remained at RM3,000, while female employees saw a 6.5 per cent increase to RM2,982, compared to a 3.4 per cent rise for men. The highest year-on-year wage growth was recorded among workers under 20, with their median wage rising 13.3 per cent to RM1,700, largely driven by the reimplementation of the minimum wage policy in February. However, a slight drop was observed in the number of workers aged 20 to 24. He added that the mining and quarrying sector posted the highest median wage at RM8,800, although it accounted for just 0.6 per cent of total formal employment. The agriculture sector remained the lowest, with a median wage of RM2,200. Geographically, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest median monthly wage at RM4,445 in March 2025, followed by Selangor at RM3,300. At the other end of the spectrum, Sabah posted a median wage of RM2,000, while Kelantan and Perlis recorded the lowest at RM1,800. Mohd Uzir said 27.4 per cent of Malaysian formal sector workers earned below RM2,000 per month as of March, down 3.8 percentage points from 31.2 per cent in the same month last year. He added that a percentile analysis revealed workers in the bottom 10th percentile earned RM1,700 or less, while those in the top 10th percentile earned at least RM11,000 per month. New road linking Meluan to Layar approved by Sarawak govt
SARIKEI: The Sarawak government has approved a proposal to construct a new six-kilometre road connecting Ulu Entabai and Ulu Entaih in Meluan, Julau, to Ulu Penebak in Layar, Betong. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the decision during the opening ceremony of the Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau. He stated that the road would reduce travel time from Meluan to Betong and Kuching to approximately two and a half hours. 'This road will transform Meluan from a remote interior area into an accessible part of Kuching,' he said. Residents will now be able to travel to Kuching within two and a half hours and return the following day. The project will also help farmers transport agricultural produce to markets in Kuching more efficiently. Abang Johari estimated the construction cost to reach tens of millions of ringgit. Meluan Assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin proposed the road, highlighting benefits for 2,500 longhouse residents, three primary schools, and a clinic. The project will also expedite surveys for indigenous customary land rights in the area. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas supported the proposal during the event. Additional approved projects include the RM92 million Nanga Lasi/Balut/Suchong road upgrade and the RM80 million Jalan Lijan project. The RM150 million Jalan Nanga Entaih/Rh Sang Lasa, Kemalih project includes 13 connecting roads. A RM5 million plantation road is also part of the RM327 million total allocation. The newly completed 96-metre Nanga Lasi steel bridge replaces an old suspension bridge, improving safety and connectivity. Since its completion on January 16, the bridge has served 2,250 residents, linking Nanga Lasi-Balut and easing travel to Sarikei and Sibu. - Bernama

Moscow warns of 'titanic efforts' to disrupt Putin-Trump meeting
MOSCOW: Certain countries will make 'titanic efforts' to disrupt the meeting U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin for August 15, Russia's investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said on Saturday. Trump had said earlier that Russia and Ukraine were close to a ceasefire deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year conflict. The contents of the deal have yet to be announced, but it could require Ukraine to surrender significant territory - an outcome many European nations oppose. Dmitriev accused unnamed countries of seeking to prolong the war. 'Undoubtedly, a number of countries interested in continuing the conflict will make titanic efforts to disrupt the planned meeting between President Putin and President Trump,' he said in a post in his Telegram account, specifying that by efforts he meant 'provocations and disinformation'. Dmitriev did not specify which countries he was referring to or what kind of 'provocations' they might undertake. The Kremlin earlier confirmed the summit. The two leaders will 'focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis,' Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said, adding: 'This will evidently be a challenging process, but we will engage in it actively and energetically.' - REUTERS
