Game on! Here are the five best cities for a 'sportcation' in Australia
From backyard cricket to local footy matches and tennis grand slams, sport is just part of daily life Down Under. And there's no doubt Australia is one of the best places in the world for live sports. We're the only country in the Southern Hemisphere to have hosted the Summer Olympics twice, have hosted more Commonwealth Games than any other nation, and have our own annual line-up of homegrown tournaments. Now, with more Aussie travellers switching into sports mode, we're spotlighting the top destinations to catch the action.
According to Skyscanner, our growing obsession with sports travel is largely thanks to the rise of 'behind-the-scenes' sports shows like Netflix's Drive to Survive, Break Point and Full Swing. Their 2025 Travel Trends report reveals that more than a quarter of Aussies plan to travel either domestically or internationally to see a sporting event in 2025. And honestly, we totally get it. Nothing beats the buzz of watching the action live, joining a Mexican wave and maybe even having a cheeky tiffle with the opposing team.
While Melbourne has long held the unofficial title of Australia's sporting capital, a new study by Compare The Market has dubbed its rival, Sydney, as the best city for a sportcation. The travel insurance site pitted the cities against each other on seven factors, including the number of sports teams, stadiums, bars, camps and parks.
Sydney took home gold as the ultimate city for sports spectators, with the highest number of sports bars and sports camps in all of Australia. However, in terms of Aussie sports teams, we'd say it's an even playing field. Sydney is of course the NRL capital, with nine teams compared to Melbourne's one, while the Victorian capital is the undisputed heart of AFL with ten teams compared to Sydney's two.
If you're looking to catch the action live, we say Melbourne, which took silver, is an equally great place for sports. For starters, it's the only city on the planet that hosts both a tennis Grand Slam and a Formula One World Championship race. It's also home to Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the country's largest sports stadium, which hosts the world's highest-attended annual cricket match.
Sydney and Melbourne are the only two cities to have Olympic Games bragging rights in Australia, but Brisbane 's time to shine is coming in 2032. The Queensland capital currently ranks as the third best city for a sportcation, with many flying to Brissy to attend the NRL Magic Round – the world's largest festival of rugby league.
Australia's most recent Commonwealth Games host city, the Gold Coast, ranked fourth, while Adelaide swooped in at fifth. This year, the South Australian capital broke records for Adelaide Airport's busiest week, with approximately 200,000 travellers descending on the city for the AFL Gather Round. "I also wanted us to think about what's next, you know - don't settle for this. "We've got a taste of it now. My players have got a taste for it. The club's got a taste for it. Well, let's make sure we're back here again." Postecoglou has previously labelled media speculation over his future ' weird '. "I'll be honest, I've been finding it really weird talking about my future when we've done something unprecedented," the Aussie-Greek manager told reporters after Spurs lost 4-1 at home to Brighton on the final day. "I've had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is kind of in the position to do so, I guess. But I can't answer that question about me and my future, and part of me is kind of thinking, well, why have I been asked that question? But it is what it is. "And I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while, and you just have to look at those clubs' trajectory even after I've left, they're still competing for things. "I really think this is a moment in time where this club can really push on and be a real contender for honours on a yearly basis." Disney+ users warned to check important detail to avoid £1,000 fine
Disney+ users are at risk of a big fine if they don't follow this one rule. For the next five years, the streaming platform will possess the broadcasting rights for the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe, as announced last month. However, if football fans wish to tune in, they'll have to check one key detail. From October, Disney+ subscribers will be able to stream every match. There'll be no additional cost to their monthly fee, provided they have a TV licence. Even though you are not watching the games on channels such as BBC, a licence is still required when viewing live television. Yes, even on Disney+. If you are caught streaming live content without a licence, you could receive an unwelcome £1,000 fine. Don't worry, these restrictions won't impact the rest of the Disney+ experience, as on-demand content – aka, not live – can still be viewed without a TV licence and for no extra cost. Making the announcement at the end of May, Disney+ said: 'Disney+ will be the home of the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe from next season, allowing fans to watch every match live at no extra cost.' They explained that this 'follows a five-year deal in which The Walt Disney Company has secured live rights to the competition from 2025/26 to 2029/30.' 'As the only place fans can watch all live matches in the competition, coverage on Disney+ will launch in October 2025, marking a new era for the UEFA Women's Champions League with the introduction of the 18-team League phase format,' explained the streamer. 'Bringing more excitement, unpredictability and bigger clashes from the League phase through to the 2026 Final at Ullevaal Stadion, Oslo, all 75 matches in the competition will be live streamed on Disney+.' Marking the streamer's first-ever late-night talk show, it aired live from the US with the comedian at the helm, with viewers needing a TV licence to watch without the risk of repercussions. Major boxing legend 'bags huge role in Guy Ritchie's Netflix flick The Gentlemen' as filming kicks off
Champion boxer Chris Eubank Jr has reportedly begged himself a role in Guy Ritchie 's Netflix hit The Gentlemen series two. The athlete, 35, who is the son of Chris Sr, is believed to be thrilled to have secured as he will join the cast for the second series, according to The Sun. The drama tells the story of Edward 'Eddie' Horniman, the 14th Duke of Halstead, played by Theo James, who inherits a country estate run by mobsters. A TV insider told the publication: 'Naturally, Chris will play a boxer, and a big part of The Gentlemen is about fighting because it's a sport the gangsters in the show are embroiled in. 'Guy Ritchie has frequently involved boxing in his gangster dramas, most notably Snatch, which had Brad Pitt as a bare-knuckle fighter. Meanwhile Vinnie Jones, who plays hardman Geoffrey Seacombe, wielded a baseball bat as his character violent knocked one rider from their saddle. Also joining the cast for the new season is Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville, who is best known for playing Robert Crawley in ITV drama. According to The Sun, the identity of Hugh's character will remain under wraps, with fans left in suspense. The Gentlemen is based on Guy's 2019 film of the same name which starred Matthew McConaughey, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Grant. The first series' synopsis read: 'When aristocratic Eddie inherits the family estate, he discovers that it's home to an enormous weed empire — and its proprietors aren't going anywhere.' The show also has a star-studded cast that includes Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Joshua McGuire, Edward Fox, and Giancarlo Esposito. Many fans rushed to review site Rotten Tomatoes to give their praise following the show's first series. It has received 75 per cent on the Tomatometer and 83 per cent on the Popcornmeter. Meanwhile one said on IMBD: 'The best thing Netflix has produced in a very long time.' 'Well worth a watch - instant classic. Guy Ritchie making a series is just a wonderful thing. 8 pockets of brilliance, almost like 8 movies in one.' 'I couldn't stop binging this! It's a funny and wild ride with an ensemble cast. Theo James was born to play this role and I couldn't help thinking he would make a great Bond, especially after episode 2. 'Kaya Scodelario is brilliant as the steely Susie Glass.
