Insistence on Marathi natural, but also respect Indian languages: Fadnavis

New Delhi, Amid a language war in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted on Thursday that language cannot be a means of discord and a Marathi person can never be narrow-minded on such issues. Insistence on Marathi natural, but also respect Indian languages: Fadnavis Addressing a function at the Jawaharlal Nehru University here, Fadnavis said his government's policy has been Marathi along with other Indian languages, even as parts of Mumbai were rocked by violent protests against the "imposition of Hindi" in Maharashtra. "Language is a means of communication, but never of discord. Mother tongue is important. Every Marathi person is proud of the Marathi language. Insistence on Marathi is natural and justified, but we should also respect other Indian languages," he said. Fadnavis was speaking at a function to inaugurate the Kusumagraj Special Centre for Marathi Language, Literature and Culture and the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies at the JNU. "The debate is not Marathi versus Hindi. There is no alternative to Marathi. A Marathi person has to accept Marathi. But our policy is Marathi along with other Indian languages. We should learn Marathi and also know other languages," he said. "I say time and again, a Marathi person can never be narrow-minded. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj never taught us to be narrow-minded. Sant Dyaneshwar prayed for the welfare of the entire world and not just his followers," the chief minister added. Fadnavis said a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji will also be installed at the JNU campus and Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has agreed to a proposal of his government in this regard. The Maharashtra government's decision to introduce a three-language formula in primary schools led to protests by Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena over the "imposition of Hindi". The state government rolled back its decision, but the issue united the estranged Thackeray cousins, who claimed to have joined hands for the cause of Marathi. Earlier, Fadnavis faced protests on the JNU campus from a group of Students' Federation of India activists. The Kusumagraj Special Centre will focus on Marathi language, literature and cultural traditions and is named after the iconic Marathi poet and Jnanpith awardee. It will offer postgraduate and certificate-level programmes to promote multilingualism and cultural understanding. The Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Special Centre for Security and Strategic Studies will explore indigenous strategic traditions based on the Maratha empire. The centre is envisioned to become a hub for military history, strategy and future policy development rooted in India's past. Ruckus in Belagavi council over MES member's demand for govt. documents in Marathi

A demand by a council member belonging to Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) for providing documents and council proceedings in Marathi led to heated arguments and ruckus in the monthly council meeting of the Municipal Corporation in Belagavi on Thursday. The demand was made to MES member Ravi Salunke and it was supported by MES-backed members Shivaji Mandolkar and Viashali Bhatkande. However, this was strongly opposed and condemned by other members, including those of the ruling party (BJP). Reacting strongly to the demand, nominated member Ramesh Sontakki pointed out that although Kannadigas are a majority in Akkalkot, Jath and Solapur, government documents are being provided there only in Marathi and not in Kannada. He urged the council not to pass any resolution in favour of giving documents in Marathi and pointed out that the MES members are repeatedly raising the issue unnecessarily. Floor leader Hanumanth Kongali demanded that the proceedings of the council should be conducted as per the agenda and none, including Ravi Salunke, should be allowed to deviate from it. Taking strong exception to Mr. Salunke's demand, other BJP members demanded that Mr. Salunke should be disqualified for taking a stand that is against the State of Karnataka. As the altercation among ruling party members and MES members escalated leading to cacophony, Mayor Mangesh Pawar adjourned the meeting for five minutes. Meanwhile, MLA Abhay Patil said that Congress support extended to him is the reason for such behaviour of Mr. Salunke. After the meeting resumed, the BJP members demanded that the proceedings be conducted as per agenda and rules and that none should speak in between or create confusion by raising unwarranted issues. Mr. Mangesh Pawar ruled that if members violated the rules, then he will be forced to take action.

'We respect and will try to learn it': Ajit Pawar's suggestion to non-Marathi speakers in the state; stirs language row

Ajit Pawar NEW DELHI: Deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday urged non-Marathi speakers in Maharashtra to be sensitive and respectful toward the local language. He advised them to acknowledge Marathi and show a willingness to learn it, saying that this simple gesture could help prevent unnecessary conflict amid the growing language tensions in the state. "Nothing will happen to someone who says that we are living in Maharashtra but can't speak very good Marathi. However, we respect the language and will try to learn it,' he said as reported by PTI. Pawar emphasised that the language of the state one lives in should be respected. 'It doesn't happen always, people react badly many times. You should respect the language of the state you live in, at least a little bit," he added. His comments come as the language row in Maharashtra continues to escalate and has now reached Parliament. Earlier during the day, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey came under fire from women MPs from Maharashtra over his controversial comment, 'tumko patak patak ke marenge (we'll thrash you thoroughly)' while referring to Maharashtrians. Surrounded by angry women MPs demanding clarification, Dubey quickly backtracked and said, 'Jai Maharashtra'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The BJP MP's remark was a response to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray who threatened non-Marathi speakers with, 'dubo-dubo ke maarenge (thrash them thoroughly).' The MNS, known for its aggressive stand on the 'sons-of-the-soil' issue, has taken the language matter seriously. Raj Thackeray has continued to make fiery speeches and said he is 'proud of his soldiers'. The ongoing tension has led to several confrontations between Marathi and non-Marathi speakers. In one recent incident, a man was beaten by MNS workers for refusing to speak Marathi and challenging them by saying, 'I will not speak in the language. What will you do?' Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has condemned such attacks, calling the use of violence over language issues unacceptable.
