EFF calls for Senzo Mchunu's head over Mkhwanazi's allegations

The South African17 hours ago
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA have called for the immediate suspension of the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu following KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi's startling allegations.
Mkhwanazi held an explosive media briefing on Sunday morning, 6 July, about police operations in KwaZulu-Natal and the disbandment of the political killings task team, which was formed in May 2018.
In April, Mkhwanazi told EWN that Mchunu was likely influenced in writing a letter to the national commissioner in December 2024, requesting that the KZN political killings task team be disbanded. He believed probes by the task team into senior police officials are causing panic at the national head office.

WILL PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA SUSPEND SENZO MCHUNU?
During the media briefing on Sunday, Mkhwanazi revealed that the political killings task team has uncovered a syndicate including senior politicians, senior police officials, metro police, officials in correctional services, prosecutors, and other influential businesspeople that is controlled by a drug cartel in Gauteng and KZN.
Mkhwanazi also accused the minister of police of political interference in investigations.
Reacting to the allegations, the EFF said the briefing laid bare the existence of a powerful, organised crime syndicate operating at the highest levels of the South African state.
The party said the level of coordination, resourcing, and political protection confirms the EFF's long-held view that the ANC-led government has become a breeding ground for a mafia state, where political office is used not to serve the people, but to shield criminals and extract public wealth.
'This was confirmed not so long ago by NPA's National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, who highlighted the infiltration of the prosecuting authority, which made it impossible to prosecute cases effectively. Essentially, the ANC government, through individuals like Senzo Mchunu, has transformed the state into a haven for gangsters masquerading as leaders,' the party said.
URGENT DEBATE ON THE DEEPENING CRISIS WITHIN SAPS
Meanwhile, ActionSA has written to the Speaker of Parliament to request an urgent debate on the deepening crisis within the South African Police Service and the broader criminal justice system, following explosive Mkhwanazi's allegations.

'The Commissioner's unprecedented claims, pointing to widespread criminal infiltration and corruption at the highest levels of the SAPS, including the Minister of Police, raises grave concerns about the integrity and functionality of the country's law enforcement leadership, and more critically the troubling national security threat this poses,' the party said.

Victims urged not to withdraw gender-based violence cases

The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature has urged victims of crime, particularly those affected by gender-based violence (GBV), to refrain from withdrawing criminal cases against perpetrators. In a statement on Sunday, the Portfolio Committee said this urgent call follows growing concern over a troubling trend that threatens to undermine efforts to combat GBV and ensure justice for victims. The committee raised this issue during an oversight visit to the Fochville Police Station on Friday, followed by a stakeholder engagement session at Greenspark Community Hall. 'During these engagements, the committee was alarmed by a report from the Station Commander indicating that 64 GBV cases had been withdrawn by victims, allowing alleged perpetrators to evade justice and remain a threat within their communities,' the portfolio committee said. According to police reports, these withdrawals are often driven by financial inducements from perpetrators and pressure from families, who encourage victims to 'resolve matters privately'. 'The committee strongly condemns this practice, warning that it not only places victims at further risk but also undermines the integrity of the criminal justice system. The withdrawal of serious cases such as GBV enables repeat offenses including rape, assault, and even murder. 'The committee urges communities to stand with victims and allow the law to take its course,' the portfolio committee said. Furthermore, the committee emphasised that this pattern is not isolated to Fochville but is emerging as a province-wide concern, threatening progress in reducing crime and securing justice for survivors. 'The committee calls on all stakeholders including traditional leaders, community-based organisations, and faith-based institutions to actively educate communities on the importance of reporting GBV and pursuing justice. Victims must be protected and supported, not silenced or coerced,' the statement read. As part of its ongoing Focused Intervention Study on SAPS compliance with the Domestic Violence Act, the Committee will continue to engage stakeholders and monitor police stations across Gauteng to ensure accountability and improved service delivery in the fight against GBV. – At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. 'Grave national security concern': Ramaphosa calls for restraint amid tensions in SAPS

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he has noted statements made on Sunday in a media briefing by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi made damning allegations against police minister Senzo Mchunu. He accused the minister of interfering with police investigations and also being an associate of people with questionable characters. Mchunu has denied all the allegations made against him. 'This is a matter of grave national security concern that is receiving the highest-priority attention. It is vital that the integrity of the country's security services is safeguarded and that the rule of law is affirmed,' Ramaphosa said 'All parties to this matter are called upon to exercise discipline and restraint. The trading of accusations and counter-accusations threatens to undermine public confidence and sow confusion. Furthermore, these actions damage the unity and focus of the police.' The Presidency said Ramaphosa will outline the actions to be taken on this matter on his return from the Brics Leaders' Summit currently under way in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. TimesLIVE

Don't get taken in by these official-looking extortionists

Criminals are always looking for new ways to con people into parting with their money. The latest ploy involves tricking people in Gqeberha into believing they have been linked to some or other criminal activity and convincing them to pay up to avoid arrest or to click on a fake app, which leads to their bank accounts being cleared out. Fear of being arrested for something they did not do drives most of the victims to quickly pay to make the 'crime' go away. Though the police are investigating the extortion racket, this is little solace for the victims as the money is unlikely to be recovered. The scammers, dressed in customs or police uniforms, WhatsApp video call the victims and inform them that they have been implicated in crimes such as drug smuggling or counterfeit documents, money laundering and even murder. In some cases, they appear to be sitting in a police van, with the sound of police radios in the background. It looks and sounds authentic. The scare tactic convinces the terrified victims to hand over money or provide their banking details and log on to fake police apps, only to find later that their bank accounts have been emptied. One man lost all the money he had — R36,000 — after getting a call from a con artist who said he was a 'sergeant from the Pretoria police station', telling him he had been linked to someone involved in sex trafficking, money laundering and murder. He was then called back on WhatsApp video, where he saw a man in full police uniform with South African and police flags behind him. He followed various instructions and an hour after the call ended discovered his bank account had been cleared out. Another victim was told that she had been linked to a parcel containing drugs in Cape Town. Worried and confused, she paid the crooks R23,000. These criminals use fear to achieve their goal. Combined with the use of police uniforms and equipment, it all seems real and makes it easy to manipulate people into paying up. We urge people to drop the call and immediately call an official police number to check whether the claims are real should they ever find themselves being extorted in this way. And whatever you do, never, ever give your banking details or other personal information over the phone or after clicking on links sent to you by unknown people. The Herald
