MP urges Centre to improve infrastructure of Anganwadi centres in Sikkim

News186 days ago
Gangtok, Aug 7 (PTI) Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has urged the Centre for immediate steps to improve the infrastructure of Anganwadi centres (AWCs) in rural, tribal and high altitude regions of the Himalayan state.
A statement from the MP's office said on Thursday that Subba, in a representation to Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitra Thakur, has underscored the pivotal role Anganwadi Centres play under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme—delivering early childhood education, nutrition, and maternal health support.
However, he said, many AWCs across the country, especially in geographically challenging areas like Sikkim, continue to function from temporary or substandard structures that lack essential facilities such as child-friendly classrooms, safe kitchens, functional toilets, and secure boundary walls.
The lone Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim expressed concern over the inadequacy of the current unit cost norms for AWC construction. He said that the existing budget allocations are insufficient to build durable, climate-resilient structures in hilly terrains due to significantly higher construction and transportation costs and limited working seasons.
Subba emphasised the urgent need to revise unit cost norms to enable quality infrastructure development that meets the needs of children and Anganwadi workers, the statement said.
The MP has urged for increasing unit cost allocations for construction in hilly and Himalayan states like Sikkim to reflect cost inflation and address logistical difficulties.
He also asked for prioritising permanent infrastructure in rural and remote areas where AWCs still operate in makeshift or rented facilities and design flexibility to accommodate local geo-climatic conditions and include child-centric, weather-insulated infrastructure. PTI COR RG

Indian Ports Bill will strengthen maritime sector, says MP Sribharat

Highlighting the role of maritime infrastructure in India's economic growth, Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat on Tuesday extended his support to the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, during a discussion in the Parliament. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Sribharat described the Bill as a much-needed step towards streamlining port development, improving ease of doing business, ensuring effective dispute resolution, and creating a unified framework for port identification and regulation across the country. The MP noted the significant progress achieved in Andhra Pradesh's port sector in the past decade. 'The turnaround time for ships at major ports has halved, and India's international shipment ranking has risen sharply,' he said. He said that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's plan to establish a themed port, every 50 km, specialising in sectors such as petrochemicals, ship repair, and shipbuilding, as a major driver of regional growth. The MP also referred to the recent conclave in Visakhapatnam, attended by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and representatives from seven Bay of Bengal nations, as a testament to the State's growing prominence in international maritime cooperation. 'Andhra Pradesh is already emerging as a leader in cruise tourism, with successful cruise operations and more in the pipeline,' he observed. Mr. Sribharat urged the House to adopt the Bill 'in the spirit of nation-building', emphasising that it would strengthen India's maritime capabilities and bring lasting benefits to coastal communities.

SC to hear on August 14 plea for restoring Jammu & Kashmir statehood

The Supreme Court would on Thursday hear a plea for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. A bench of Chief Justice of India B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran is likely to hear the matter, according to the causelist. The application was filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat , an academician, and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, a socio-political activist. Live Events "It is submitted that the delay in the restoration of statehood would cause serious reduction of democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir, causing a grave violation of the idea of federalism which forms part of the basic structure of the Constitution of India," the application said. The assembly elections and the Lok Sabha polls were conducted peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir without any incident of violence, disturbance or any security concerns being reported, it said. "Therefore, there is no impediment of security concerns, violence or any other disturbances which would hinder or prevent the grant/restoration of the status of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as had been assured by the Union of India in the present proceedings," the plea said. The non-restoration of the status of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir, the plea said, would result in a lesser form of elected democratic government to the state, particularly given legislative assembly results were declared on October 8, 2024. Despite the apex court's directions for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir "at the earliest and as soon as possible", no steps have been taken by the Centre to provide any timeline for the implementation of such directions, it claimed. "Jammu and Kashmir is being operated as a Union Territory for a period of almost five years now, which has caused many impediments and grave losses to the development of Jammu and Kashmir and has affected the democratic rights of its citizens," the plea added. In its December 2023 verdict, the apex court held that Article 370, which was incorporated in the Indian Constitution in 1949 to grant special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a temporary provision. The President of India was empowered to revoke the measure in the absence of the Constituent Assembly of the erstwhile state whose term expired in 1957, the court said.
