Proactive Steps Are More Important
A recent rumour has raised concerns about widespread infections and deaths in poultry farms. Some have also spoken of widespread disease and a lack of vaccinations.
With the rapid spread of the news on social media, concern among everyone—breeders, traders, and consumers—grew. However, an official response came quickly from the Ministry of Agriculture and General Organization For Veterinary Services to deny this rumor. They announced that no unnatural deaths had been recorded, and that all veterinary vaccinations are available in all governorates. Veterinary monitoring teams are monitoring farm conditions daily, and no epidemic outbreaks have been detected. The swift response came in a timely manner to reassure everyone and dismiss the malicious rumor. This is undoubtedly a good thing.
But amid these reassurances, the question remains: How do we prevent these concerns from recurring? And when do we move from reaction to proactive planning?
The poultry industry in Egypt has made great strides in recent years, and we have reached self-sufficiency. There are even exports to Arab and African markets. However, to date, significant challenges are facing farmers, such as high costs, sometimes difficult access to vaccinations, and a lack of awareness in some areas.
It is important to strive to achieve strong and stable self-sufficiency in poultry, by supporting farmers, as 80% of production comes from them in addition to developing breeding systems to be safer and more productive and ensuring the availability of feed and vaccinations at reasonable prices. Transparency must be ensured, and any health problems that arise in any region must be immediately reported. Coordination must be maintained among all responsible authorities, and farmers must not be left to face challenges alone.
The rumor was dismissed, and the reassurances came just in time. However, the real work must begin to develop this industry, which represents a fundamental pillar of food security. What is required is not only to respond to crises, but also to prepare for them before they begin, and to work toward achieving strong self-sufficiency that every farmer and every consumer can feel.

EAPD seeking doctors for Egyptian hospitals in Gabon, Eritrea - Foreign Affairs
The Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) issued a call for internists and ophthalmologists to work in the Egyptian-Gabonese Hospital in Libreville and the Egyptian clinic in the Eritrean capital, Asmara. On Wednesday, the EAPD announced that French-speaking internists wishing to work in Gabon and English-speaking ophthalmologists wishing to work in Eritrea must have a master's degree and at least five years of experience. It added that the contracts will span one year, with the option to renew for up to four years. Applicants should not be older than 55 years. They should send their CVs to the designated email by 25 August: [email protected]. The announcement comes as Egypt strengthens relations with various African countries through the EAPD. The EAPD, established in June 2014, is a government agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is dedicated to supporting Africa's development aspirations through capacity building, knowledge transfer, and promoting creative industries. In 2019, Egypt's Ministry of Health opened the Egyptian clinic in Asmara, under the slogan of "Long live Egypt-Africa," and dispatched a medical team of Egyptian ophthalmologists to Eritrea. In 2021, the EAPD signed a cooperation protocol with Egypt's General Authority for Healthcare (GAH) to train the medical sector of African expatriates in various fields and introduce Egypt's experience in developing the health system. The protocol, which aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and the African Union Agenda 2063, also covers cooperation in transferring the experience of the Good Life initiative in the health sector to African countries. In June, the EAPD launched a pioneering study titled "The Investment Map in Africa," which will support Egyptian companies seeking to expand into African markets. The study will help Egyptian businesses explore new markets across Africa and offer detailed insights into promising sectors such as agriculture, mining, construction, technology, renewable energy, and water resource management. During his West African tour in July, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty highlighted Egypt's ongoing efforts to support development in Africa, particularly through the activities of the EAPD. The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported, citing the Ministry of Defense's Rehabilitation Department, that approximately 80,000 wounded soldiers are currently being treated. It added that 26,000 wounded soldiers suffer from mental disorders. The Ministry of Defense's Rehabilitation Department also explained that the number of wounded soldiers and the prevalence of suicide are a major challenge. The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported, citing Israeli military investigations, that 16 soldiers have committed suicide since the beginning of the year due to combat conditions related to the war in Gaza. UNFPA Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in North Darfur, Urges Urgent Global Response
Ahmed Emam The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a stark warning over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in North Darfur, highlighting the severe impact on women and girls amid escalating conflict and mounting displacement. In a statement released by UNFPA's Arab States Regional Director, Laila Baker, the agency expressed deep concern over the ongoing siege of Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and the surrounding areas, where critical food and medical aid deliveries have been blocked, pushing tens of thousands toward starvation. "Women and girls are bearing the brunt of this crisis," the statement read. "Hospitals have been repeatedly targeted, medical personnel killed, and the last functioning facility in Al Fasher—its maternity hospital—is overwhelmed and operating far beyond its capacity. Tragically, some women have died while waiting to give birth in hospital wards." UNFPA has called on all parties to the conflict to immediately allow rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to North Darfur, including Al Fasher. Since April 2025, renewed violence has forced an estimated 327,000 people to flee to Tawila, many of them displaced from Zamzam camp. Tawila now hosts over half a million displaced people, severely straining its limited health infrastructure and resources. "The health system in Tawila is on the verge of collapse," UNFPA warned. "There are massive shortages in essential medicines and supplies, leaving hundreds of thousands—including an estimated 22,400 pregnant women—without access to life-saving health care." While UNFPA and its partners continue to deploy medical teams and distribute reproductive health supplies, the scale of need far exceeds available services. Efforts to expand health infrastructure in Tawila have stalled due to critical funding gaps. "The lack of funding for essential services could cost countless lives," said Baker. "We urgently call on the international community to scale up its support and help prevent further suffering and avoidable loss of life."
