Kerala Man, Arrested Over Wife's Death By Suicide In UAE, Released On Bail
A month after the death of Chavara native Athulya Shekhar (29) in Sharjah, Kerala Police on Sunday detained her husband Satheesh (40), the sole accused in the case, at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. Police said Satheesh, who arrived from the UAE, will be handed over to Thekkumbhagam Police in Kollam district, which had registered a case against him under Sections relating to murder, cruelty, voluntarily causing hurt, and relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. According to Thekkumbhagam police, Satheesh had already secured anticipatory bail from the District Court. "We will record his statement and release him on bail as per the court's direction," a senior officer said. The State Home Department has since transferred the investigation to the State Crime Branch. The case began after Athulya's parents lodged a complaint alleging that she was subjected to repeated harassment, physical abuse, and dowry-related demands by Satheesh. They claimed that their daughter often confided in them about the abuse, and that they had repeatedly urged her to leave him. Athulya's death on July 19 sent shockwaves through her native village. She was found hanging inside her apartment in Sharjah. Her mortal remains were repatriated to Kerala the same day, and a post-mortem examination was conducted at Parippally Medical College. While Sharjah Police have reportedly classified the death as a case of suicide, Athulya's family insists that the abuse she endured drove her to take the extreme step. They also alleged that Satheesh's violent behaviour had been escalating in recent months. In his statement to the media earlier, Satheesh denied responsibility for his wife's death but admitted to physically assaulting and abusing her. "I am not the reason for her death," he said, adding that there were "differences" in their marriage. The incident has reignited debates in Kerala over domestic violence, dowry harassment, and the challenges of prosecuting such cases when they occur abroad. Women's rights groups have called for a thorough probe, noting that overseas deaths of Indian women are often hastily labelled suicides without examining possible abuse. The State Crime Branch is expected to question Satheesh in detail in the coming days. Officials said they will also seek further information from Sharjah authorities to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Athulya's death.

Over 5 mn devotees expected in Mathura for Janmashtami, security stepped up
The 5,252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna will be celebrated at midnight on August 16 in all major temples of Mathura, including the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple, and at the Thakur Bankey Bihari temple in Vrindavan. Nandgaon will mark the festivities on the night of August 17, officials said here on Sunday. District Magistrate Chandraprakash Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said that while around 4.2 million devotees visited Mathura during Janmashtami last year, the number is expected to cross five million this time. Preparations and security arrangements are being made accordingly at all pilgrimage centres, including Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Gokul, Nandgaon, Govardhan, and Mahavan. At the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple complex alone, 150 CCTV cameras have been installed, with over 100 more positioned in the surrounding areas. For the first time, AI-enabled drone cameras will also be deployed for surveillance, the officials said. Police personnel will be stationed across the city, especially at major temples and sensitive locations. Civic works such as cleaning, road repairs, beautification of routes, and decoration of intersections are being carried out on a war footing, the officers added. The Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad, which is organising the celebrations under the banner of Shri Krishnotsav', has planned a three-day festival from August 15 to 17. Vice-Chairman of the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority and ex-officio CEO of the Parishad, Shyam Bahadur Singh, said the festivities will begin on the morning of August 15 with a grand procession from the main gate of Shri Krishna Janmasthan to Potra Kund, Govind Nagar, and Deeg Gate, before returning to the starting point. The procession will combine devotional and patriotic themes, featuring about 250 folk artists from Braj, Bundelkhand, Rajasthan, and Haryana, performing traditional dances such as Bundelkhand's Rai, Rajasthan's Kachhi Ghodi, and Haryana's Gujri. Musicians will play nagaras, dhols, shehnais, damrus, and manjiras, while bhajan groups from various temples, including ISKCON Vrindavan and Man Mandir Barsana, will spread devotional fervour, he said. The management of the Bankey Bihari temple has urged devotees to avoid bringing the elderly, children, pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and patients suffering from blood pressure or diabetes to Vrindavan during Janmashtami, in view of the expected massive crowds and to prevent any untoward incidents.

Lawyer challenges her ex-IPS father's order dismissing UP cop, gets it overturned
In a rare courtroom face-off, a retired IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh found himself defending a police dismissal order — only to see it overturned by his own daughter, who appeared as counsel for the suspended case involved former Bareilly Range Inspector General (IG) Rakesh Singh and his lawyer daughter, Anura Singh. In January 2023, a 17-year-old girl travelling on the Triveni Express accused constable Taufiq Ahmad of molestation. A Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) case was filed on the complaint of the girl's father. While the lower court later acquitted Ahmad, the police department dismissed him from appeal against the dismissal was rejected by then Bareilly Range IG Rakesh Singh. Challenging this, Ahmad approached the Allahabad High Court, appointing advocate Anura Singh as his lawyer. In court, Anura argued that the departmental inquiry and dismissal order were flawed and did not comply with legal requirements. During proceedings, her father — the officer who had signed the dismissal order — was summoned to defend the department's action. While Rakesh Singh maintained that the departmental decision was justified, Anura highlighted procedural lapses and alleged injustice to her Allahabad High Court eventually quashed the departmental proceedings and ordered Bareilly Police to reinstate judgment, delivered in July this year, marked a professional win for Anura and a legal defeat for her father. Speaking after the verdict, Rakesh Singh said he was proud of his daughter for performing her duty as a lawyer. "I presented my case, she presented hers. For any father, this is a moment of pride," he said. - EndsMust Watch
