This Start-up Airline Just Unveiled a Luxe Business Class to Compete With Emirates
Unlike other cash-starved start-ups, Riyadh Air will have the backing of the Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which means extremely deep pockets to create a first-class experience at business-class rates. 'We want to bring back grace, beauty, and charm,' Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas tells Robb Report. 'We want a modern-day version of TWA or Pan Am at their height in the 1960s, like Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me if You Can, but with a modernistic twist.'

The executive team has taken a pedantic interest in meticulously crafting the image of the airline, from liveries that resemble a rock band's private jet, to the spiffy, almost futuristic crew uniforms it introduced at Paris Fashion Week.
But beyond the public-facing aircraft and staff, its business-class section is a tasteful collection of colors and materials, shaped into what Douglas calls a 'signature geometry' loosely inspired by a Bedouin tent that adds subtle curves across the business-class area. 'It has an obsessional level of detail throughout,' Douglas says. 'We believe the cabin is going to stand out from the crowd because of its elegance and refinement. We call it the art of design.'
The cabin's design by PriestmanGoode is full-out luxe in the business-class section, including the four Business Elite seats and 24 other Business seats. The lighting is subtle, and the details of the seating areas include rich-purple textures as well as indigo, mocha, skyline blue, lavender. The stitching in the upholstery is reminiscent of a supercar, and the mocha-hued stoned accents with gold veins in the side rests and tray tables deliver a tasteful, subtle blend with the overall design.
The Business Elite seats in the first row have two seats that can be combined into a double bed, and the section also features a 32-inch 4K OLED IFE screen, which Riyadh refers to as the 'world's largest business class screen,' compared to 22 inches in standard business. All seats are configured 1-2-1, with a seat width of 22.5 inches, a 78-inch fully flat bed, and 52-inch-high walls with sliding privacy doors.
The airline is particularly proud of the Safran Unity seats, which include built-in speakers from Devialet, to offer an immersive surround-sound experience in the headrest that doesn't travel to other seat areas. Riyadh will be one of the first to offer the ergonomically advanced Safran Unity seats, which made their debut in Japan Airlines's first-class section this year.
Riyadh is also calling itself the world's first 'digital-native' airline, which refers partly to free Wi-Fi across the cabin, via Viasat onboard streaming, but also to the customer experience of booking a flight.
'We wanted to be a start-up that embraces technology in a different way,' says Douglas. 'We're now in what we call our 2.0 version and will be releasing the 3.0 version in a few months. That will make us more like what you do with Amazon and its shopping basket.' The system will allow passengers to book as a single party as well as experiences at the destination like visiting a museum or art gallery.
The company declined to reveal its initial destinations until it opens its platform for booking at an undisclosed time, but Douglas says the list should include capitals of Western Europe and North America. Its central hub will be Riyadh.
The start-up eventually plans to have 100 destinations around the world as it transitions to the country's primary carrier. On an as-of-yet-unannounced aircraft type, Riyadh plans to introduce a first class section that is even more lavish than its business class.
The rise of a contemporary start-up airline coincides with Saudi Arabia's plan to expand its tourism base as the Kingdom attempts to move its image away from a wealthy but inward-focused country to a more modern, moderate version. The long-term goal is to supplement oil revenues with tourism. A recent report said that after opening its borders in 2019, Saudi Arabia has seen annual tourist visits growing from 17.5 million in 2019 to 30 million last year.

The Last Ferrari Daytona SP3 Just Sold for $26 Million
You never know how much someone will be willing to pay for another shot at their dream car. In the case of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, the answer is $26 million, according to Road & Track. That's how much the final example of the hypercar sold for at RM Sotheby's Monterey Car Week sale on Saturday evening. That price, which is more than seven times the pre-sale estimate, makes the vehicle the most expensive new Prancing Horse ever sold at auction. More from Robb Report This Hypersonic Space Plane Can Go From London to N.Y.C. in an Hour Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Moving to the Forest Lodge Within Windsor Great Park This $230 Million Superyacht Was Made for a Former Ukrainian Statesman. Now It's up for Grabs. The Daytona SP3 in question is called the 'Tailor Made' and is a one-off that was built after completion of the third Icona Serie model's 599-unit production had been completed (making it no. 599 + 1). The hypercar's sculpted exterior, inspired by the marque's legendary sport prototype race cars, features a unique two-tone livery. The paint job combines Giallo Modena with exposed carbon fiber and is bisected by a full-length Ferrari logotype, which had previously not been used on one of the company's road cars before. The interior is a bit more restrained, with black being the primary color, broken up only by yellow accents and a monotone racing flag motif. Untouched is the Daytona SP3's V-12, which we think everyone will agree is a good thing. The naturally aspirated 6.5-liter mill is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and makes 829 hp. The car can rocket from zero to 62 mph in under three seconds and reach a top speed of 211 mph. The SP3 was built and auctioned off with the specific goal of raising money for charity, but that doesn't make its final gavel price any less impressive. RM Sotheby's had announced that it expected the car to fetch more than $3.5 million, which is $1.25 million more than the Daytona SP3 cost originally. But when bidding was over, the winning bid came in at $26 million. Not only does that make it the most expensive new Ferrari sold at auction, but it also makes it the 13th most expensive car ever sold at auction. All proceeds from Saturday's sale will go to the Ferrari Foundation. The charity is focused on helping fund educational initiatives around the world. Most recently, the foundation made a significant contribution to help rebuild the Aveson Charter School in Altadena, California, which was destroyed by this year's Eaton of Robb Report The 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette: Everything We Know About the Powerful Mid-Engine Beast The World's Best Superyacht Shipyards The ABCs of Chartering a Yacht Click here to read the full article.

This Bugatti Divo Was Showcased at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Now It Could Fetch $9 Million.
When the 1,500 hp Bugatti Divo was named Robb Report's Best of the Best in the Hypercar category for 2019, we described it as 'a four-wheeled hyperbole . . . as elusive as it is superlative.' Those words are equally relevant today, as the Divo remains a milestone in combining straight-line performance with lateral dynamics. On August 15, one of the only 40 examples made will mark the model's debut at auction when it crosses the block through Bonhams|Cars. Nearly as noteworthy is that it's being offered without reserve. The car's coverage in our award-themed June/July print issue six years ago quoted Bugatti's then-president, Stephan Winkelmann, who stated, 'I wanted to test my team, and myself, to develop more emotional performance and a completely new design,' regarding the missive for developing the Divo. 'We wanted to highlight the sporty side.' More from Robb Report Rivian's New One-of-a-Kind R1S Quad Will Be Auctioned for Charity at Monterey U.S. Wine Exports to Canada Have Plummeted 97% Meet the Bugatti Brouillard, a New One-of-a-Kind Hypercar With its tremendous output coming from an 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 engine with 1,180 ft lbs of torque, the Divo has been engineered with a focus on cornering, which is why its top speed has been 'limited' to a still staggering 236 mph compared to the Bugatti Chiron's 261 mph max. What sets the Divo apart is its 1,005 pounds of downforce—198 pounds more than the Chiron—and lateral acceleration that can deliver 1.6 g. According to Bugatti's press release at the time, these all factor into the Divo beating the Chiron by eight seconds at the Nardò circuit in Italy. To realize this enhanced level of athleticism over the Chiron, the Divo's chassis, steering, and suspension were fine-tuned for greater responsiveness, and aerodynamic improvements included new front and rear diffusors and a wider, adjustable rear spoiler. Fittingly, the model's emphasis on control while being pushed to the extreme is reflected in the selection of its name, an homage to racer Albert Divo. A driver for the marque's factory team from 1928 through 1933, Divo won the Targa Florio endurance race back-to-back during that period. This example of the model has had only two stewards since leaving the factory in Molsheim, France. It has also been showcased at the Petersen Automotive Museum's 'Hypercars: The Allure of the Extreme' exhibition, which ran from December of 2021 until May of 2023. In 2024, it was acquired by the consignor, who has ensured that less than 800 miles have been put on the odometer in total. 'Here at Bonhams|Cars, we are delighted to be the first auction house globally to bring to market one of the rarest hypercars ever produced, the Bugatti Divo,' says Bonhams specialist Louis Frankel. 'It is incredibly rare that anyone ever has the opportunity to see one, let alone purchase one, so being able to bring this car to market is hugely exciting.' Yet this Divo is not the only exquisite automotive outlier that Bonhams|Cars will showcase at the Quail Auction during Northern California's upcoming Monterey Car Week. Among the over 100 lots being presented, the Divo is one of 24 cars comprising what Bonhams has dubbed the Future Classics Collection—contemporary apex automobiles—all being offered without reserve. Included in what's estimated to be a roughly $30 million assemblage is a 2021 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport expected to fetch up to $4.25 million, a 2017 Pagani Huayra Roadster with a high-end estimate of $3.6 million, and the 2022 Apollo Intensa Emozione 'Ocean Dragon' valued at between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. As for the Divo, though each had a starting price of $5.8 million when new, this pristine example is now expected to garner between $7 million and $9 million—its high-performance acumen seemingly extending to its return on of Robb Report The 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette: Everything We Know About the Powerful Mid-Engine Beast The World's Best Superyacht Shipyards The ABCs of Chartering a Yacht Click here to read the full article.
