Hitmen, Murder, And Plot Twist: Wife's Arrest In Meghalaya Couple Case Sparks Many Questions
Last Updated:
Sonam Raghuvanshi has been arrested on charges of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya. However, doubts remain over the exact motive behind the crime.
Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11 and arrived in Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon. A few days into their vacation, the Indore-based couple was reported missing, sparking a widespread search for the two.
As the state police swung into action, they found a decomposed male body lying in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Cherrapunji, June 2.
Before that, on May 22, Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi had arrived at Mawlakhiat village on a rented scooter. But the two-wheeler was found abandoned at a cafe along the road from Shillong to Sohra on May 24.
Suspicions of the man's murder arose after it was ascertained that the body was of Raja Raghuvanshi and that her wife, Sonam, was still missing. Later, the police learnt that a gold ring and neck chain, which Raja was reportedly wearing, were also missing.
Days into the investigations, the police have now arrested Sonam Raghuvanshi from Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, on charges of killing her husband. However, multiple questions on Raja Raghuvanshi's death remain unanswered.
According to the Meghalaya and the Uttar Pradesh Police, Sonam, who had been missing ever since Raja's body was found, hired killers to murder her husband. The police also said she has surrendered in the case.
However, if Sonam is believed to have killed Raja, the motive behind the act remains unknown.
It was also learnt that Sonam was aided by four others for the crime, out of whom Raj Kushwaha was believed to be her lover and that they both had known each other since before Sonam's marriage to Raja Raghuvanshi.
Questions also loom large on how Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered, and how, ones who aided Sonam in the crime, are known to her.
As the investigations into the case progressed, the police were also trying to establish how Sonam travelled from Meghalaya to Uttar Pradesh, from where she was arrested.
According to Idashisha Nongrang, Director General of Police, Shillong, Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly killed by three men hired by his wife during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, and that the revelation was made by the three after their arrest from Madhya Pradesh.
Nongrang also said Sonam surrendered in the case before the Uttar Pradesh Police and was subsequently arrested.
The DGP also said that some more persons were yet to be arrested in connection with the case.
RAJA RAGHUVANSHI's DEATH, AND THE THREE MEN
However, the mystery deepens as it is now suspected that Raja Raghuvanshi also knew the three men allegedly involved in the crime, after Albert Pde, a local guide in the state, told PTI that he saw the couple with three male tourists on May 23, the day Raja's body was found.
Albert Pde recalled offering to guide the couple a day earlier, but they had declined and hired someone else.
It was not established if the three men spotted with the Indore couple were the ones arrested in connection with Raja's death.
SONAM RAGHUVANSHI's FAMILY IN DISBELIEF
Meanwhile, the family of Sonam Raghuvanshi has sought a CBI probe into the case and has claimed their daughter's innocence, refuting all allegations against her.
Sonam's father, Devi Singh, also alleged that her daughter had been abducted, and was in the clutches of the captors.
He also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to help in the matter.
Sonam's mother, Sangeeta, while speaking to reporters, said her family was thankful that she had been found. She said her family wants to know who was behind their son-in-law Raja Raghuvanshi's murder.

Lucknow: Four people, a steel businessman, his wife, their daughter, and the driver, were killed in a high-speed car crash on the Jhansi-Kanpur highway near Khilli village late Wednesday. The businessman's father and three children were seriously injured in the accident and are currently undergoing treatment. The accident occurred when an XUV700 vehicle, travelling at an estimated speed of 80–90 km/h, lost control and rammed into a divider before overturning. The family was returning to Maharashtra after celebrating Bakrid in their hometown Siddharthnagar. The deceased have been identified as Ubaidur Rahman (43), a Maharashtra-based steel businessman, his wife Ashma (40), their daughter Usna Parveen (15), and their driver Amir (45). According to eyewitnesses, the impact was so severe that the vehicle was crushed, leaving all eight occupants trapped inside. Local residents, alerted by the cries for help, rushed to the spot and attempted to rescue the family. Driver Amir was found critically wedged between the steering wheel and bonnet. Despite frantic efforts and the arrival of a JCB machine to break open the car, Amir succumbed after nearly an hour of being trapped. Meanwhile, the injured — Ubaidur's father Shahbuddin (70), sons Abdullah Bahadur Rahman (10) and Aneedur Rahman (8), and daughter Eshya (6) — were rushed to a nearby Community Health Centre (CHC). Their condition is stated to be serious but stable. The bodies of the deceased were kept at the hospital morgue awaiting the arrival of family members. SP, Jhansi, BBGTS Murthy, said that preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have been caused by driver's fatigue. Ubaidur's friend Mahbulla, who was travelling in a separate vehicle towards Mumbai, said, "I was ahead of them in my car. I suspect the driver might have dozed off. I've informed the family — they're on their way." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
