Dundee to Arran road trip in the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid

The Courier11-06-2025
Want a car that's practical, economical, pleasant to drive and doesn't cost the earth? May I present to you the Kia Niro.
I write this shortly after returning from driving my test Niro from Dundee to Arran for a four-day family holiday, during which I developed a lot of affection for Kia's little SUV.
One great thing about it is there's a Niro for everybody. You can go for a hybrid petrol model on one end of the scale to a fully electric version at the other.
I tested the middle-ground model. The plug-in hybrid Kia Niro has a 1.6 litre petrol engine that's paired with a 11.1kWh battery and electric motor.
The result is a car that can cover up to 38 miles on battery power alone but has a petrol engine so there's no range anxiety or concern about finding a charger.
I plugged the Niro into the Ohme home charger I had installed a few months ago and topped it up ahead of our trip. A few hours later the battery was reading 100%.
A button allows you to set the car's mode to 'save' which preserves the battery charge until you want to use it.
This meant I didn't empty the battery blatting along the M77, where it wouldn't have added much efficiency. Instead I was able to drive through Troon, onto the Ferry, and halfway around Arran on pure electric power.
I could have filled up the battery at the charging station in Brodick but I didn't. Public charging costs three times more than I pay at home (and can be up to 10 times more if you're on an EV tariff at home). This made it at least as expensive as filling with petrol.
It's an efficient car, however. Ignore the official fuel economy figure of 314mpg – that's ludicrous. Over our Dundee-Arran trip we averaged 57mpg, which I was more than happy with.
After plugging in again back at home, where electricity it more affordable, I was able to pootle around Dundee using fully electric power.
This is where the car really can be run for pennies. If you have a cheap overnight tariff you'll pay 5-7p per unit, compared to 55-85p at public chargers. You can top up the Niro's modest battery for around 60p and enjoy 30-35 miles of real-world electric driving.
This is the second generation Niro and it has been redesigned from the ground up to have more interior space and better technology.
The new interior mimics that of the excellent Kia EV6. The materials are softer touch and higher quality than the previous version, and there are more gloss black and chrome details to enhance the upmarket feeling. A pair of screens swoop round from the centre of the dashboard to behind the steering wheel.
You get a mixture of dials and haptic buttons for the heating and media/navigation controls.
Frustratingly you can't have both at once – you need to toggle between the two systems using a little icon. It makes the dash less cluttered but I can't believe it's the most user-friendly system Kia could come up with. Still, it's better than dumping everything onto a touchscreen.
Although it has a modest footprint the Niro is a practical car. Leg and headroom are good in the front and back and the boot is a decent size. We were able to fit our baby daughter and our luggage on the back seats and our two golden retrievers in the boot.
As long as you're not expecting a hot hatch, the Niro drives well. A 9.8 second 0-62mph time doesn't endow it with blistering pace but it pulls strongly enough even when fully laden.
Ride and refinement are above average for the class and it's particularly quiet when in fully electric mode.
Prices for the Kia Niro start at around £30,000. There are three trim levels, which, inexplicably, are labelled 2, 3, and 4. My plug-in hybrid in 3 spec cost a very reasonable £37,865.
It came with plenty of kit, including heated seats, an electric driver's seat, and wireless smartphone charging.
Even entry level models get adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, keyless entry and a 10.3in touchscreen. My only real gripe is Apple CarPlay only works if you connect your phone with a cable – virtually all the Niro's rivals can connect wirelessly.
All Niros come with Kia's industry leading seven-year, 100,000 mile warranty.
Apart from a couple of very minor niggles the only thing to criticise the Niro for is that it's not terribly exciting. But it isn't meant to be. It's affordable, practical, cheap to run, well equipped, and should be reliable.
It is, in short, everything most people look for in a car.

Lucid Motors will showcase a rugged concept version of its Gravity SUV at Monterey Car Week, offering test drives and hinting at a more adventurous future for its luxury EV lineup. View post: Walmart Has a $290 Chest Freezer on Sale for 62% Off, and It's 'Just the Right Size' With its plush ride and surprisingly spacious interior, Honda's first all-electric SUV is a serious contender, but its grandeur isn't exactly blemish-free. Spiffed up and priced down The 2025 Hyundai Tucson is currently the 8th best-selling vehicle in America. It sold over 200,000 units last year, and that ranks it above the Kia Sportage and the Ford Escape, no small feat. It offers some of the most cutting-edge exterior styling, combined with a modern and tech-forward cabin that's jammed with standard features. For the 2025 model year, the Tucson received a nice, more SUV-like refresh with changes to the grille and bumpers. The cabin also received dual displays for higher trims, a new steering wheel, and improved physical controls for climate and audio. The 2025 model comes in five trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Convenience, XRT, and Limited. Prices start at $28,705 and top out at $38,645. Every trim level gets a blacked-out grille that blends the daytime running lights beautifully. The bumper has contrasting silver coloring, and the dramatically creased body sets it apart from the rest of the segment. Lower trims get a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. EPA estimates are 25 city, 33 highway, and 28 combined for front-wheel drive models with the base engine and 24, 30, and 26 for all-wheel drive models. The Tucson's main competitors include the aforementioned Sportage and Escape, as well as theHonda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. The front row provides 41.4 inches of legroom, and the second row delivers a substantial 41.3 inches of legroom. The cargo area has 41.2 cubic feet behind the second row and 80.3 with the seats folded flat, placing it at the head of the class. Final thoughts The 2025 Hyundai Tucson might be on the verge of a redesign, but the current generation remains stunning and modern thanks to its cutting-edge design and new facelift. Goodbye Kia Ceed! Popular hatch has been sensationally killed off in the UK

The Kia Ceed has been removed from sale in the UK, marking the end of almost 20 years on the market. A Kia spokesperson confirmed the news as the XCeed variant received an update for 2026 with new engines and equipment. While this crossover edition lives on, the Ceed in its hatchback guise, as well as the Sportswagon estate and ProCeed shooting brake, have ended production and sales. Kia said: 'The end of Ceed family production frees up our manufacturing plant in Zilina, Slovakia to produce the EV4 – Kia's first European-built EV – as we prepare to offer an electric C-segment hatchback for the first time. It also frees up space on the production line for EV2, which will be manufactured in Slovakia from early 2026.' Advertisement - Article continues below While Kia's all-electric range of EV-branded vehicles is growing, the Korean firm will maintain a spot in the internal combustion-engined hatch sector with the upcoming K4 - which we've already driven over in the US where it's already on sale. The Ceed first went on sale in 2006 – with the 'Cee'd' name – and quickly became a huge success for Kia, thanks to its industry-leading seven-year warranty, attractive pricing and solid build quality. Lotus was even involved in the original Cee'd's suspension tuning, although it was never a hot hatch by any means. While you can't buy a new Kia Ceed anymore you can check out the Auto Express Marketplace, where you'll find loads of great deals on used Ceeds, including the ProCeed and the Ceed Sportswagon. Having launched a year after the third and final generation of the Ceed, the XCeed will continue to be produced in Slovakia for the UK market. One of Kia's oldest models has had a refresh for 2026

The XCeed crossover SUV is one of the older models in Kia's line up having launched in 2019, but now it's been updated for 2026 with a new trim level range and even a couple of new engines. In 2022 the XCeed received its mid-life facelift with cosmetic tweaks including new lights, bumpers and wheels and this is all retained for the latest car with significant changes happening under the surface instead. Kia says the new XCeed is available to order now with first deliveries expected in September. First up there's a new mild-hybrid 1.0-litre 'T-GDi' engine replacing the old 1.5-litre unit. The 1.0-litre petrol engine produces 113bhp and 200Nm of torque, which is some way off the old 1.5-litre's 158bhp output. It's more frugal, however. Fitted with a six-speed manual, the new engine provides up to 47mpg, up from 44.8mpg. Advertisement - Article continues below Elsewhere there's a new 1.6-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with 177bhp and 265Nm of torque - providing a zero to 62mph time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. While the smaller 1.0-litre unit comes with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearboxes, the 1.6-litre unit only comes with the auto. There's no mention of a return for the plug-in hybrid that went off sale back in 2023. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Like the Picanto city car, which also gained an update for the 2026 model year, the XCeed's trim level structure has been re-jigged. Replacing '2' and '3' trims, the XCeed now kicks off with the 'Pure' from £25,165, rising to the 'GT-Line' from £26,565 and finally the GT-Line S from £31,215. Aside from the 177bhp engine only being offered on the GT-Line S, there are several differences between the trims in terms of equipment. The Pure gets all the same kit as the old '2' but gains some new additions such as; electric folding and heated door mirrors with LED indicators, rain-sensing wipers, black cloth and artificial leather seat upholstery, an electric driver's seat lumbar support, automatic air conditioning, paddle shifters (for the automatic only) and a selection of three drive modes. GT-Line adds bigger 18-inch wheels than the Pure's 16-inch rims, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats, sportier GT-Line design inside and out, tinted windows and adaptive cruise control. GT-Line S comes with a 12.3-inch driver's display to sit alongside the standard-fit 10.25-inch touchscreen, a wireless smartphone charger, an uprated sound system, panoramic sunroof, a powered bootlid, leather and suede upholstery and heated outer rear seats. For 'consistency across the range' Kia will add the new trim level structure to other models across its line up - whether they're pure-electric or not.
