‘Mohalla clinics promoted corruption, not public health': Delhi CM at launch of 33 Arogya Mandirs
Thirty-three Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) offering free basic healthcare services were inaugurated across Delhi's 70 Assembly constituencies by the Chief Minister and her Cabinet on Tuesday.
Launching the facility at Tis Hazari, CM Rekha Gupta said these centres would offer permanent, well-equipped infrastructure as compared to the temporary and limited mohalla clinics.
The government has plans to establish 1,139 AAMs across the Capital, with 15 centres in every Assembly constituency. 'The central government had sanctioned Rs 2,400 crore in health grants for Delhi, which went unused for the past five years. The current government has now started utilising that fund to build 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs,' Gupta said.
The AAMs will provide comprehensive healthcare under 12 service packages, including vaccinations for pregnant women, antenatal and postnatal care, mental health services, elderly care, and support for national health programmes like TB elimination, leprosy eradication, and non-communicable disease management.
They will also offer comprehensive OPD services and free consultations. In-house laboratory testing for basic diagnostic tests will also be available at these centres.
'The clinics will be staffed with qualified doctors, nurses, and lab technicians, and will provide preventive healthcare, family planning services, vaccinations, and essential medicines,' said Gupta.
Criticising the previous AAP government's mohalla clinic model, Gupta said it promoted corruption rather than public health — many mohalla clinics were built along roadside drains, staffed by untrained personnel, and relied on outsourced testing, which led to financial misappropriation. She also highlighted issues like excessive rent and how clinics became hotspots for anti-social activities.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh launched the clinic at Vikaspuri while Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa inaugurated the Ayushman Arogya Mandir in Chaukhandi.
Delhi PWD minister Parvesh Sahib Singh launched the facility at Babar Road. In Sarojini Nagar, his wife, Swati Singh Verm, inaugurated the Aarogya Mandir.
Discussing the launch of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, the CM said the new government has decided to establish them at all government hospitals. Seventeen centres were inaugurated Tuesday in 17 hospitals.
These facilities will operate under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra and offer affordable, quality medicines, medical equipment, and surgical items at 50%-80% lower than market rates. This initiative not only offers financial relief to patients but also creates employment opportunities for entrepreneurs, officials said.
Gupta also reaffirmed her government's goal of ensuring three hospital beds per 1,000 citizens in Delhi and promised that no Delhiite would be denied treatment due to lack of access.

Vivek Lal, director, PGIMER, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to redefine patient experience and hospital functioning, with the highlight being the announcement of a smart mobile application developed in collaboration with C-DAC Noida. The upcoming app will integrate real-time indoor mapping, QR code-based patient identification, and crowd management features to streamline hospital navigation and reduce wait times. 'This app will transform how we serve our patients and manage hospital systems. It is designed to make hospital visits smoother, more efficient, and patient-friendly,' stated Lal. He also shared significant progress on the institute's digital transformation journey, including the complete digitisation of the Hospital Information System, which now handles processes such as indenting and medicine procurement under schemes like Ayushman Bharat entirely online, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency. To ease payment systems, the effort is to introduce scan and share bill payments and online payments. The PGI director elaborated on the institute's robust infrastructure pipeline, led by the Rs-987 crore Sarangpur project that will house a new 100-seat medical college, modern OPDs for 16,000 patients, and a 200-bed emergency block. Additional developments include an all-weather swimming pool for staff and students, a trolley way to streamline patient transfers between high-traffic blocks, and a doctors' cafeteria soon to open on the fourth floor of A Block. 'When opened in July 1987, it had 10 seats and till now that has not changed, we are now going to have a new cafeteria with many amenities,' he added. Lal emphasised that the PGIMER is also addressing rising patient loads, especially in emergency and trauma care, by securing approval to recruit 300 ex-servicemen through outsourcing over the next four to five months to strengthen campus security. Additionally, 82 new faculty members have been recruited strictly as per DoPT norms, including EWS reservation, reinforcing the institute's commitment to transparency and meritocracy. The director spotlighted Project Sarathi — PGIMER's flagship NSS student-led patient navigation initiative. Now scaled across 34 states with over 6,400 active volunteers, the Sarathi based model has been green lit for expansion to 1,467 hospitals nationwide under reaffirming PGIMER's role in mobilizing youth for social commitment through compassionate care. The institute's focus on affordable healthcare also continues, with nine AMRIT stores accounting for 85 per cent of all medicine sales on campus, and a new AMRIT Pharmacy facility set to open near the Emergency Block to ensure uninterrupted access to subsidised medicines under Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY. The director further informed that the institute is set to operationalise the OPD of the upcoming Advanced Neurosciences Centre within three months, with equipment procurement under review. There was a proposal to procure an AI-enabled MRI machine for the centre, but due to budget constraints, the institute was told by the SFC to revisit the cost. 'The machines for the upcoming Mother and Child Centre have already been procured, and only 8 per cent of the work is now remaining, and the centre should be operational by early next year,' Lal added. Meanwhile, the construction of the Sarangpur satellite centre is progressing steadily, with completion expected in about three years. He also spoke about the Sangrur Satellite Centre of PGIMER, which now offers dialysis, cancer, gynaecology and gall bladder surgeries, knee replacements, with a designated bus stop here to help patients access the hospital. The director also lauded the medical team from the institute that included, doctors, nurses, paramedics and transport staff, for their exemplary courage in responding to the Jammu & Kashmir humanitarian crisis during Operation Sindoor. 'Every initiative, whether digital, structural, or social, is driven by a singular goal: to ease suffering, deliver equitable, high-quality care, and prepare our institution for the future, all while keeping the patient at the centre of everything we do,' Lal said.

RGUHS regional centre to be completed by Sept 2026
Mangaluru: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) regional centre will be completed by Sept, 2026, said Sharanaprakash Rudrappa Patil, minister of medical education and skills development. The foundation stone for the facility was laid in January, and the construction commenced two months ago. The total cost of the project is Rs 49 crore, and it will have a total of 1.3 lakh sqft area with skill labs, sports arena, and administrative facility. According to the current project plan, the basement will have parking and the centre office. The ground, first and second floors will have a skill lab each. The second floor will also have an auditorium. The third floor will be dedicated to indoor games and a gym. The fourth floor will have a multipurpose court for basketball, volleyball, and three badminton courts. "A total of 60,000 sqft is dedicated to the skill lab," Patil said, adding that similar regional centres have been completed in other parts of the state, like Kalaburagi and Davanagere. The original project plan included a swimming pool and a guest house facility. "The swimming pool is removed due to cost and safety reasons," said one of the officials in charge.

Training of 60,000 people begins for Int'l Yoga Day in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: A training covering more than 60,000 people across the district has commenced as part of the International Day of Yoga, which will be observed on June 21. District AYUSH officer Dr Mohammed Iqbal said preparations are being made for this year's International Day of Yoga in collaboration with the district administration, Ayush colleges, and yoga organisations. Yoga training programmes are being organised for the public by yoga organisations, AYUSH colleges, and Ayushman health centres in the district, he said. Under the Yoga Harit initiative, programmes involving environmental cleanliness and tree planting are being implemented alongside yoga practice. Under the Yoga Park initiative, a medicinal plant garden has been established at Ayushman Arogya Mandir, Balkunje, where daily yoga training is provided to the public. Meanwhile, under the Y-Break Yoga initiative, the district AYUSH department and Ayush colleges are organising yoga postures and pranayama training that can be done by employees/public while seated at their workplace. This helps employees who sit for long hours manage stress and boost enthusiasm at work. The AYUSH department is introducing a 5-minute yoga break during work hours, Dr Iqbal said. Further, competitions are being organised to convey the importance of yoga to students and youth and to demonstrate its benefits under the Yoga Unplugged initiative, he added.
