High school baseball: Beaver River comes through in clutch against South Jefferson
May 1—ADAMS — Credit Karter Kloster and the Beaver River baseball team for once again staying even-keeled while under pressure.
The Beavers generated timely pitching, clutch hitting as well as standout defense in its latest victory.

Kloster pitched two-plus innings of relief to record the win and also delivered a key hit down the stretch as Beaver River outlasted South Jefferson, 7-5, on Wednesday to win a Frontier League "A-B" Division game.
"A couple mistakes on both sides kind of gave us some runs and gave them some runs in that fifth inning and it was a battle," Beaver River coach Brandon DeLong said. "But I think we grinded, we were a little resilient and it paid off."
Kloster and starting pitcher Kade Schneider combined on a four-hitter for the Beavers, who remain unbeaten on the season at 6-0, including 3-0 in the league.
"He did awesome for those first four innings and then he got in a little trouble in the fifth," DeLong said of Schneider. "He pounded the zone, which was huge, and that's something we preach to him and preach to a lot of guys. And then Karter came in and pitched great."

"We're starting off pretty hot and we know we can get better," Schneider said, "So we're hoping we can keep on getting better and keep the hot streak going."
Defense set the tone for Beaver River on the day as center fielder Brit Dicob made a diving catch to deny Ryker Pennock of a hit in the second inning. Earlier, catcher Kayne Lyndaker threw out Billy Winchester at third base on a double-steal attempt in the bottom of the first inning.
"Beaver River is a good team, they're well coached," South Jefferson coach Kyle Peters said. "They're a fundamentally strong team, they play great defense. Brit Dicob had that nice stab there in center field and I think that really got them going."
Beaver River struck for two runs in the third inning as Lyndaker reached on a bunt single, placing the ball right in front of home plate, to load the bases.

Schneider then walked to drive in the first run and Kloster followed with an RBI groundout.
After South Jefferson drew within 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when Winchester reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a broken rundown play between first and second base, the Beavers responded with three more runs in the fourth.
Ethan Moshier singled to right-center field to drive in a pair of runs and Lyndaker singled in a run.
"We know they're good, they have some good hitters," Schneider said of South Jefferson. "But our middle lineup stepped up the last two times we played them and it feels good beating them."

The Spartans came back to tie the game with four runs in the fifth inning on a pair of sacrifice flyouts by Winchester and Drew Peters and RBI singles from Pennock and Russell Hazard.
Beaver River answered quickly with two decisive runs in the sixth inning on two-out RBI singles from Kloster and Dicob to reclaim the lead.
"Karter's only a sophomore, but he has a lot of composure out there and stays steady," DeLong said.
"Huge, they kind of got the momentum there for a little bit scoring four runs and then we knew we had to get the bats going," Schneider said. "So it feels good that we can stay resilient and just fight."

Kloster pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit while striking out two and walking none to close the door on South Jefferson.
"I felt pretty good, pretty confident," Kloster said. "I like pitching in those situations, it's fun."
"He's been our closer for the majority of the year so far and he's been doing a really good job of just bearing down, throwing strikes and letting the defense work," Schneider said of Kloster.
Schneider allowed five runs, with only one of them earned in 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out six and walking six.
"I felt good through the first couple innings and kind of slowed down at the end," Schneider said. "We have guys, we have a lot of arms, so I know if I slow down, then somebody can come in and finish it off."

"It was sure a battle against their lineup, everybody can hit," Schneider said. "I would say mixing up speeds, they're really good at hitting the fastball, so mixing in curve balls and changeups, just trying to hit spots."
Although they rallied to tie the score late in the game, it proved to be a rough day for the Spartans (2-5, 2-3), who committed five errors on the day.
"This time it was a comedy of errors that has become our season," Peters said. "These errors, not taking things seriously ... It's a different group of kids. The kids are working, but not as hard as we could be. A lot of undisciplined at bats and undisciplined defense. We battled pretty well, but we know we have to be better."
This is the second straight season that Beaver River, a Class C school, opted to play up in the league's "A-B" Division to ultimately prepare for the postseason.

Beaver River also swept South Jefferson in division play after defeating the Spartans, 6-4, on April 17 in Beaver Falls, in the Beavers' previous game.
"When we played them before break, that was the first time we've beaten them in three years, since the last time we won sectionals, so we had little bit of a lull with them," DeLong said. "They beat up on us pretty good last year, so getting that first one was great, but coming into this one we knew it was going to be a little more of a battle and it was."
South Jefferson had also hoped to be playing on its new turf field this season, but it hasn't been officially cleared to be utilized so far this year. Beaver River will continue league play within the division when it plays at Watertown at 5 p.m. today at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
"This is one of the best teams all around through the lineup, so it feels good that everyone's hitting and hopefully it can stay that way," Schneider said.

Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update
Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The longer that All-Star designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton remained on the injured list, the longer that young slugger Ben Rice got to stay in the New York Yankees' lineup. Rice's run as the Yankees' starting DH is nearing its final weeks, however. Stanton is finally nearing a return to the majors after a prolonged battle with tennis elbow in both arms; the five-time All-Star begins a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset. While Rice has been an impressive breakout star in his first full season, not even a propensity for mammoth home runs stands to keep him in the lineup. Rice enters Tuesday hitting .241 with 12 homers, 25 RBI, and a .825 OPS through 218 plate appearances. Rice ranks 34th among all qualified hitters in OPS, and his .497 slugging percentage is 24th in the league. Most teams would kill for production like that, but most teams aren't the Yankees. Stanton's contract all but guarantees him a spot as the Yankees' DH, and Paul Goldschmidt is enjoying an All-Star-caliber season at first base. That doesn't leave many at-bats for Rice, especially because the Yankees remain committed to Austin Wells at catcher. SNY's Andy Martino recently dismissed the idea the Yankees should demote Rice to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he can get regular at-bats. Martino instead proposed the Yankees work to play Stanton, Rice, and Goldschmidt at least two out of every three games. Martino also reported that the Yankees do not intend to play Rice anywhere but at catcher, first base, or designated hitter. "Rice is closer to gracing the cover of 'MLB: The Show' than he is to earning a trip to Scranton," Martino wrote. Either way, the Yankees find themselves in a difficult situation, one where there are too many hitters with too few at-bats to go around. It's better than the alternative, as teams like the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins know all too well. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared. Giants rally again to beat lowly Rockies 10-7 for 7th straight win
DENVER (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski's two-run double in the eighth inning keyed another San Francisco rally, and the Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 10-7 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight victory. Willy Adames homered and drove in three early runs for the Giants, but they trailed 6-3 entering the eighth before coming back against reliever Tyler Kinley (0-3). Adames, Heliot Ramos and Dominic Smith singled to load the bases with one out, and Casey Schmitt walked to bring in a run. Yastrzemski then lined a double off the right-center wall to tie it. Tyler Fitzgerald laid down a bunt against Zach Agnos, and Schmitt slid around the tag of catcher Hunter Goodman with the go-ahead run. Schmitt was initially ruled out but the call was overturned following a replay review. San Francisco added three insurance runs in the ninth on Wilmer Flores' sacrifice fly, and RBI singles by Schmitt and Yastrzemski. Goodman hit his 11th homer in the bottom half to give him three hits and two RBIs, but the major league-worst Rockies fell to 12-55 with their fifth straight defeat. Tristan Beck (1-0) tossed three innings of relief for the win. San Francisco's previous eight games were decided by one run and its six prior wins came by that margin, one shy of the major league record for consecutive victories all by one run set by the 1927 Chicago Cubs. Key moment Colorado had two runners on when Orlando Arcia grounded back to closer Camilo Doval for the final out. Key stats The 1988 Atlanta Braves were the last team to play nine straight one-run games. ... San Francisco has 17 wins this year after trailing by multiple runs. The only other teams since 1901 to do that in the first 68 games of a season were the 2000 Rockies (17) and 1979 Orioles (18). Up next ___

Wilmington rallies past Spartanburgers
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Spartanburgers and Blue Rocks needed extra innings for the second straight night. Just like Tuesday, Wilmington (26-33) pulled out a one-run victory, 6-5, over Hub City (30-28). Cal Stark and Gleider Figuereo both mashed solo home runs. Figuereo became the first Spartanburger with double-digit home runs (10) on the season. After a sluggish night for both sides at the plate on Tuesday, Hub City hopped on the board early on Wednesday. Keith Jones II and Stark both scorched RBI doubles in addition to a run-scoring groundout from Yeison Morrobel. Hub City took a 3-0 lead after the first frame. Despite some traffic, Spartanburgers starter Aidan Curry managed to last two outs into the fourth inning without allowing a run. Wilmington got on the scoreboard in the fifth with back-to-back doubles from Cortland Lawson and Caleb Lomavita. Stark responded in the sixth with a solo home run to retake a three-run lead. An out later, Wilmington starter Travis Sthele finished his night with his only strikeout. Hub City added on in the eighth when Figuereo left the yard to right. Dylan MacLean took over in the sixth out of the bullpen for Hub City. After a leadoff base hit, MacLean set down the next nine batters he faced. Hub City held a 5-1 lead into the ninth. Five straight walks came back to bite the Spartanburgers. Wilmington scored four runs without a hit to tie the game. All Hub City mustered at the plate in the ninth off Yeuris Jimenez (W, 3-2) was a walk. In the top of the 10th, Teo Banks led the inning off with a single to put runners at the corners. Josh Mollerus (L, 6-1) rolled a double play, but the automatic runner scored to give Wilmington its first lead of the night. Samuel Vasquez (S, 2) stranded a Hub City runner at second to finish off the win for the Blue Rocks in the bottom half. After dropping the first two games of the series, Hub City sends RHP Kolton Curtis (2-1, 5.19 ERA) to start game three. Wilmington will start RHP Travis Sykora (1-0, 1.38 ERA).
