Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested a clerk at Balrampur Court for his alleged association with Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba, the mastermind behind an illegal religious conversion syndicate.
Rajesh Upadhyay, the accused, was arrested from Chinhat for allegedly providing court-level assistance and funding to Chhangur, making him the sixth associate of Chhangur to be apprehended.
ATS sources said that during interrogation, Rajesh confessed to misusing his position to secure court relief for Chhangur in multiple cases. Chhangur faces charges under various sections, including sedition, fraud, inciting hatred among communities and violations of the anti-conversion law.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) previously conducted raids on 12 locations linked to Chhangur in Balrampur.
The ATS revealed that Rajesh's wife Sangeeta is connected to a Rs 16 crore property deal in Pune, which is under investigation for potential links to hawala transactions and conversion activities. Earlier, the ED had conducted raids on Rajesh's properties in Lucknow.
Sangeeta is also named in agreements for two properties in Balrampur.

Investigations by the ATS and ED have uncovered evidence of transactions totalling around Rs 8 lakh in Rajesh's bank account, tied to the Chhangur syndicate. Additionally, probes revealed the Chhangur gang filed lawsuits against opponents, with Rajesh's involvement in these cases coming under scrutiny.
Probe also revealed that Rajesh also assisted other accused in advancing their cases in the court. The ATS and ED were probing Chhangur's illegal transactions and properties when they discovered the Pune land deal, leading to Sangeeta's involvement. Subsequent transactions in Rajesh's accounts prompted further investigation by the agencies.
Originally from Varanasi, Rajesh owns a lavish bungalow in Lucknow and was living in a rented house in Balrampur.

In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, he said his resignation will be effective immediately — 'to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance wills Article 67(a) of the constitution,' his letter read. In March, Dhankhar was admitted at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences following 'cardiac-related ailments'. Last month, he had fainted while attending the Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Kumaon University. Jagdeep Dhankar Resigns: In his letter, he thanked the President 'for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure'. 'I express my deep gratitude to the Hon'ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister's cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,' the letter read. It is important to note that Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation comes at a time when the Monsoon Session of Parliament is underway. In such a situation, it becomes important to understand how the Vice President is elected. Vice President's Election: To elect the Vice President of India, only Members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participate. Nominated members also take part in this election. In contrast, during the Presidential election, voting is done by Lok Sabha MPs and MLAs from all state assemblies. Vice President Elections: Eligibility To contest the election for the post of Vice President, a person must be a citizen of India. They must be over 35 years of age Fulfill all the qualifications required to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. A candidate contesting for the Vice President's post must also deposit Rs 15,000 as a security deposit. This amount is forfeited if the candidate loses the election or fails to secure one-sixth of the total votes. How is voting conducted in the Vice Presidential election? In the Vice Presidential election, members of both Houses of Parliament participate. 245 members of the Rajya Sabha and 543 members of the Lok Sabha. Among the Rajya Sabha members, 12 are nominated MPs who also take part in the voting. The Vice President is elected through the Proportional Representation System using a special method called the Single Transferable Vote System. During voting, each voter casts only one vote, but they are required to rank the candidates in order of preference. On the ballot paper, the voter must mark their first preference as 1, second as 2, and so on. Jagdeep Dhankar is the third Vice President to resign before completing his term. Earlier, VV Giri stepped down from the Vice Presidency in July 1969 to contest the presidential election following the death of President Zakir Husain. After being elected as president, R Venkataraman resigned as Vice President in July 1987. He had served as Vice President from August 1984 to July 1987 and went on to hold the presidency until July 1992.

BRS braces for local body polls; to hold key workers' meets soon

Hyderabad: The BRS leadership commenced preparations for the local body elections on Monday, announcing that constituency-level key workers' meetings would begin this week. BRS Working President KT Rama Rao has called for the party to expose alleged Congress failures. These meetings aim to highlight the purported deceit of the Congress government while simultaneously drawing attention to the BRS's public agitations over the past 20 months. Rama Rao instructed party leaders to centre their discussions on the Congress government's shortcomings, including alleged betrayals against farmers and various sections of society. Discussions will also address the perceived collapse of governance and sanitation in villages due to the incompetence of the Revanth Reddy-led administration. In light of court orders indicating that local body elections may be held soon, KTR instructed party cadre to prepare rigorously. District party presidents have been tasked with coordinating these meetings in every constituency. The gatherings will see participation from BRS MLAs, MLCs, MPs, ZP chairpersons, former corporation chairpersons, and senior state committee members. KTR called for widespread public awareness campaigns to highlight the Congress government's failure to fulfil promises, its alleged corrupt and undemocratic practices, and its governance lapses. He emphasised exposing the government's neglect of farmers, including the non-implementation of the Rythu Bandhu scheme, and its failure to address shortages of urea and seeds. He also criticised the government's inaction on irrigation and power supply issues affecting farmers over the past 20 months. KTR urged party workers to inform the public about the Congress government's perceived lack of sincerity in implementing the promised 42 per cent reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) and its deceptive tactics through ordinances. He also highlighted unfulfilled Congress promises, such as the Rs 4,000 pension for the elderly, Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women, and other commitments across various sectors. He directed party workers to remind the public of the BRS's sustained public agitations and protests against the Congress government over the past 20 months, instructing that these constituency-level meetings be organised across the state this week to effectively mobilise key workers. Meanwhile, the party's senior leader T Harish Rao addressed a meeting of workers in Gajwel, the constituency of BRS president K Chandrashekar Rao. Harish Rao stated that, according to a recent survey, the party is projected to win 16 to 18 Zilla Parishads in the State. He urged party workers to collaborate as a family, cautioning against overconfidence. 'There should be confidence but there should be no overconfidence. You have to explain to the people how Telangana was and how it turned out now,' said Harish Rao. He encouraged party leaders to expose the Congress on its failures in implementing promised schemes, including Rythu Bandhu and the Rs 2,500 for women.
