Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar Resigns from his post
New Delhi: In an unexpected move, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar on Monday evening resigned from his post citing health issues. In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, he said his resignation will be effective immediately — 'to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance wills Article 67(a) of the constitution,' his letter read.
In March, Dhankhar was admitted at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences following 'cardiac-related ailments'. Last month, he had fainted while attending the Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Kumaon University. Jagdeep Dhankar Resigns:
In his letter, he thanked the President 'for her unwavering support and the soothing wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure'. 'I express my deep gratitude to the Hon'ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister's cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,' the letter read.
It is important to note that Jagdeep Dhankar's resignation comes at a time when the Monsoon Session of Parliament is underway. In such a situation, it becomes important to understand how the Vice President is elected. Vice President's Election:
To elect the Vice President of India, only Members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participate. Nominated members also take part in this election. In contrast, during the Presidential election, voting is done by Lok Sabha MPs and MLAs from all state assemblies. Vice President Elections: Eligibility To contest the election for the post of Vice President, a person must be a citizen of India.
They must be over 35 years of age
Fulfill all the qualifications required to be elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
A candidate contesting for the Vice President's post must also deposit Rs 15,000 as a security deposit.
This amount is forfeited if the candidate loses the election or fails to secure one-sixth of the total votes. How is voting conducted in the Vice Presidential election? In the Vice Presidential election, members of both Houses of Parliament participate.
245 members of the Rajya Sabha and 543 members of the Lok Sabha.
Among the Rajya Sabha members, 12 are nominated MPs who also take part in the voting.
The Vice President is elected through the Proportional Representation System using a special method called the Single Transferable Vote System.
During voting, each voter casts only one vote, but they are required to rank the candidates in order of preference.
On the ballot paper, the voter must mark their first preference as 1, second as 2, and so on.
Jagdeep Dhankar is the third Vice President to resign before completing his term. Earlier, VV Giri stepped down from the Vice Presidency in July 1969 to contest the presidential election following the death of President Zakir Husain.
After being elected as president, R Venkataraman resigned as Vice President in July 1987. He had served as Vice President from August 1984 to July 1987 and went on to hold the presidency until July 1992.

Delhi: Govt bodies owe Rs 63,019 crore in pending water bills. Here are the biggest defaulters

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been incurring losses due to a huge backlog of unpaid dues. Government data reveals that the state and central government bodies owe more to the DJB than domestic consumers. Among these, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Railways top the list of government bodies with the highest pending water bills. Water Minister Parevsh Sahib Singh said that 'water is a shared responsibility, and ensuring its uninterrupted supply requires collective effort. Resolving these financial bottlenecks will significantly strengthen our capacity to maintain and improve the city's water infrastructure'. 'We are committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure timely solutions in the best interest of every Delhi resident,' the minister added. According to officials, the DJB will be writing to the state and central government departments, including hospitals, Delhi Police, and others, asking them to pay their pending bills or adjust them. Data shows that the government departments' unpaid bill stands at Rs 63,019.2 crore — Rs 33,295.79 crore is the state government's share, and Rs 29,723.37 crore is the central government's dues. Among the state government's dues, the MCD tops the list — its dues stand at Rs 26,147 crore, followed by the state health department at Rs 66,84.6 crore. In the Central government, as per data, the Railways has a huge pendency of unpaid water bills — Rs 21,530.5 crore. It is followed by the Delhi Police, whose pending dues are Rs 6,097 crore. Meanwhile, residents owe the DJB Rs 1.42 lakh crore in pending water bills, officials have said. Of this, domestic consumers only owe the board Rs 15,000 crore, or 10.5% of the total amount. Officials said that consumers in the commercial category owe the DJB Rs 66,000 crore, followed by government departments, whose unpaid bills stand at Rs 63,019 crore, while domestic consumers owe the board Rs 15,000 crore. The government is already working on a one-time scheme to waive the late payment surcharge (LPSC) of water bills of domestic consumers. Officials said the status of pending bills is up to July 14, and these bills have been adding up over the last 10 years.

$565m credit line for Maldives, talks on free trade pact

PM Modi and President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu (Pic credit: AP) The turnaround in India-Maldives ties in the past 10 months - following the acrimonious removal of Indian military personnel from the strategically located country - seemed complete as India announced a fresh $565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Indian Ocean neighbour and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. As President Mohamed Muizzu hosted PM Modi for the latter's first visit to the country under his presidency, receiving Modi at the airport, both sides affirmed their commitment to a bilateral investment pact and a free trade agreement, for which the terms of reference were finalised. Seven MoUs and agreements were signed. Muizzu had invited Modi as the guest of honour for the Maldivian independence day celebrations. India had extended an $800 million LoC in 2019 under the previous pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party govt but on this occasion the LoC is in Indian currency (Rs 4,850 crore). PM: India & Maldives will soon finalise an investment treaty The president said after his meeting with Narendra Modi it will be used for priority projects in defence, healthcare, education and housing. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said Muizzu reiterated the Maldives's condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Muizzu has been seen as a pro-China leader in the past because of his association with the India Out campaign while in the opposition, and his insistence on driving out Indian military from the archipelago after taking over as president in Nov 2023. Muizzu travelled to India in Oct last year for an official visit, during which he said Maldives would do nothing to hurt India's security interests and would prioritise the relationship. The leaders then launched a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership to resuscitate the relationship. Modi said India is proud of the fact that it's Maldives's most reliable partner and that for India, it's always friendship first. "To give a new impetus to our development partnership, we have decided to provide a line of credit of $565 million, or approximately Rs 5,000 crore, to Maldives. It will be used for projects related to infrastructure development in line with the priorities of the people of Maldives," said Modi, calling the relationship older than history and as deep as oceans. One of the agreements signed is expected to bring down Male's annual LoC debt repayment from $51 million to $29 million. Modi said that both countries will soon finalise a bilateral investment treaty and their target now is "from paperwork to prosperity", adding a local currency settlement system under discussion will facilitate trade. There was focus on defence and security cooperation as the new defence ministry building built with Indian assistance was inaugurated. Asked whether there was any discussion about China, Misri said in a press briefing that India continued to work very closely with the Maldives on any issue that might "impinge on not just our security but our common security in this region that we share". Modi will participate in the independence day celebrations on Saturday and meet political functionaries. The visit saw the leaders virtually inaugurating a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six high impact community development projects in other cities.
