This Coen Brothers comedy is an underrated Netflix movie to watch this weekend (August 1-3)

Burn After Reading (2008)
One of the Coen brothers' less celebrated films, in part because it came in the immediate wake of No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading tells the farcical story of two gym employees who try to blackmail a former CIA analyst after they stumble upon classified information.
Along the way, we see just how stupid many of the people who work in the government are and how their bumbling lives intersect with occasionally deadly consequences. Burn After Reading is deeply funny, but it's also a movie about the people who run our country and how fundamentally pathetic most of them are.

American Graffiti (1973)
A movie made in 1973 that looks backward to an even earlier time, American Graffiti is one of the definitive teen movies, even if it's not George Lucas' crowning achievement.
The film follows a group of friends who all have different adventures on the last night of summer vacation before they go off to school or to find gainful employment. The movie itself is mostly lighthearted, but it's also a wistful look at a particular moment in life when things don't feel totally real yet, and you can do anything you want.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Aaron Sorkin's directorial career has been fascinating and strange, but there's a lot to like in The Trial of the Chicago 7. Based on true events, the film follows the trial of seven defendants who were a part of countercultural protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The movie's at its best when it's exploring the tension between the various groups within this trial. The trial reminds us how close these events truly are to the present day. Although the writing is definitely flowery in an Aaron Sorkin way, the movie is compelling throughout, in part because courtroom dramas are such a sturdy formula.

'Fantastic Four' stretches lead to 2nd week at N.America box office
"The Fantastic Four: First Steps," Disney's debut of the rebooted Marvel Comics franchise, continued to outperform the competition for a second straight weekend at the North American box office, industry estimates showed Sunday. Actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn star as the titular team of superheroes, who must save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus. The film pulled in an estimated $40 million in the Friday-through-Sunday period, a 66 percent drop from the prior weekend, for a two-week global total of $368 million. Universal's family-friendly animation sequel "The Bad Guys 2," about a squad of goofy animal criminals actually doing good in their rebranded lives, debuted in second spot, earning $22.2 million. "This is a good opening for an animation follow-up sequel," said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. The film edged out Paramount's reboot of "Naked Gun," a slapstick comedy starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr, son of the bumbling police lieutenant from the original 1980s movie and related television series "Police Squad!" It pulled in $17 million in its opening weekend. "Superman," the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped from second to fourth at $13.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said. That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, at $551 million. "Jurassic World: Rebirth" -- the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga -- finished in fifth place with $8.7 million. Its worldwide total stands at $765 million after five weeks in theaters. Independent horror film "Together," which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by Neon, claimed sixth spot in its debut weekend with $6.8 million. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' keeps roaring at the box office with ticket sales clearing the $750 million milestone over the weekend. Universal's dinosaur tentpole, which rebooted the pre-historic series with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali at the helm, has grossed $766 million globally after five weekends of release. It's one of three Hollywood films this year — Disney's 'Lilo & Stitch' ($1 billion) and Warner Bros. 'A Minecraft Movie' ($955 million) are the other two — to clear the $750 million mark so far. International audiences have been particularly enthusiastic, with overseas revenues contributing a massive $448 million to the total bounty. United Kingdom and Ireland ($42 million), Mexico ($34 million) and Germany ($28 million) rank as the top-earning territories. MGK Was Supposed To Be A Vampire In Sinners
Machine Gun Kelly apparently had the chance to audition for a vampire role in Ryan Coogler's runaway 2025 hit movie Sinners, but he turned it down for one solid reason. On the Aug. 1 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the "Cliche" singer explained that he declined to audition for the movie, which became a commercial success, when he learned that a racial slur would be used. MGK was not down to say the n-word. Straight up. "Like 'Sinners,' I was supposed to be in that," MGK said. "The vampire, they had me set up to do the audition — it's the one that's in the house, so he's the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and eats the family. In the audition, he has to say the 'n-word' and I wouldn't do it." Sinners premiered on April 18, 2025, and featured actors Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, and more. MGK is likely talking about Bert, the KKK member turned vampire portrayed by Peter Dreimanis. The character and his wife, Joan (Lola Kirke), were made vampires by Remmick (Jack O'Connell). One audition turned down isn't going to keep MGK from pursuing acting. "I have a lot of aspirations to be in movies, it just hasn't panned out that way," he said. "I'm on universal timing," MGK explained, before adding, "It'll align. The angels will put something in the works." "There's been plenty of movies that come out that I was like, ah, I was supposed to be in that, or I did auditions for that." MGK, under his real name Colson Baker, has starred in several films throughout the years outside of his music projects. He had a part in the Netflix movies Project Power (2020) and Birdbox (2018), as well as the Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt as Tommy Lee.
