Joe Root opens up on chasing Sachin Tendulkar for most Test runs: ‘He made his Test debut before I was born'
Starting the fourth Test against India at fifth spot, Root jumped three positions to be placed just behind Tendulkar to become the second-highest run scorer in Tests. On his way to 13409 runs, Root surpassed Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ponting and is just 2512 behind Tendulkar's tally of 15921.
Asked about chasing Tendulkar for the record, Root stated it's not something the England stalwart will focus on. 'Those sorts of things should look after themselves," Root told BBC. "The focus has to be about winning games… He made his Test debut before I was born.
"To be playing on the same ground as him and to get the chance to play against him was incredibly cool. (He was) someone you grew up watching, admiring, trying to learn from… To get to play in a series where he was still playing was really quite a memorable experience that I'll never forget," added the right hander.
Earlier on Friday, former England captain and currently a cricketer-turned-expert, Michael Atherton asserted that Root can reach Tendulkar if he continues in the same form in the next two-three years.
'You never know what lies ahead in terms of freak injuries, sport can be a cruel mistress, but given a fair wind he should be up to Tendulkar in around two and a half years,' Atherton told Sky Sports.
Riding high on Root (150) and captain Ben Stokes' (141) hundreds, England were all out for 669 in reply to India's first innings total of 358. However, India lost both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks. Currently, KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill are in the middle, fighting for the visitors to save the Test match.

Jasprit Bumrah playing fifth Test would be "great deal for us", says Gill
MANCHESTER: India captain Shubman Gill said it would be a big deal for the team if pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah manages to play series-deciding fifth Test despite the team's original plan to restrict him to three matches. Bumrah, who suffered a stress reaction earlier in the year, was initially scheduled to feature in only three Tests on the long England tour to manage his workload and prevent further injuries. He missed the second Test at Edgbaston but played in the other three. With England leading the series 2-1 after a draw in Manchester, India must win at The Oval to level the five-match contest. "If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told BBC's 'Test Match Special'. "If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack," Gill added. Bumrah bowled 33 overs in the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has approximately four and a half days to recover for the final match, which begins on July 31. He has bowled 119.4 overs in five innings across three Test matches so far, which is roughly 24 overs per innings. However, given that he is India's joint highest wicket-taker in the series with 14 scalps (with Mohd Siraj), including two five-wicket hauls from three matches, the team may be tempted to bring him back for the finale.

Starting their second innings 311 runs in arrears after England racked up a massive first-innings total, Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar struck excellent hundreds to bail their team from the brink of defeat and remain in contention to level the five-match series.
