Celtic new boy in nod to Jock Stein with famous line as he admits 'that's why I signed'
The Swede looked slick in the win at Pittodrie and was front and centre of the supporters' celebrations after the final whistle
Benjamin Nygren celebrates with Kieran Tierney
He might have clocked the quote on the statue in front of Celtic Park and stuck in the back of his mind for later use.

Then again, it might just be a sentiment he shares.

But, either way, Benjamin Nygren rolling out the famous line from club immortal Jock Stein about football being nothing without fans was a decent way to endear himself to supporters.

Not that he needed any fancy PR tricks after his performance at Pittodrie.
The silky Swede helped swat the Dons aside in Sunday's 2-0 victory in the north east to maintain his side's unbeaten start to the defence of their Premiership crown.
Nygren's first goal for Celts was a touch of clash when he swept up Kieran Tierney's pinpoint cross into the bottom corner.

The playmaker topped off the win by teeing up Reo Hatate for a sublime second and his all-round display had Hoops fans well and truly won over.
By the end Nygren was leading the celebrations in the away end – lapping up the kind of magical moment he signed up for when he landed on a £1.7m robbery job from Nordsjaelland.
He then went Jock of the north and said: 'I've said it many times, for me football is nothing without fans. It's a huge part of Celtic, that's why it's such a big club, because the fan base of Celtic is one of the best in the world. It was so nice to celebrate the goal and, of course, most importantly, the win with them.

'Of course that kind of moment was one of the reasons I signed for Celtic.
'But I think Celtic has everything and everything I look for. That's why I came.'
Nygren didn't need Stein's famous fan line to cosy up to punters as he'd already won them over with his Dons display.

He said: 'I cannot take too much credit for the assist! Reo smashed into the top corner, so it was a brilliant finish.
'I was very happy with the first goal. It was a perfect cross from Kieran. I put it in, celebrated with the fans and the team, so it was amazing.'

There's been plenty of talk about what Celtic need in this transfer window – but the midfield is an area stacked with quality.
The Hoops had £11m Arne Engels on the bench on Sunday, alongside £3.5m Paulo Bernardo and smash hit Luke McCowan, while Callum McGregor and Hatate were in the starting line-up.
Nygren already looks to have nailed down his place but he knows there's going to be a heck of a fight to stay there.

He said: 'Yes, I didn't come here to not play. Of course, I came here to try to come in fast and show my abilities in training and training games. Of course, I came here to help the team win games.
'That's my mentality. There is competition but that is part of football, that's how it is in big clubs.
"It would be weird if there were only 11 good players in such a big team as Celtic.

'I think we have 25 or 30 good players in Celtic, but only 11 can start the game. It's a very long season.
'Now we've only played our two first games, so we will need a lot of players, a lot of good quality players. I think we have that.
'In terms of my position, I think it's preferable like I started the game on Sunday.

'But I'm a player that has played a lot of positions. For me, I don't think too much of the positions. It's football, you need football intelligence.'

There's no doubting Nygren's football IQ but it's a different score he has on his mind – topping his impressive goal tally from last term.

The attacker bagged 15 for Nordsjaelland and another couple for Sweden to earn rave reviews in Denmark and in his homeland and he's determined to kick on again this season.
He came close to nabbing one on his full debut at Parkhead on Flag Day against St Mirren but Hoops fans have already seen what the 24-year-old can bring to the party.
Nygren can burst into the box from deep, float in from the flank or pick passes in behind.

It's early days but he's already picking up the kind of positions £25m man Matt O'Riley used to occupy for the side.
He had a couple of other opportunities at the weekend too and Nygren is out to be a major part of the Parkhead attack.

He said: 'It was amazing to make my official debut at Celtic Park. It's something I've visualised since I signed for the club. It was an amazing feeling and I can't wait to play many more games.
'I could have scored last week but that's part of football. Sometimes keepers make good saves and that's how it is.
'It's part of my game, that's also why I scored many goals last season. I can run a lot, so I always come a little bit from behind.
Article continues below
'That's how I want to play. I can run a lot so I want to be involved as much as possible and help the team to win, so I was very pleased with my performance and the team's performance.
'Can I score as many as last season? Everything is possible.'

Premiership boss considered leaving before takeover

Martindale had a central role at Livi even before taking over as manager in 2020 and has had to deal with a number of off-field issues involving previous owners and finances. Those problems were swept away when American Ford took majority control in May, just before Martindale led his team to promotion back to the William Hill Premiership with a play-off win over Ross County. Ford spoke on Monday about his plans to make Livi a 'disruptive' force in Scottish football and has put his faith in Martindale to lead the football side. 'I'll be honest, when we were sitting on Zoom calls in February, March, whenever it was, my head was 'I need to try and take the club back to the Premiership and maybe look elsewhere for my career',' the Lions manager said. 'And Calvin just came in and kind of rejuvenated me. Also, it rejuvenated the staff, it just gave everyone in the football club a massive lift because the previous years were difficult. 'Taking the club back to the Premiership with the old regime, it wouldn't have been ideal. It would have just been pushing water up a hill again. 'And then Calvin's come in, there's just been a real fresh impetus, everybody, staff, upstairs, downstairs and I think that comes from his enthusiasm, his passion, his desire. 'Before we got back to the Premiership, his words to me, I remember sitting in the hotel room in Ross County and a text message came through and goes, 'look Davie, don't think you have to take the club back to the Premiership. Read more: 'It would be great, but I'm here through the good and the bad times and I'll be here if you're in the Championship'. 'And maybe that helped me make better decisions in the dugout, so it's just been a breath of fresh air to be honest.' Martindale added: 'Once we knew that Calvin was fully on board and it was going to get done, I think I had a better night's sleep than I had for the last two or three years to be honest. 'You've now got an upstairs looking after the upstairs. 'Being able to come into work and be the first-team manager of Livingston Football Club, this is the first time proper I've had that opportunity as a football manager. 'So I'm now fully focused on the football side, where historically I wasn't. Historically I couldn't be, it was just impossible. 'I never wanted a lot of the stuff that fell on my desk, but I got it through default because I was the only one that was here at the football club at that point.' Ford stated that Martindale reminded him of himself with his passion and care for the club. Martindale said: 'I think he sees the resilience. We're robust, we'll fight, we'll kick, we'll scream and we'll claw our way back to the Premiership and that's kind of what we've done. 'Hopefully that's what he's meaning in terms of the personality traits, in terms of the will to win – never give up.'

A round-up of the latest Scottish football transfer rumours, stories and gossip, including the latest news from Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen and Dundee United. Luca Stephenson is set to re-join Dundee United this month. | SNS Group Liverpool 'decide move' for youngster Liverpool are ready to allow Luca Stephenson to re-join Dundee United this summer, after he was left out of the squad for Sunday's Community Shield shootout defeat to Crystal Palace. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Tannadice, playing 31 times in the Scottish Premiership as Jim Goodwin's side qualified for a spot in the Conference League qualifiers with a fourth-placed finish. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Stephenson, who won the club's Young Player of the Season award last year, is now closing in on a return to Tannadice, with The Athletic's James Pearce claiming Arne Slot has sanctioned another season-long loan move for the Sunderland-born midfielder. However, there is understood to be no option to make the deal permanent for the youngster, with the Anfield giants set to agree a new long-term contract with Stephenson, who entered the final year of his current deal last month. Swansea City, Reading and Rotherham United are all said to have explored a loan deal for the player, while Aberdeen had been linked with a permanent bid, but it is Dundee United who look to have won the battle for his signature. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is closing in on the signing of Kenan Bilalovic this summer. | SNS Group Aberdeen 'agree deal' Aberdeen head coach Jimmy Thelin is closing in on the signing of Swedish winger Kenan Bilalovic after the club agreed a fee of £500,000 with Varnamo for the youngster. According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, the 20-year-old is due to arrive in Scotland in the coming days to undergo a medical and complete the paperwork that will see him agree a permanent move to Pittodrie. Bilalovic has represented Sweden at both the under-18 level, where he debuted in a 1-0 win against Wales back in 2023, before progressing to the under-19 squad more recently after breaking into the Varnamo first-team, playing in 17 league games and scoring one goal. He also spent time on loan at Skövde AIK in the Swedish second-tier in 2024, playing eight times. Michel Ange-Balikwisha remains a target for Celtic. | Belga/AFP via Getty Images Celtic winger update Long-term Celtic target Michel Ange-Balikwisha has 'made it clear' he will not be extending his new deal with Royal Antwerp, which expires next summer, reigniting hope that the Scottish champions will be able to bring him to Glasgow before the transfer window slams shut on September 1. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, Belgian outlet HLN claim that while Brendan Rodgers' side have shown the strongest interest in the Belgian winger, they have yet to make an offer that is deemed acceptable. It is reported that Antwerp want to get back as much of the £4.7million transfer fee they shelled out on Ange-Balikwisha when he arrived from Standard Liege back in 2021. However, with the player's contract expiring next summer, the Belgian Pro League side is running the risk of losing him on a free transfer. Elsewhere, ex-Celtic title winner Dedryck Boyata has announced his retirement after a 16-year professional career. The former Belgian international won four Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups during his four-season stay at the Hoops. Gio Reyna has been encouraged join Rangers this summer. | Getty Images 32-cap star given Rangers encouragement Borussia Dortmund star Gio Reyna has been encouraged to follow in his father Claudio's footsteps by making a sensational move to Rangers this summer. The 32-cap American exploded onto the scene under former head coach Edin Terzić during the 2022/23 campaign, but has found game time hard to come by at the Signal Iduna in the last two campaigns, and looks to have dropped down the pecking order at the Bundesliga giants. However, former USA international Freddy Adu believes that a summer switch to Ibrox could reignite the attacking midfielder's career, saying: 'You don't get better by sitting on the bench. I mean, you can train all you want, but your game gets to that next level by getting a lot of game time. That just goes for everybody. So if he gets a chance to go to a team like Rangers, I think it'll benefit him tremendously. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
