Premiership boss considered leaving before takeover

Those problems were swept away when American Ford took majority control in May, just before Martindale led his team to promotion back to the William Hill Premiership with a play-off win over Ross County.
Ford spoke on Monday about his plans to make Livi a 'disruptive' force in Scottish football and has put his faith in Martindale to lead the football side.
'I'll be honest, when we were sitting on Zoom calls in February, March, whenever it was, my head was 'I need to try and take the club back to the Premiership and maybe look elsewhere for my career',' the Lions manager said.
'And Calvin just came in and kind of rejuvenated me. Also, it rejuvenated the staff, it just gave everyone in the football club a massive lift because the previous years were difficult.
'Taking the club back to the Premiership with the old regime, it wouldn't have been ideal. It would have just been pushing water up a hill again.
'And then Calvin's come in, there's just been a real fresh impetus, everybody, staff, upstairs, downstairs and I think that comes from his enthusiasm, his passion, his desire.
'Before we got back to the Premiership, his words to me, I remember sitting in the hotel room in Ross County and a text message came through and goes, 'look Davie, don't think you have to take the club back to the Premiership.
Read more:
'It would be great, but I'm here through the good and the bad times and I'll be here if you're in the Championship'.
'And maybe that helped me make better decisions in the dugout, so it's just been a breath of fresh air to be honest.'
Martindale added: 'Once we knew that Calvin was fully on board and it was going to get done, I think I had a better night's sleep than I had for the last two or three years to be honest.
'You've now got an upstairs looking after the upstairs.
'Being able to come into work and be the first-team manager of Livingston Football Club, this is the first time proper I've had that opportunity as a football manager.
'So I'm now fully focused on the football side, where historically I wasn't. Historically I couldn't be, it was just impossible.
'I never wanted a lot of the stuff that fell on my desk, but I got it through default because I was the only one that was here at the football club at that point.'
Ford stated that Martindale reminded him of himself with his passion and care for the club.
Martindale said: 'I think he sees the resilience. We're robust, we'll fight, we'll kick, we'll scream and we'll claw our way back to the Premiership and that's kind of what we've done.
'Hopefully that's what he's meaning in terms of the personality traits, in terms of the will to win – never give up.'

Liverpool transfer news: Major Alexander Isak update as deal close to being finalised

Liverpool have been told whether Alexander Isak will start the 2025-26 season playing for Newcastle while the Reds are poised to sell Ben Doak to Bournemouth in a £25million transfer deal Liverpool's Premier League campaign is up and running - but that doesn't mean an end to their transfer business. With the window open until Monday, September 1, there's still plenty of time for the Reds to fine-tune their squad for the 2025-26 season. ‌ Arne Slot's side raised the curtain on their title defence against Bournemouth on Friday. The match was preceded by a poignant tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash in July. ‌ His loss has implications on and off the pitch for Liverpool. The Reds have sold two other forwards in Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, leaving them short in the attacking department, according to Slot. ‌ After confirming the signing of centre-back Giovanni Leoni for £26m, Liverpool have now splurged £321million this summer and that figure would likely increase beyond the £450m mark if they sign top target Alexander Isak for a British-record fee. Sales, therefore, are just as important in the final fortnight of the window. Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Anfield. Howe confirms Isak decision Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that Alexander Isak will NOT play against Aston Villa on Saturday - but insists that there is a way back for the Liverpool target. Isak, 25, is continuing to train alone as he pushes for a move to Anfield. Howe, though, hopes that the situation will change and hasn't ruled out a return. "I want him to play. I want him to train," the Newcastle manager told reports on Friday morning. "I've had those conversations [with Isak] but the details of those will remain private. "There is no change to the situation. All my focus has been on the training, Aston Villa and the transfer front in terms of getting players in - that is all-consuming for me. Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while and that will continue to be the case." ‌ Bournemouth closing in on £25m Doak Bournemouth are close to reaching a full agreement with Liverpool to sign Ben Doak for £25million. The Scottish winger has been the subject of interest from various Premier League clubs but Bournemouth are set to win the race. Multiple reports say that a £25m deal is in the offing, with 19-year-old Doak having been pulled out of Liverpool's squad to face the Cherries on Friday. The former Celtic prospect spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough and made 24 appearances before needing surgery on his thigh. ‌ Slot wants attacking signing Arne Slot insists that Liverpool need to sign 'at least' one more attacker before transfer deadline day. That's despite the £79million signing of Hugo Ekitike this summer but his comments explain their pursuit of Isak. Slot told Sky Sports before the Bournemouth game: "I see Hugo mainly as a No.9 that could also play from the left or together with another No.9. We need to have one more attacker at least."

Dane Murray celebrates contract with goal as Celtic ease past Falkirk

The 22-year-old defender headed home Celtic's third goal of the second-round clash at Parkhead. Murray, who has already overcome two separate cruciate ligament injuries in his career, earlier signed a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028. Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were also on target and Falkirk defender Liam Henderson put through his own net before Keelan Adams scored an impressive consolation goal for the Premiership newcomers. Centre-back Murray was one of six players coming into the Celtic line-up alongside goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny. The Hoops beat then Championship side Falkirk 5-2 on their way to winning last season's tournament and this was another open encounter with both sides creating chances in the first half. Kenny volleyed wide early on after James Forrest's lay-off and former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain saved long-range strikes from Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney before scrambling to meet Henderson's wayward passback, which just went wide. Ross MacIver dragged a shot wide at the other end after a loose pass from Murray. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after McGregor returned the ball into the box following a corner. Tierney ran on to meet the cross and nodded the ball down for Maeda to score with a diving header. There were further chances at each end before the break. Sinisalo saved brilliantly from Calvin Miller's 25-yard strike before denying Alfredo Agyeman and MacIver. Engels and Forrest missed close-range headers at the other end. Celtic were more dominant after the break and doubled their lead in the 54th minute after Falkirk lost possession from a throw-in. Johnston chased down Miller as the former Celtic player headed back towards his own goal and the right-back won the ball before curling into the far corner with his left foot. Murray got his big moment in the 61st minute when he headed home from an inswinging corner from Engels. Celtic went further ahead three minutes later as Yang Hyun-jun made an instant impact after coming on with home debutant Shin Yamada. The South Korean winger ran past two opponents after Celtic won the ball back deep in the Bairns half, and his low ball across the goalmouth was turned into his own net by Henderson. The noisy visiting fans got a chance to celebrate three minutes later when right-back Adams arrowed a shot into the top corner from 20 yards. That ended the flurry of goals as Celtic safely navigated their way into Saturday evening's quarter-final draw and avoided any injuries ahead of their Champions League play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty on Wednesday.
