Sabah backs stronger Tvet push to boost youth employability

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the formation of the Sabah Tvet Council in May marked a major shift in the state's approach to developing a skilled workforce. In a speech read by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam when officiating the Sabah Tvet Symposium here on Wednesday, he stressed that Tvet should be embraced as a mainstream education pathway and not merely a secondary option. Hajiji said Sabah's diverse economic sectors - ranging from oil and gas to tourism and agriculture - require a skilled workforce to sustain growth and competitiveness. He called on youths to seize Tvet opportunities, which now offer courses aligned with industry needs and advancements in automation, AI, and digital technologies. The Chief Minister noted that Sabah's unemployment rate fell from 8.2 per cent in 2021 to 7.5 per cent in 2023, reflecting the positive impact of ongoing state initiatives. TONGOD (Aug 19): The unchecked rise of social media poses a new form of colonialism that could spark controversy and weaken national unity if not addressed seriously, said Kuamut assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah. Expressing concern over the spread of fake news and short videos on platforms such as TikTok, Reels, WhatsApp groups and YouTube, Masiung said such unfiltered content was increasingly being weaponised to attack the government and institutions. 'The growing polemic on social media to discredit the government and certain institutions can weaken the governance of a nation that is already independent,' he warned. Masiung was speaking to the media after flagging off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Convoy at Tongod Open Square last Sunday. He said slander and incitement spread through unregulated social media posts had become sharp tools for certain groups to create division. The Housing and Urban Development Board (LPPB) chairman also stressed the importance of appreciating the true meaning of independence across all layers of society. 'The younger generation must understand that the independence we enjoy today is the result of our leaders' struggles. 'In Malaysia, we were freed from colonial rule without bloodshed, unlike other countries where people had to take up arms to gain independence. 'The cry of Merdeka alone is meaningless if we fail to embrace the dimensions of national development and socio-economic progress that ensure stability in a multiracial society,' he said. Masiung cautioned that many youths today view independence merely as being free from colonial rule, shouting slogans, and waving the Jalur Gemilang. 'True independence of the soul and mind must be nurtured through character building shaped by four key aspects: religion, education, morals, and culture,' he added. Among the 1,000 Tongod residents who joined the convoy were Sabah Information Department director Jainisah Mohd Noor and Tongod district officer Mohd Yuseri Yusof.

Trident Acquires 30 Pct Stake In Tongxin's Web 3.0 E-commerce Platform On Telegram
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Trident Digital Tech Holdings Ltd (Trident), a Singapore-based digital transformation company, has signed a sales and purchase agreement to acquire a 30 per cent equity stake in Tongxin Innovation Ltd (Tongxin). The transaction, valued at about US$3 million, will be executed through the issuance of Trident's American Depositary Shares (ADSs) in the form of Class B ordinary shares to Tongxin's shareholders. (US$1=RM4.21) The deal values Tongxin, which operates the ToMe Web 3.0 e-commerce platform on Telegram, at approximately US$10 million. In a statement, Trident said the strategic investment expands its Web 3.0 ecosystem and underscores its commitment to blockchain-enabled e-commerce solutions. Trident Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Soon Huat Lim said the acquisition aligns with the company's mission to become a global leader in Web 3.0 enablement. He said the integration of ToMe's Web 3.0 commerce capabilities with Tridentity will enhance user experience and accelerate blockchain adoption in mainstream commerce. Tongxin's ToMe platform is built on Telegram, which has more than one billion users, and is designed to address e-commerce challenges through its '4F' value proposition, which is Fair, Fast, Friendly and Free. The company has partnered with decentralised blockchain projects on Ton, which has a combined user base of over 10 million, with active communities in Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong. Tongxin has also reached preliminary agreements with real-world asset companies operating artificial intelligence-powered shopping malls in Southeast Asia. Its leadership team comprises former executives from eBay, PayPal, Tencent and which it said positions the company to develop a global online and offline micro-business ecosystem.

New homes for 23 Penang families after 10-year wait

(Bernama pic) NIBONG TEBAL : Twenty-three families at Ladang Sungai Kechil who had been facing eviction have received good news: the state government will provide them with homes under the Rumah MutiaraKu (RMKu) development project. Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said each family would be given a free replacement house, while three temples would be rebuilt on the original sites. He said the land acquisition process for 2.49ha was completed last year under Sections 4 and 8 of the Land Acquisition Act 1960, following an agreement with the landowner as a long-term solution for the residents. Each family will receive a single-storey terraced house measuring 750 sq ft with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and parking space in front. 'A company has been selected to develop this project. It must first submit a planning permission plan. If approved soon, we expect construction to begin early next year,' he said. Earlier, Chow witnessed the signing ceremony of the joint development agreement for the RMKu housing development project between Penang State Housing Board chief business officer Fakhurrazi Ibnu Omar and Sierra Residences (M) Sdn Bhd director Khoek Su Kiang. At the ceremony, there was also a handover of offer letters to the buyers of RMKu's Residensi Rambai Indah and Harbour View Residence projects. Chow said the project involved the construction of 85 houses to be implemented in phases. However, the priority will be to first complete 23 units to be handed over to the residents, while the remaining 62 houses will be offered for sale to interested parties. He said the residents need not relocate during construction because there is sufficient land available as a 'buffer', and they can move into their new homes once they are completed. One of the residents, V Thangaraja, expressed joy that the land dispute had finally been resolved after 10 years. 'Before this, we didn't know where to go as our predecessors had lived in the settlement for over 100 years since the time of our grandparents,' said Thangaraja, adding that they were estate workers.
