Moment migrants detained on Spanish beach after being tackled by tourists

Daily Mirror2 days ago
On Sunday, swimming trunk-clad sunseekers were seen pinning down migrants who had arrived on the busy Sotillo Beach in Granada just moments earlier as families paddled in the shadows
Tourists tackled a group of migrants after they landed on a popular Spanish beach last weekend.

In footage of Sunday's incident, a speed boat carrying around 13 young men - thought to be from Morocco - could be seen arriving on Sotillo Beach in Granada's Castell de Ferro at around 2pm.

As stunned holidaymakers paddled in the shallows, the passengers are seen diving into the water, swimming to the beach, before trying to get away on foot. It comes after news a nursery teacher drowned her partner's four-year-old daughter in sickening attack.

Alberto Garcia, a restaurateur from the area, told local newspaper Ideal: "We all stood there staring, not quite knowing what was happening.
"We thought it was a recreational boat, but when we saw that they started throwing objects into the water and people starting to get out, we realised it wasn't normal.

"What surprised us most was that the boat was moving very slowly, as if they weren't in a hurry or afraid.
"They went in where there were most people, as if nothing had happened, and stopped five metres from the shore.

"Then they jumped off one by one, and the four remaining on board, some of them hooded, calmly turned around and left."
While some of the group tried to make a run for it once they reached the beach, others are said to have tried to blend in with the crowd.

But some of the sunseekers are said to have involved themselves by detaining some of the migrants until Spain's Civil Guard could arrive. In another clip, an individual appears to be reaching to grab the ankles of a migrant who is running.
Footage shows a man wearing nothing but his swimming trunks as he pins one of the men on the ground.

The Polica Local de Castell de Ferro added: "The lifeguards alerted us, and we managed to catch one on the street. Then we helped identify two more.
"The Civil Guard did the bulk of the work and managed to arrest nine."
Earlier today, responding to the UK's migrant difficulties, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said small boat arrivals will be detained to be returned to France "in a matter of days".

Ms Cooper said people who cross the Channel will be taken into custody "immediately on arrival". A new one-in-one-out deal - the first agreement to return migrants to France since Brexit - will come into force on Wednesday.
Ms Cooper told Sky News: "The first step will be to be detaining people because people will be detained until they are removed to France. And we expect those detentions to start in a matter of days." It comes after The Mirror's Kevin Maguire wrote: 'Labour must find engaging story for the UK - or face election wipeout'.
Describing the deal - which is starting as a year-long pilot scheme - she said: "It will start with the numbers being lower and then we'll build up. But I think this is really important - the groundbreaking principle here is that people can be returned to France if they arrive on these dangerous and illegal small boats.
"In return, we will take people who have applied legally through a legal process and been through security checks. But we should be returning people who have made these illegal crossings."
The Home Secretary refused to be drawn on the numbers who would be involved in the exchange deal. It has been reported that around 50 people will be sent back to France each week - but the Government has refused to confirm this.

First small boat migrants detained for return to France under new deal

First small boat migrants detained for return to France under new deal The Government has warned people considering travelling to the UK this way to think again, as they risk being returned and losing the money they pay traffickers The first small boat arrivals have been detained, the Home Office has confirmed (Image: PA) The initial small boat arrivals have been detained for deportation to France under a "groundbreaking" new returns agreement. Detentions started for migrants who reached Kent on Wednesday with those being held anticipated to be sent back within a fortnight. This follows the implementation of a new 'one in one out' agreement with France designed to address perilous crossings. ‌ The Government has cautioned individuals contemplating this route to the UK to reconsider, as they face the prospect of being returned whilst forfeiting money paid to traffickers. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described the initial wave of detentions as an "important step forward". ‌ This development follows Keir Starmer's praise of a significant UK-France deal to address Channel small boat crossings. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . ‌ Ms Cooper stated: "Yesterday, under the terms of this groundbreaking new treaty, the first group of people to cross the Channel were detained after their arrival at Western Jet Foil and will now be held in detention until they can be returned to France. "That sends a message to every migrant currently thinking of paying organised crime gangs to go to the UK that they will be risking their lives and throwing away their money if they get into a small boat.", reports the Mirror. "No one should be making this illegal and dangerous journey that undermines our border security and lines the pockets of the criminal gangs." ‌ The Government maintains that the returns agreement - the first with mainland Europe since Brexit - represents a breakthrough in its efforts to tackle smuggling gangs. The fresh initiative will operate until June of next year initially, with sources indicating that as many as 50 individuals weekly could be sent back - approximately 2,600 annually. In return, those with valid claims to reside in the UK will be permitted to travel from France. Ms Cooper added: "Criminal gangs have spent seven years embedding themselves along our border and it will take time to unravel them, but these detentions are an important step towards undermining their business model and unravelling the false promises they make. ‌ "These are the early days for this pilot scheme, and it will develop over time. But we are on track to do what no other government has done since this crisis first started - sending small boat arrivals back to France and strengthening our borders through the Plan for Change." The Home Office declared in a statement: "Border Force, Immigration Enforcement and Home Office officials will continue to work round the clock over the coming weeks to identify and detain individuals under the treaty, and undertake the necessary processes to prepare them for their return to France." According to the arrangement, which was established during a UK-France summit in July, individuals permitted entry to the UK will undergo prior screening to determine whether they might present a security risk. ‌ However, these measures have been criticised by human rights organisations, which are urging the Government to create more safe and legal pathways. Steve Valdez-Symonds, Amnesty International UK's refugee and migrant rights director, remarked: "A returns deal with France that makes access to safety in the UK - even for those with close family or connections here - dependent on someone else risking their life to cross the Channel only cements the role of smugglers in how people fleeing war and persecution must seek asylum in the UK. "Once again, refugees are treated like parcels, not people, while the public is left to pay the price for, yet another cruel, costly failure dressed up as policy." ‌ Louise Calvey, executive director at Asylum Matters, condemned the move as "yet another attack on the human right to seek sanctuary". She commented: "It's a grubby trade in human lives that will do nothing more than remove people from this country back into the hands of people smugglers. "It will send them back to French shores where they'll face escalating police violence: boats being slashed with families onboard, children being teargassed, violence which we know makes Channel crossings even more dangerous." The Home Office also disclosed on Monday a £100 million enhancement to border security, which includes funding for up to 300 additional National Crime Agency Officers. This investment will also support a trial of the 'one-in, one-out' returns agreement with France. Article continues below

BREAKING: Ex-Arsenal star Thomas Partey joins new club despite court case into rape charges

Villarreal have released a statement confirming the signing of Thomas Partey after he was released by Arsenal. Partey, 32, was in court on Tuesday, charged with eight counts of rape and one count of sexual assault - all of which he allegedly committed during his time at Arsenal. The Ghanaian has previously denied all charges against him. Partey was bailed on the conditions that he must not contact any of the complainants and that he must inform police of any changes of address or international travel, and of any address he stays at for 14 days or more. Following his appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court, the midfielder has joined Spanish club Villarreal on a two-year contract until 2027. Partey returns to Spain after five years in north London and will join his new team-mates immediately. There has been a backlash to his transfer, with the La Liga club releasing a statement:"The club is aware that the player is involved in legal proceedings in England. The player staunchly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him. "The club respects his presumption of innocence as a fundamental principle and awaits the ruling of the court, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts against him. Given British law regarding ongoing proceedings, the club will not comment further on this matter. "Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its firm commitment to respect and diversity and condemns any act of violence in all its forms, whether gender-based, discriminatory, racist, xenophobic, or conduct that violates human dignity." The 32-year-old was charged by police four days after his contract with Arsenal had expired. Partey made 167 appearances for the Premier League club, who paid Atletico Madrid for £45million to purchase him in September 2020. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said last month that he was '100 per cent sure' that they had followed the correct protocols after the allegations were made against Partey. The Ghana international arrived at court at around 9.15am on Tuesday dressed in an all-black ensemble for his 10am hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. Prosecuting, Jocelyn Ledward KC, laid out the case, as Partey listened from the dock. She explained how there are three complainants. Partey is alleged to have raped two of them and sexually assaulted the other. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022. Ms Ledward told the court that Partey had been charged with anal rape of the first complainant. The second charge, which is related to the same complainant, relates to 'at least four' allegations of anal rape. The court heard that charge three relates to the second complainant, who he alleged raped in 2021. Charge four, relating to the same complainant, is anal rape which he allegedly committed in 2022. Charge five is one of rape, also related to the second complainant. The sixth charge against Partey is for alleged sexual assault of a third complainant at his address. The court heard that he allegedly tried to kiss the complainant and touch her over her clothing. She pushed him off and 'after a couple of minutes' he stopped. All six charges were sent to be heard at the Old Bailey, where Partey is due appear on Tuesday, September 2. No restrictions were placed on his free transfer to Villarreal. Partey began his professional career with Atletico, making his professional debut in 2013 while on loan at Mallorca. He joined Almeria on loan the following season before becoming a first-team regular back in Madrid. With 53 caps to his name, Partey has played for Ghana at four international tournaments. He's been part of three Africa Cup of Nations campaigns (2017, 2019, and 2021) and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Partey has won one major trophy, the 2018 Europa League with Atletico. He won the 2023 Community Shield at Arsenal.
