MercadoLibre Faces Margin Strain: Should You Hold or Fold the Stock?

Globe and Mail13 hours ago
MercadoLibre MELI operates e-commerce and fintech platforms across Latin America through its Mercado Libre Marketplace and Mercado Pago services. While the company maintains significant market presence in the region, recent financial performance reveals mounting pressure on profitability that demands careful investor scrutiny.
The second quarter of 2025 earnings report reveals concerning trends for MercadoLibre, with operating margin contracting 210 basis points year over year to 12.2%. Despite having achieved net revenues of $6.79 billion, representing a 34% year-over-year increase, the company's adjusted EPS of $10.31 missed Zacks Consensus estimates by 14.15%, marking a margin stumble that stems primarily from aggressive investment in free shipping initiatives and heightened marketing expenditures that prioritize market share over near-term profitability.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is pegged at $44.63 per share, which has plunged $3.12 over the past 30 days.
Rapid Expansion Strategy Weighs on Profitability
Meli's strategic decisions have increasingly favored rapid expansion over earnings sustainability, raising questions about capital allocation efficiency. Operating expenses were approximately $2.3 billion, which increased 38.4% year over year, with the figure expanding 110 bps year over year to 33.4% of revenues. The aggressive expansion approach has been particularly evident in Brazil, where MercadoLibre has lowered free shipping thresholds and expanded first-party sales to capture market share. The company has prioritized geographic and operational expansion through costly logistics investments and promotional campaigns, mirroring rapid-growth strategies that have historically pressured near-term profitability for uncertain long-term market dominance.
Competition Has Intensified From Established Players
MercadoLibre has faced mounting competitive pressure across its business segments, which has thus pressurized margins significantly. In fintech, digital banking giant Nubank NU has emerged as a formidable challenger, leveraging AI-driven credit models and low-cost digital banking services to capture market share in payments and lending. In e-commerce, Amazon AMZN has expanded its Brazilian and Mexican operations with enhanced logistics and seller advertising tools, while SEA Limited 's SE Shopee platform has gained traction through mobile-first strategies and competitive advertising rates. This multi-front competitive pressure has forced MELI to maintain elevated marketing spend and defensive pricing strategies across all business lines, creating sustained margin compression.
MELI's Price Performance and Valuation
MELI shares have declined 10% over the past three months, underperforming the Zacks Retail-Wholesale sector and the Zacks Internet-Commerce industry's growth of 4.9% and 6.2%, respectively. Meli's peers Amazon and Sea Limited have increased 9.4% and 6.1% respectively, while NuBank has declined 5.8% in the same period.
Meli's decline over the past three months reflects investor concerns over escalating regional headwinds and potential trade policy changes. Rising political uncertainty across Latin America, persistent currency volatility, particularly in Argentina, and fears of increased tariffs under shifting U.S. trade policies have weighed heavily on sentiment. Additionally, macroeconomic instability in key markets like Brazil and Mexico has raised questions about sustainable growth prospects, prompting investors to de-risk their exposure to Latin American e-commerce despite the company's market leadership position.
MELI Underperforms Sector in 3 Months
Meli currently trades at a significant premium compared to the broader Zacks Internet-Commerce industry and its direct competitors. The company's forward 12-month Price/Earnings ratio stands at 39.84X, substantially higher than the industry average of 24.67X. When benchmarked against key peers, MELI's valuation appears stretched, with Amazon trading at 31.05X, Sea Limited at 34.38X, and Nubank at a more conservative 17.79X.
The Value Score of D further reinforces an unattractive valuation for the stock at the moment.
MELI's P/E F12M Ratio Depicts Premium Valuation
Time to Step Back Before Further Deterioration
For investors, MercadoLibre's current trajectory should serve as a clear warning signal. The company's premium valuation cannot justify the ongoing margin compression amid escalating competitive pressures across all business segments. With persistent regional headwinds, currency volatility and excessive spending on rapid expansion and promotional campaigns showing no signs of abating, the fundamental investment case has deteriorated considerably.
As market reality sets in regarding MELI's vulnerability to both macroeconomic instability and operational challenges, investors would be wise to reassess positions before further disappointments trigger a valuation reset. Investors should consider exiting positions while the Latin American e-commerce growth narrative still provides some support to the stock price rather than waiting for additional evidence of the growing disconnect between MELI's market dominance aspirations and its operational reality. Given these trends, MercadoLibre's Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) appears well-justified.

Iqstel Margin Jumps 7%

Key Points Gross margin rose by 7.65 percentage points year over year for the six months ended June 30, 2025, supporting improved profitability. Shareholder equity was $14.29 million, reflecting a stronger balance sheet. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Iqstel (NASDAQ:IQST), a diversified global telecommunications and technology services provider, reported earnings on Aug. 14, 2025. Shareholder equity stood at $14.29 million. The quarter saw the company surpass analyst forecasts, with GAAP revenue of $155.15 million exceeding the analyst estimate of $70.34 million and continuing to strengthen its financial standing, supported by organic growth in its core telecom business. Company Overview and Strategic Focus Iqstel is a provider of international voice, SMS, and fiber-optic connectivity services to businesses and telecom carriers. Its operations span 21 countries and are organized mainly around its telecommunication division, with efforts to diversify into other technology sectors. The company's business has focused on growth in its core telecommunications services while developing new offerings in artificial intelligence (AI), fintech solutions (financial technology products like payment and remittance platforms), and electric vehicles. The telecom segment, which provides services such as VoIP (voice over internet protocol), continues to generate the bulk of revenue, while product innovation and strategic acquisitions remain key to Iqstel's expansion plans. Success in these newer areas depends on realizing growth in high-potential technology markets and integrating new acquisitions effectively. Second Quarter Developments and Performance The main story was continued organic growth in the core telecom segment. All reported revenue increases were organic, with no impact from acquisitions or one-off gains for the six months ended June 30, 2025. The company noted its current revenue mix is 80% telecom and 20% fintech. Subsidiaries such as Etelix, SwissLink Carrier, and Whisl Telecom drive this business, focusing on wholesale voice traffic. However, a detailed breakdown between voice and messaging was not provided for the quarter. Financially, the telecom division delivered net income of $321,321, a 29.9% increase from $247,288 in Q1 2025. Adjusted EBITDA (non-GAAP) across operating businesses reached $1.1 million for the first six months of 2025, with management pointing to expected acceleration in the back half of the year. Gross margin improved by 7.65 percentage points year over year for the six months ended June 30, 2025. The company's fintech and emerging technology segments, which include financial services for cross-border money movement and new AI platforms, remain a small part of the revenue base, collectively making up about 20% of revenue for the first half of 2025. Key developments included preliminary launches of AI product families, such as (for digital customer support) and new partnerships for AI-driven cybersecurity. Strategic acquisitions are a stated priority, with management continuing to pursue new deals, especially in cybersecurity, but no new transactions closed during the period. Capital structure developments were also notable. Shareholder equity reached $14.29 million. Shareholder equity increased from $11.9 million at December 31, 2024, to $14.29 million at June 30, 2025. This improvement came even as the company issued new shares totaling approximately $3.6 million in conversion value during May–June 2025; the market absorbed these without material share price declines, according to management. Assets per share stood at $17.41, while shareholder equity per share reached $4.08 at June 30, 2025, up from $3.37 per share at June 30, 2024. There was no update on workforce expansion, with headcount stable at 100 employees across all divisions. Outlook and What to Watch For the second half of fiscal 2025, management projects revenue of $210 million for the second half, supported by strong preliminary July revenue results of $35 million. If achieved, this would set the company on a $400 million annualized revenue run rate by year-end, with a $340 million revenue target for FY2025. The company continues to target a $15 million annualized Adjusted EBITDA (non-GAAP) run rate, which would require significant growth from the current $1.1 million adjusted EBITDA figure for the first half. No explicit forward guidance on per-share earnings was provided in the release. Leadership did not announce any dividend. Investors and analysts will be monitoring the pace of telecom segment growth, concrete progress in newer technology product families, and any material mergers or acquisitions that could alter the revenue mix. Capital management remains an area to watch, particularly in light of ongoing share issuances tied to the company's growth initiatives. Revenue and net income presented using U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) unless otherwise noted. 'Financially, we generated $0.87 million in net revenue this quarter, which we view as a strong baseline for future growth. Over the past several quarters, we've devoted significant time and effort to recapitalize the business and retool our technology infrastructure. With both initiatives far along, we now have improved liquidity to strategically invest in our business, which we expect to lead to accelerating topline growth and improved KPI performance through the second half of the year.' Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Gross Merchandise Value (GMV): $3.77 million Average Order Value (AOV): $50.00 (1H 2025) U.S. Conversion Rate: .41% of all traffic Creator Lifetime Value (LTV): $200.00 Total Active Creators with Stores: Over 12 million Total Number of Active Visitors: Over 200 million Second Quarter 2025 Financial Results Results compare the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 ('Q2 2025') to the second quarter ended June 30, 2024 ('Q2 2024') unless otherwise indicated. Results from Q2 2024 represent only Fresh Vine Wine, Inc. results. Total revenue increased 1,134% to $0.87 million in Q2 2025 from $0.07 million in the same year-ago period. The increase in net contribution revenue was mostly attributable to the addition of sales from Amaze as the Company closed the acquisition during the first quarter of 2025. Gross profit increased 1,903% to $0.79 million in Q2 2025 from $(0.04) million in the same year-ago period. The increase in gross profit is primarily due to the operating leverage of the Amaze platform, which enables high-margin digital and physical sales with lower incremental cost compared to traditional wholesale models. Net loss was $5.0 million, or $(3.14) per share, in Q2 2025 compared to net loss of $0.88 million, or $(1.30) per share, in the same year-ago period. The increase in net loss is largely driven by a $4.0 million increase in SG&A expenses that are primarily related to operating costs associated with Amaze's creator-focused business model, including personnel, legal and professional services related to the reverse merger, and marketing costs to support platform growth. The Company had $0.31 million in cash at June 30, 2025, compared to $0.16 million at December 31, 2024. Outlook Amaze management expects to build on the base provided by its Q2 performance, both at the top and bottom line. The Company foresees net revenue continuing to ramp sequentially in Q3 as well as into Q4. As a result of these material topline increases, combined with additional organizational efficiencies, Amaze also expects to generate a temporary profit in Q4 2025/Q1 2026 due to an increase in sales related to the seasonality of the business. Amaze's Q3 2025, Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 financial outlook is based on a number of assumptions that are subject to change and many of which are outside our control. If actual results vary from these assumptions, our expectations may change. There can be no assurance that we will achieve these results.
