789 traffic police personnel mobilised for ASEAN Summit
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 789 personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) will be mobilised to ensure smooth traffic flow during the ASEAN Summit and related meetings in the federal capital from Friday until May 28.
Bukit Aman JSPT director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said they comprised 292 personnel from the Kuala Lumpur contingent, while the remaining 497 are from other contingents.
'The operation will involve 36 patrol vehicles, 313 high-powered motorcycles and 190 additional motorcycles, as well as tow trucks to clear obstructing vehicles from the roads.
'As road closures will take effect from May 23, the public is advised to stay updated through the media, plan their journeys, use alternative routes and opt for public transport,' he told reporters after delivering a briefing to JSPT personnel at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre today.
Mohd Yusri said a dry-run would be conducted on May 21 and 22, involving motorcade movements, route security, location control and other duties.
'These on-ground rehearsals will provide early notice to road users regarding the upcoming road closures,' he said.
He added that enforcement operations, including Op Samseng Jalanan, would continue around the city centre to ensure users adhere to traffic regulations.

2.5 Million Vehicles Expected To Enter Penang Ahead Of Aidiladha
GEORGE TOWN, June 5 (Bernama) -- Penang Police expect 2.5 million vehicles to enter the state ahead of the Aidiladha celebration this Saturday. State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the figure was based on projections by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) of vehicles passing through the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from May 26 to June 8. 'In addition, the increase is likely attributed to the current fruit season in Penang,' he said when contacted by Bernama. To prepare, the JSPT launched an operation dubbed 'Op Lancar' from May 31 to June 8 to ensure smooth traffic flow during this period, he added. Hamzah said sufficient personnel have been deployed to patrol and monitor areas prone to congestion and accidents. Meanwhile, he noted that the police have identified several traffic hotspots where control efforts will be focused, including the Penang Bridge, Jalan Masjid Negeri, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, and areas in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT). COMMENT | Let me state that this is not a satirical piece - I honestly think the lessons from the recent Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur can teach us much about the traffic problem in the city and even solve it. Bear with me. I can safely say that the traffic problem has been with us for over half a century. In 1970, I was living in Sentul and had to travel every weekday morning right across town to Pantai, where Universiti Malaya was located. It took me at least three hours both ways on a good day. I sometimes took shortcuts. If I got off at the Kuala Lumpur main railway station from the bus which I took at the university, and timed it at the appropriate hour - 12.30pm at lunch and 4.30pm in the evening, I could avoid road traffic and save 45 minutes for that 10-minute ride to Sentul and the five-minute walk to home.
