Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman goes on IL for first time in his career because of oblique strain
Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman was placed on the injured list Saturday for the first time in his career because of a strained left oblique.
The 27-year-old Rutschman had an MRI on Saturday morning, and the Orioles announced the move about 15 minutes before their game against the Yankees. 'He's been super durable, especially for a catcher,' Baltimore interim manager Tony Mansolino said. 'Unfortunately, if he does–if this is a thing–he's going to go, but hopefully it's not too long.'

Rutschman was in Baltimore's original lineup Friday as the designated hitter before feeling pain during batting practice and being scratched. The Orioles recalled Maverick Handley, who will serve as the backup to Gary Sánchez until Rutschman returns.
Rutschman is hitting .277 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season. The top overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft is hitting .309 (17 for 55) in his last 15 games after hitting .182 (16 for 88) in his previous 25.
Rutschman has been among the more durable catchers in the majors. After playing 113 games following his debut in May 2022, he appeared in 154 games in 2023 and 148 last season.
Handley is 3 for 40 in 15 games with the Orioles this season. In 17 games with Triple-A Norfolk, Handley is hitting .322 with one home run and five RBIs.

Soto and Nimmo Lead Power Surge as Mets Hit 7 Solo Shots and Beat Phillies to Snap 7-Game Skid
Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo each hit two home runs, and the New York Mets connected for seven solo shots to snap a seven-game losing streak with an 11–4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night. Francisco Lindor, Jared Young, and Francisco Alvarez also went deep for the Mets, who tied Philadelphia atop the NL East at 46–31. Lindor drove in three runs, and Soto finished with four hits and four RBIs. Alec Bohm had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies, who lost for just the second time in 10 games. Griffin Canning (7–3) pitched into the sixth inning, and relievers Huascar Brazobán, Ryne Stanek, and Chris Devenski combined to blank Philadelphia over the final three frames. The Mets went ahead in the third when Lindor led off with the first of three consecutive homers off Mick Abel (2–1). After the switch-hitter broke an 0-for-20 skid with a drive to center field, Nimmo clubbed a curveball into the seats in right before Soto made it 4–3 with the first of his two shots. New York last homered in three straight at-bats on Oct. 4, 2022. New York went up by two in the fifth when Soto hammered an 84-mph curveball from Joe Ross a projected 437 feet into the second deck in right. Canning rebounded from two straight poor outings in which he allowed 10 earned runs over 9 2/3 innings by giving up four runs and six hits in five-plus innings. Abel lasted just three innings, allowing four runs and six hits. Key moment: Nimmo's first homer, a one-out shot in the first, started the power barrage for the Mets following their recent struggles. New York had been swept in three-game series by Tampa Bay at home and at Atlanta before dropping Friday's series opener 10–2 to Philadelphia. Key stats: New York has won 28 consecutive games in which Lindor has homered, a streak that started last July 9. That's one shy of the major league record–the Brooklyn Dodgers won 29 games in a row when Carl Furillo went deep from 1951–53. The Mets have hit seven homers in a game five times–four of them at Citizens Bank Park.

Fernando Tatis Jr. hits 3-run homer to lead Padres past Royals
Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a three-run homer to end his long power drought, and Dylan Cease pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning as the San Diego Padres beat the Kansas City Royals 5–1 on Saturday. Luis Arraez gave San Diego a 2–1 lead with an RBI single in the third, and the Padres won for the third time in 10 games. The loss halted Kansas City's four-game winning streak. With the Padres ahead by one in the seventh, Jose Iglesias and Bryce Johnson hit consecutive singles. Tatis followed by smashing a 96 mph sinker from reliever Taylor Clarke into the left-field bleachers for his 14th homer this season and first since May 27. Cease (3–6) effectively mixed his four-seam fastball and slider to keep the Royals from mounting much offense. He gave up one run and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings. Adrian Morejon retired all five batters he faced to seal it for San Diego. Royals starter Noah Cameron (2–3) permitted two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Jake Cronenworth had an RBI groundout for the Padres in the second. John Rave tied it 1–1 with a run-scoring double in the third. Key moment: With a runner on second in the eighth and the Royals trying to mount a comeback, Iglesias made a spectacular play at third base to rob Vinnie Pasquantino of a hit. Key stat: Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts continued his torrid hitting with two more singles. He has hits in 10 of his last 13 at-bats spanning three-plus games. During that stretch, Bogaerts has a home run, two doubles, and seven singles. Up next: Royals RHP Seth Lugo (4–5, 3.05 ERA) starts the finale of the three-game series Sunday against RHP Randy Vasquez (3–4, 3.70).

Reds' Elly De La Cruz and Mariners Reliever Trent Thornton Fall Ill While Playing in Extreme Heat
Elly De La Cruz, the Cincinnati Reds shortstop, and Trent Thornton, the Seattle Mariners reliever, both experienced illness on Saturday while playing in the extreme heat that blanketed much of the US. De La Cruz vomited on the field with two outs in the fourth inning of Cincinnati's extra-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He was checked on by a trainer, and two workers from the grounds crew cleaned up the area. The 23-year-old De La Cruz, who is from the Dominican Republic, stayed in the game and hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Thornton pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Seattle before leaving the game in the eighth in a 10–7 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The 31-year-old right-hander had to be helped from the field. Mariners manager Dan Wilson said Thornton had 'a little bit of a heat-related illness.' 'It was a scary moment for sure,' Wilson said. 'He battled hard. But just really glad that he's feeling a little bit better now and should be OK.' The game-time temperature for Reds at Cardinals was 92 degrees, and it was 94 for the first pitch of the Mariners' loss to the Cubs. Milwaukee's game at Minnesota was played under an excessive heat warning. Seattle and Chicago finished their game with three umpires after Chad Whitson got sick. Dexter Kelley moved from second base to home plate. Whitson was treated in the Mariners dugout. 'He came in, same kind of thing. Just was not feeling well,' Wilson said. 'Threw up a few times in the dugout and then they came and took care of him from there. The heat was a real thing today for sure.' Whitson was dealing with some dehydration, but a Major League Baseball spokesman said he was doing better Saturday night and had been cleared to work third base for the series finale. A Wrigley Field staffer had a heat-related medical issue right after Saturday's game, according to a spokesman for the Cubs. He was tended to by medical personnel and walked off the field on his own. The Cubs set up cooling and misting stations throughout Wrigley to help fans with the heat on Saturday, along with additional emergency personnel. The team had similar plans in place for Sunday, along with bringing in a city bus to use as a cooling station on the street.
